  • An efficient three-dimensional (3D) inversion of magnetotelluric (MT) data can be carried out by using approximate sensitivities or avoiding the calculation of a full sensitivity matrix. In this paper, we propose approximate sensitivities for efficient 3D MT inversion based on the Gauss-Newton method and test and compare four kinds of sensitivities. Applying the four sensitivities to both synthetic and field data shows that the effects of sensitivities are highly dependent on data and thus applying various combinations of sensitivities is recommended for efficient inversion and good images.

  • In this study, the feasibility of introducing calcite-forming bacteria into concrete pavements to improve their mechanical performance was investigated. Lysinibacillus sphaericus WJ-8, which was isolated in a previous study and is capable of exhibiting high urease activity and calcite production, was used. When analyzed via scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction, WJ-8 showed a significant amount of calcite precipitation. The compressive strength of cement mortar mixed with WJ-8 cells and nutrient medium (urea with calcium lactate) increased by 10% compared with that of the controls. Energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy analyses confirmed that the increase in strength was due to the calcite formed by the WJ-8 cells.

  • Composting of water hyacinth, mixed with cattle manure, rice husk and sawdust in four different proportions, was performed in a pilot scale rotary drum composter. The physico-chemical characteristics, i.e., temperature, moisture content, pH, electrical conductivity, total organic matter (OM), nitrogen dynamics and nutrients were evaluated during the 20 days composting process. The stabilities of the composts were also investigated with respirometric analysis, i.e., $CO_2$ evolution rates and oxygen uptake rate (OUR). Among all trials, trial 1 (6 water hyacinth, 3 cattle manure, 1 rice husk) indicated the best composting mix, as shown by the highest temperature profile and OM loss, and lowest $CO_2$ evolution rate and OUR.

  • The purpose of this paper is to analyze the indoor temperature and humidity changes with the operation of a condense drying humidifier. This paper illustrates the principles and composition of a condense drying dehumidifier, which is broadly used in Korean households. Experiments were conducted repeatedly on rainy days in a test chamber. The results showed that the indoor RH was lowered to 40% within 2 hours while the indoor temperature was increased by approximately $4.3^{\circ}C$ with the operation of the humidifier.

  • Korea became the 5th country by opening the Kyungbu-Highspeed Railway in April of 2004, which has contributed to technical innovations and motivated to increase SOC investment for the Railroad facilities. This increase of Railroad facilities will need the many railroad civil engineers who are in charge of construction and maintenance. Moreover, we need more qualitative engineers to catch up with the speed of technical renovation and to play an important role in exporting our railroad technique to outside country such as China, and Russia. In this paper, a new alternative of training railroad civil engineers will be investigated in relation to NURI Project, which is sponsored by Ministy of Education.

  • In preliminary design phase, the wing geometry of the civil aircraft was determined using the empirical equation and historical data. To make wing geometry more aerodynamically efficient, an aerodynamic shape optimization was conducted. For this purpose the parametric modeling, high fidelity CFD analysis and metamodel-based optimal design technique were adopted. The parametric modeling got the design process to achieve the improvement by generating the configuration outputs easily for the major design variables. The optimal design equations were formularized as the type of the multi-objective functions considering low/high speed and lift/drag coefficient. The optimal solution was explored with the help of the kriging metamodel and the desirability function, therefore the optimal wing planform was sought to be excellent at both low and high speed region. Additionally the optimal wing planform was validated that it was excellent not only at the specific AOA, but also all over the range of AOA.

  • The streams in Jeju Island have very distinctive hydrological and geological properties and there are a lot of limits in applying the general flood estimation method. This study presented parameters dominant in the Hancheon stream of Jeju Island by analyzing the sensitivity of parameters of HEC-HMS model regarding rainfall events in the target basin, and extracted the optimal parameter(Time of Concentration of Clark Unit Hydrograph: Kraven II method, Storage Coefficient: Sabol method) by analyzing and comparing it with the flood runoff data observed in the site and Jeju Island's observation data.

  • In this study, the improved three-dimensional analysis model designed for a more accurate analysis of marine cable-supported structures, is presented. In this improved analysis model, the beam elements, of which the stability function is derived using Taylor's series expansions, are used to model space frame structures, and the truss elements. The equivalent elastic modulus of the truss elements is evaluated on the assumption that the deflection curve of a cable has a catenary function. By using the proposed three-dimensional analysis model, nonlinear static analysis is carried out for some cable-supported structures. The results are compared with previous studies and show good agreement with their findings.
