  • In the civil works, the measurement of earth-volume is one of the important elements in the estimation of the reasonable construction cost. Related studies mainly used GPS (Global Positioning System) or total station to obtain information on civil work areas. However, these methods are difficult to implement in inaccessible areas. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to use the UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) to measure the earth-volume. The study area is located in a reservoir construction site in Sangju-si, Gyeongsangbuk-do, Republic of Korea. We compared the earth-volume amounts acquired by UAV-based surveying to ones acquired by total station-based and GPS-based surveying, respectively. In the site, the amount of earth-volume acquired by GPS was $147,286.79m^3$. The amount of earth-volume acquired by total station was $147,286.79m^3$, which is the 96.13% accuracy compared to the GPS-based surveying. The earth-volume obtained by UAV was $143,997.05m^3$ when measured without GCPs (Ground Control Points), $147,251.71m^3$ with 4 GCPs measurement, and $146,963.81m^3$ with 7 GCPs measurement. Compared to the GPS-based surveying, 97.77%, 99.98%, and 99.78% accuracies were obtained from the UAV-based surveying without GCP, 4 GCPs, and 7 GCPs, respectively. Therefore, it can be confirmed that the UAV-based surveying can be used for the earth-volume measurement.

  • Recently, a technique for acquiring spatial information data using UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) has been greatly developed. It is a very crucial issue of the GIS (Geographic Information System) mapping system that passes way point in the unmanned airframe and finally measures the accurate image and stable localization to the desired destination. Though positioning using DGPS (Differential Global Navigation System) or RTK-GPS (Real Time Kinematic-GPS) guarantee highly accurate, they are more expensive than the construction of a single positioning system using a single GPS. In the case of a low-priced single GPS system, the stability of the positioning data deteriorates. Therefore, it is necessary to supplement the uncertainty of the absolute position data of the UAV and to improve the accuracy of the current position data economically in the operating state of the UAV. The aim of this study was to present an algorithm enhancing the stability of position data in a single GPS mode of UAV with multiple GPS. First, the arrangement of multiple GPS receivers through the center of gravity of the UAV were examined. Next, MD (Mahalanobis Distance) is applied to detect instantaneous errors of GPS data in advance and eliminate outliers to increase the accuracy of previously collected multiple GPS data. Processing procedure for multiple GPS reception data by applying the center of the triangular method were presented to improve the position accuracy. Second, UAV navigation systems integrated multiple GPS through configuration of the UAV specifications were implemented. Using the unmanned airframe equipped with multiple GPS receivers, GPS data is measured with the TCM (Triangular Center Method). In addition, UAV equipped with multiple GPS were operated in study area and locational accuracy of multiple GPS of UAV with VRS (Virtual Reference Station) GNSS surveying were compared. The result showed that the error factors are compensated, and the error range are reduced, resulting in the reliability of the corrected value. In conclusion, the result in this paper is expected to realize high-precision position estimation at low cost in UAV using multiple low-cost GPS receivers.

  • In the era of the 4th industrial revolution, smart construction, in which new technologies such as UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) are fused, is attracting attention in the construction field. However, the method of estimating earthwork volume using DEM generated by UAV survey according to practical regulations such as construction design guidelines or standard product counting is not officially recognized and needs to be improved. In this study, different types of UAV were measured and DEM was obtained using this data. The DEM (Digital Elevation Model) thus obtained was analyzed for changes in the amount of earthworks according to the size of the GSD (Ground Sample Distance). In addition, the amount of earthwork by DEM and the amount of earthwork by existing design drawings were compared and analyzed. As a result of the study, it was suggested that images with a GSD of 5cm or less are effective to generate a high-quality DEM. Next, as a result of comparing the earthwork volume calculation method using DEM and the earthwork volume based on the existing 2D design drawings, a difference of about 1% was shown. In addition, when the design earthwork amount calculated by the double-section averaging method was compared with the designed earthwork amount using DEM data by UAV survey, a difference of about 1% was found. Therefore, it is suggested that the method of calculating the amount of earthworks using UAV is an efficient method that can replace the existing method.

  • In order to realize tiny bridge crack discovery by UAV-based machine vision, a novel method combining deep learning and tensor voting is proposed. Firstly, the grid images of crack are detected and descripted based on SE-ResNet50 to generate feature points. Then, the probability significance map of crack image is calculated by tensor voting with feature points, which can define the direction and region of crack. Further, the crack detection anchor box is formed by non-maximum suppression from the probability significance map, which can improve the robustness of tiny crack detection. Finally, a case study is carried out to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method in the Xiangjiang-River bridge inspection. Compared with the original tensor voting algorithm, the proposed method has higher accuracy in the situation of only 1-2 pixels width crack and the existence of edge blur, crack discontinuity, which is suitable for UAV-based bridge crack discovery.

  • The video streaming technologies are used in diverse areas including aerospace. UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) is still being developed so that we are able to use the UAV not only in military areas but also in civil areas. Remotely monitoring and observing a certain area is possible via using video streaming service based on the UAV nowadays. However, UAV is vulnerable to weather conditions, plane's weight, battery capacity and so on, which makes many restrictions of flight time and video streaming services. In order to prolong the video streaming services, we can use a number of UAVs, fly them one by one, and switch video streaming channels. In the paper, we propose the methods how to interchange UAVs' missions and their video streaming channels to provide seamless video stream services.

  • In this study, with arbitrary reference points on the water, photogrammetry accuracy analysis was conducted using unmanned aerial vehicle(UAV). A small reservoir is a research area, and twenty buoys were used as arbitrary reference points. Errors of location coordinate were identified with control of amounts of used reference points. cases are categorized by index scores per photos. Accuracy of X is 0.141m~0.166m and accuracy of Y is 0.136m~0.241m. Considering that allowable error for the maritime boundary survey is ${\pm}2m$, it is possible to get the accuracy data available for the photogrammetry of UAV using an reference point. In addition, the coefficient of correlation between the number of reference points per unit and number of buoys used as reference point and the ratio of the reference point per square measure, and percentage of buoys used as reference point and the coefficient of x and y were performed. Each element, x, and y showed a strong correlation and the coefficient of number of buoys used as reference point was irrelevant. The results of this correlation analysis can be analyzed that the number of reference points used in each picture is greater than the actual number of reference points used in location accuracy.

  • Pine wilt disease occurred for the first time in Busan in 1988 and the damage has since been increasing. In 2005, a special law was enacted for pine wilt disease by Korea Forest Service. Incidences relating to the forest pest had been frequent and chemical control as well as physical control techniques had been applied to control it. Therefore, there is a need to reduce the damage caused by the pine wilt disease through intensive management such as continuous monitoring, control, and monitoring based on active control as well as management measures. In this study, the UAV-based monitoring method was proposed as an economical way of monitoring the forest pest. The efficiency of the existing method and UAV method had been analyzed, and as a result the study suggested that UAV can be used for forest pest monitoring and indeed improve efficiency. The UAV-based forest pest monitoring method has a cost reduction of about 50% compared with the conventional method and will also help to reduce the area where the survey was omitted.

  • Recently an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) has been widely used for military and civil applications. The role of a navigation system in the UAV is to provide navigation data to the flight control computer (FCC) for guidance and control. Since performance of the FCC is highly reliant on the navigation data, a fault in the navigation system may lead to a disastrous failure of the whole UAV. Therefore, the navigation system should possess a fault detection and isolation (FDI) algorithm. This paper proposes an attitude determination GPS/INS integrated navigation system with an FDI algorithm for a UAV. Hardware for the proposed navigation system has been developed. The developed hardware comprises a commercial inertial measurement unit (IMU) and the integrated navigation package (INP) which includes an attitude determination GPS (ADGPS) receiver and a navigation computer unit (NCU). The navigation algorithm was implemented in a real-time operating system with a multi-tasking structure. To evaluate performance of the proposed navigation system, a flight test has been performed using a small aircraft. The test results show that the proposed navigation system can give accurate navigation results even in a high dynamic environment.
