  • In this study, the model tests were conducted on the short piles installed in sands under a horizontal pullout load to investigate their behavior characteristics. From the horizontal loading tests where dimensions of the pile diameter and length, and loading point were varied, the horizontal pullout resistance and the rotational and translational movement pattern of the pile were investigated. As a result, the horizontal pullout resistance of the pile embedded in sands was dependent on the pile length, diameter, loading point, etc. The ultimate horizontal pullout load tended to increase as the loading point (h/L) moved to the bottom from the top of the pile, regardless of the ratio between the pile length and diameter (L/D), reached the maximum value at the point of h/L = 0.75, and decreased afterwards. When the horizontal pullout load acted on the upper part above the middle of the pile, the pile rotated clockwise and moved to the pullout direction, and the pivot point of the pile was located at 150-360mm depth below the ground surface. On the other hand, when the horizontal pullout load acted on the lower part of the pile, the pile rotated counterclockwise and travelled horizontally, and the rotational angle was very small.

  • The magnitude of the lateral resistance that resists the lateral movement of the pile is controlled by the amount of the pile movement and the strength and stiffness of soil. In this paper, we proposed an equation which produces the lateral resistance of the laterally loaded single pile using the strain wedge model of the soil deformation. The results of this equation is compared with results of model test, field test, p-y curve and other methods. It is found that the result of proposed equation is smaller than the result of model test. The results of loading test considerably coincide with those of proposed equation; however, a few of deviations are generated as the displacement of pile head increases. Moreover, coincidences exist between the results of the proposed equation and those of finite difference method.

  • The condition of initial movement for the river bed revetment using rip rap is a limit condition beyond which the lining is progressively destroyed as the separate elements are removed by the flow. In the case of the river bed revetment using mattress, however, after the initial movement the containment offered by the mesh remains. A new situation of equilibrium with a deformed river bed revetment using mattress is obtained, allowing it to withstand more severe conditions without compromising the resistance and without further bed deformation. Shield's coefficient for the river bed revetment using mattress is twice the value of that for the river bed revetment using rip rap. This means that with the same hydraulic behavior conditions, the average dimension of the rocks to be used in the river bed revetment using mattress is half that of the river bed revetment using rip rap rock. When the same size rocks are used the allowable velocity for the river bed revetment using mattress is more than twice, even as much as 3 or 4 times that for the river bed revetment using rip rap.

  • South Korea has achieved economic development rapidly during last 50 years. However, such fast economic development with industrialization caused skyrocketing increase of automobiles. The increase of automobile has created various problems in the cities. Problems like traffic congestion and accident, environmental pollution, noise, and vibration have done human beings, who are the principal agents harm. They have made citizens understand how important Green transportation, especially pedestrian movement, is. Recently, installation of pedestrian facilities has been expanded. If walking facilities are incorrectly designed, they can create inconvenience, danger and the state of emergency due to the lack of safety and pleasant feelings. However, since the importance of the facility designs has been neglected due to the lack of understanding, it is hard to improve the facilities. Therefore, we need various studies of walking simulation in order to research the designs for pedestrians' safety and convenience. The objective of this study is to analyze the pedestrians' behavior and movement in a transfer subway station. The improvement of walking environment was made after chasing and analyzing the pedestrians' movement which is investigated in the actual field using SimWalk simulation program.

  • GPS (Global Positioning System) is currently used widely in the ground section, such as surveying, mapping, geodesy, geophysics, the aviation section, such as aerial navigation and aerial photography, the sea section, including ship navigation and bathymetry, and space section, such as the satellite orbit and Earth's orbit. On the other hand, its use is limited due to the professional knowledge and expense to process the data for precise analysis. As a result, a web-based data processing solution for precise point positioning using GPS data was developed by c# for non-specialized people to process easily. In addition, the crustal movement speed of Korea after an earthquake was calculated to be an average of 30mm/year for each CORS, suggesting that it is possible to monitor crustal movement.

  • This paper examines the applicability of the Width Function Instantaneous Unit Hydrograph (WFIUH) with a case study of Cheongmi River in South Korea. The parameter values of WFIUH can be physically determined compared to the lumped hydrologic models, which are typically accompanied by parameter estimation procedures with gage records. Assuming uniformly distributed rainfall, the hydrographs obtained with the WFIUH show good agreement with observed data and also the results from HEC-1. A simple investigation of the effect from the rainstorm movement with the WFIUH demonstrates the ability of the proposed model and the need to consider the rainstorm movement effect on the resulting hydrographs for prediction purposes.

  • this study is to deduct the difference between regional and urban commercial trips by analyzing the characteristics of the regional and urban truck movements. To achieve this, we investigated the relation between the number of truck trips and various truck generation attributes such as truck attributes, origin and destination attributes, and commodity type using ordered logit models, which are separately estimated for regional and urban truck movements using truck diary data of Korea Transport Database (KTDB). According to the estimation results, regional and urban truck movements have different characteristics in truck attributes, origin and destination attributes and commodity type. Especially, the number of regional trucks trips increased as origin and destination are manufactural area and as the total value of products of industrial area in origin and destination increase.

  • A relaxed similarity theory which can be applied to river models with movable beds is established by modifying existing theory by Einstein and chien(1954). Experimental data collected from river models with movable beds were used to evaluate the applicability of the proposed theory. Effects of similarity of flow, ΔFΔM, and similarity of sediment movement, ΔFs, were examined by analyzing the behaviour of total river-bed change. The results show that the smaller ΔFΔM or ΔFs is, respectively, the larger total sedimentation is. The modified similarity theory established in this study would be useful and practical whenever it is impossible or very difficult to satisfy strict theoretical requirements concerning the river model experiments with movable beds. Keywords : river model, similarity of flow, similarity of sediment movement, sediment transport, river-bed change.

  • This study examines the two-level behavior of the toggle brace damper within a steel frame having a yielding pipe damper and rotational friction damper. The proposed system has two kinds of fuse for energy dissipation in two stages. In this mechanism, rotational friction damper rather than hinged connection is used in toggle brace system, connected to a pipe damper with a limited gap. In order to create a gap, bolted connection with the slotted hole is used, such that first a specific movement of the rotational friction damper solely is engaged but with an increase in movement, the yielding damper is also involved. The performance of the system is such that at the beginning of loading the rotational friction damper, as the first fuse, absorbs energy and with increasing the input load and further movement of the frame, yielding damper as the second fuse, along with rotational friction damper would dissipate the input energy. The models created by ABAQUS are subjected to cyclic and seismic loading. Considering the results obtained, the flexibility of the hybrid two-level system is more comparable to the conventional toggle brace damper. Moreover, this system sustains longer lateral displacements. The energy dissipation of these two systems is modeled in multi-story frames in SAP2000 software and their performance is analyzed using time-history analysis. According to the results, permanent relocations of the roof in the two-level system, in comparison with toggle brace damper system in 2, 5, and 8-story building frames, in average, decrease by 15, 55, and 37% respectively. This amount in a 5-story building frame under the earthquakes with one-third scale decreases by 64%.
