In order to effectively control waves in a coastal zone, Multi-Cylinder Piles have been suggested as economic structures. A numerical analysis was conducted using the Delft-3D: WAVE module based on SWAN, which considered wave shoaling and refraction. Moreover, irregular waves were used to investigate the hydrodynamic characteristics of the wave interaction with the structure. In this paper, a numerical analysis was carried out to research the effect of wave control through a wave height analysis concerning an existing, concrete wave breaker and multi-cylinder piles placed at the same location. As a result, the effect of the wave control is shown using the wave breaker, multi-cylinder piles, and existing data.
Characteristic of wastes in a unsanitary landfill at the residential development site in H city, Kyunggi-do was investigated for the disposal of huge amount of wastes. The total amount of wastes was estimated at 117,000 ton and construction solid wastes and municipal solid wastes were detected together. The portion of combustibles was very low and soils, concrete wastes, and pebbles were the major components in landfilled wastes. Because the site was the residential development site, the landfilled wastes should be removed immediately for the construction. Therefore the way that the unsanitary landfill was excavated and the wastes were sorted into three categories such as soils, noncombustibles and combustibles was selected as the best method. Soils and noncombustibles could be recycled and sorted combustibles could be re-landfilled in a smaller area or incinerated.
Spatial variations of physicochemical and microbiological variables were examined to understand spatial heterogeneity of those variables in intertidal flat. Variograms were constructed for understanding spatial autocorrelations of variables by a geostatistical analysis and spatial correlations between two variables were evaluated by applications of a Cross-Mantel test with a Monte Carlo procedure (with 999 permutations). Water content, organic matter content, pH, nitrate, sulfate, chloride, dissolved organic carbon (DOC), four extracellular enzyme activities (${\beta}-glucosidase$, N-acetyl-glucosaminidase, phosphatase, arylsulfatase), and bacterial diversity in soil were measured along a transect perpendicular to shore line. Most variables showed strong spatial autocorrelation or no spatial structure except for DOC. It was suggested that complex interactions between physicochemical and microbiological properties in sediment might controls DOC. Intertidal flat sediment appeared to be spatially heterogeneous. Bacterial diversity was found to be spatially correlated with enzyme activities. Chloride and sulfate were spatially correlated with microbial properties indicating that salinity in coastal environment would influence spatial distributions of decomposition capacities mediated by microorganisms. Overall, it was suggested that considerations on the spatial distributions of physicochemical and microbiological properties in intertidal flat sediment should be included when sampling scheme is designed for decomposition processes in intertidal flat sediment.
Remote sensing data is collected and analyzed to enhance understanding of the terrestrial surface. Since Landsat satellite was launched in 1972, many researches using multispectral data has been achieved. Recently, with the availability of airborne and satellite hyperspectral data, the study on hyperspectral data are being increased. It is known that as the number of spectral bands of high-spectral resolution data increases, the ability to detect more detailed cases should also increase, and the classification accuracy should increase as well. In this paper, we classified the hyperspectral and multispectral data and tested the classification accuracy. The MASTER(MODIS/ASTER Airborne Simulator, 50channels, 0.4~13$\mu$m) and Landsat TM(7channels) imagery including Yeong-Gwang area were used and we adjusted the classification items in several cases and tested their classification accuracy through statistical comparison. As a result of this study, it is shown that hyperspectral data offer more information than multispectral data.
Heavy metals in soils exist in various forms dependent upon surrounding conditions. As the Janghang smelter area is of concern for its high elevated heavy metal concentrations, Korean government decided to remediate the area. Main objectives of this research were; to analyze heavy metal concentrations and their existing forms in the vicinity of the smelter; and to understand differences made by analysis techniques of heavy metals. Top soils of rice field, crop field, bare field, and forestry in the area were sampled and analyzed for their physicochemical characteristics. Concentrations of Cu, Cd, Pb, and As were analyzed with two pretreatment techniques adopted using 0.1 N HCl and aqua regia. To analyze existing forms of heavy metals, Tessier's schemes for sequential extraction technique were adopted. Exchangeable fraction and carbonate bound fraction of heavy metals may pose potential threat to environment and were in the order of Pb > As > Cu > Cd. If assessing mobile fraction of heavy metals by land uses, the order was forestry > bare land > crop field > rice field. When analyzed using Tessier's scheme, high ratio of residual fractions to total arsenic concentration should be considered for remediation design of the area.
Batch tests were carried out to evaluate the thermal treatment of low volatile organic compounds in low-permeability soil. The chemical oxidation by sodium persulfate catalyzed by heat and Fe (II) was evaluated. Enhanced persulfate oxidation of n-decane (C-10), n-dodecane (C-12), n-tetradecane (C-14), n-hexadecane (C-16), and phenanthrene was observed with thermal catalyst, indicating increased sulfate radical production. Slight enhancement of the pollutants oxidation was observed when initial sodium persulfate concentration increased from 5 to 50 g/L. However, the removal efficiency greatly decreased as soil/water ratio increased. It indicates that mass transfer of the pollutants as well as the contact between the pollutants and sulfate radical were inhibited in the presence of solids. In addition, more pollutants can be adsorbed on soil particles and soil oxidant demand increased when soil/water ratio becomes higher. The oxidation of the pollutants was significantly improved when catalyzed by Fe(II). The sodium persulfate consumption increased at the same time because the residual Fe(II) acts as the sulfate radical scavenger.

The purpose of this study is to quantify the erosional parameters, such as the critical shear stress for erosion and the erosion rate coefficient for cohesive sediments from the Mokpo coast. Using Chonbuk annular flume, five erosion tests were conducted under the uniform bed condition but a different bed density respectively. Erosion test results for Mokpo sediments have shown increases in the range of $0.16{\sim}0.43\;N/m^2$ but decreases exponentially in the range of $272{\sim}4.64\;mg/cm^2{\cdot}hr$ for the given bed shear stress of $1.14{\sim}1.34\;g/cm^3$. The erosional parameters of Mokpo sediments are found to vary remarkably in quantity compared with those for cohesive sediments from other sites. On the whole, the value of Mokpo coast sediments appears to be similar to Kunsan sediments but smaller than Saemankeum and Okeechobee sediments. On the other hand, Mokpo sediments have been shown to be larger than Saemankeum and Okeechobee sediments but smaller than Kunsan sediments.
An algorithm to locate and estimate severity of damage in jacket-type offshore structures for which modal responses are availabit' for very few vibrational modes is presented. First, a theory of damage locaization and severity estimation(which yields information on the location and severity of damage directly from changes in mode shapes) is formulated. Next, the feasibility the damage detection algorithm is demonstrated by using a numerical example of an offshore jacket platform for which only three vibration modes are measured. Form the material presented here, two major results are observed. First, all damage locations in the offshore jacket platform are correctly predicted. Next, predicted damage is relatively correctly estimated.
PURPOSES : This paper evaluates, using LS/DYNA-3D software, the vehicle impact performance of flexible barriers made of steel W-Beam supported by four different types of post configurations. These types include circular post, H-shape post, C-shape post, and square post. METHODS : The post-soil interaction has been investigated according to different impact angles. For this purpose, energy absorption, maximum displacements of post and rail, and occupant risk index of THIV have been compared each other. The three dimensional soil material model, instead of the conventional spring model based on Winkler and p-y curve, has been used to increase the correctness of computational model. RESULTS : It is noted the crash energy absorption has been increased with respect to the increase of impact angle. CONCLUSIONS : In particular, a post with open section(H-shape, C-shape) shows the greater crash energy absorption capability as compared with a post with closed section under the same level of impact conditions.
It may be an important issue to estimate population of a concerned country. In this study, an appropriate variable was selected to establish a model which fits best the relationship between the night time imagery of DMSP-OLS and population data. Exponential model was selected which was proposed by previous study. Accuracy validation was also performed for each variable extracted from the night time imagery of DMSP-OLS. Consequently, the model showed high accuracy when applied to the area of a certain amount of light was existed. However, further consideration should be necessary when to applied other country or other part of regions.
