  • Objective: The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of oriental medicine conservative treatment on patients who show symptoms at the legion opposed to that shown in Magnetic Resonance Image(MRI) findings. Subject & Method: Oriental medicine treatment such as acupuncture and herbs was applied to two patients who were diagnosed as lateral herniated intervertebral disc of lumbar spine via MRI but whose pain and muscular force attenuation were shown at the opposed lower limb, for measuring its effects. Results: As for the two cases, the patients were favored in the Visual Analog Score (VAS) and the Straight leg Raising(SLR) test after the oriental medicine conservative treatment. In one case, the muscular force in the lower limb was favored. Conclusion: Based on the results in this study, oriental medicine conservative treatment might be effective on patients who show symptoms at the legion opposed to that shown in MRI findings.

  • Objectives : The Purpose of this study is to investigate the clinical application of conservative Korean treatment including hip joint MST for Bilateral Sacroillitis with Synovitis in Rt. Hip Joint Caused by Ankylosing Spondylitis. Methods : Patient is hospitalized at Dept. of Korean Internal Medicine, Jaseng Korean Medicine Hospital, diagnosed as Bilateral Sacroilitis with Synovitis in Rt. Hip Joint Caused by Ankylosing Spondylitis, and treated by herbal medicine, acupuncture, moxibustion, and hip joint MST. This study was measured by NRS(Numeric Rating Scale), SLRT(Straight leg raising test), Patrick test, and Blood test(ESR, CRP). Result : After conservative treatment, the patient's pain was controlled and NRS score was decreased. SLRT score also improved. Patrick test unchanged. ESR, CRP score was decreased. Conclusion : As seen in this one case, conservative Korean treatment including hip joint MST has a positive effect to control pain with Bilateral Sacroillitis with Synovitis in Rt. Hip Joint Caused by Ankylosing Spondylitis.

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study is to investigate the clinical application of Rocking forward, Rocking backward Exercise and MET(Muscle Energy Techniques) to three patients who had sway-back posture. Methods : Three patients diagnosed as sway-back posture, not have discogetic pain, were hospitalized Bu-Chun Jaseng hospital of Oriental Medicine about 20 days and they were treated by Rocking forward, Rocking backward Exercise and MET. To measure the outcome of the patients' improvement, we observed the X-ray of Whole spine and Numerical Rating Scale(NRS). Results : After being treated by Rocking forward, Rocking backward Exercise and MET, the patients' posture was significantly improved and the pain was reduced. The X-ray of Whole spine became almost normal and the improvement of patients' in the NRS score was detected. Conclusions : These results suggest that Rocking forward, Rocking backward Exercise and MET were effective treatment on patients who had sway-back posture.

  • Objectives : According to previous reports, heating-conduction acupuncture treatment is very effective for sprain and strain of ligament. But there was no report about pain aggravation by heating-conduction acupuncture and relief from bee venom injection. In this article, we report two cases of pain aggravation by heating-conduction acupuncture treatment and relief from bee venom injection. Methods : We used heating-conduction acupuncture treatment on possible sprain of sacroiliac ligament diagnosed by physical examination. Outcomes were measured by Visual Analogue Scale(VAS), Range of Motion(ROM) and Belt test, Goldthwait test. Results : The patient has shown an aggravation on pain and ROM. And after we use subcutaneous bee venom injection, pain has relieved and ROM improved. Belt test, Goldthwait test also changed from positive to negative. Conclusions : In this report, we assured the effect of Bee venom injection. Further well-designed, controlled studies and more cases are needed to differentiate the indication of heating-conduction acupuncture and bee venom injection.

  • Objectives : To evaluate the clinical utility of Muscle Energy Techniques(MET) in Elector Spinae Muscle on subjects. Methods : We compared electrical activity between a before MET and a after MET in Elector Spinae Muscle on subjects in same group(n=26) in dynamic flexion-reextension state during five seconds. We analyzed amplitudes and areas of electrical activity and Asymmetry Index(AI) and Median Edge Frequency(MEF). Results : 1. After MET in Elector Spinae Muscle on subjects were lower electrical activity than before MET in Elector Spinae Muscle on subjects but it is not a pointless observation(p<0.05). 2. AI of the after MET in Elector Spinae Muscle on subjects significantly decreased compared with before MET in Elector Spinae Muscle on subjects(p<0.05). 3. MEF of the after MET in Elector Spinae Muscle on subjects decreased compared with before MET in Elector Spinae Muscle on subjects but it is not a pointless observation(p<0.05). Conclusions : According to above results, there is clinical effect MET on subjects.

And we came to some conclusion about clinical tendencies as follows. Results and Conclusions: 1. Women had occupied more than men, And 10 persons in 30th were the most distribution of age. 2. Most patients used western medical hospital as primary hospital and after several days they started to search for orient medical treatments. 3. In the diagnosis through radiological test, cervical spine sprain was most(19 cases, 55.6%). The others were lumbar spine sprain(14 cases, 41.2%), fracture of other bone{4 cases, 11.8%), fracture of spine(3 cases, 8.8%), Intercranial hemorrhage(3 cases, 8.8%). 4. In chief complaint, low back pain was most(19 cases, 55.9%), The others were neck stiffness(17 cases, 50.0%), headache(13 cases, 38.2%), lower limb pain(9 cases, 26.5%). 5. Simple Disease had higher than complex disese at effective rate. 6. Both $43{\sim}60$ days admission and $15{\sim}21$ days admission were the best effective. $8{\sim}14$ days admission was next effective. 7. Early visit made more effective.

  • Object : This study was planned to show the influences of MET(muscle energy techniques) treatment and acupuncture treatment on iliopsoas muscles of sprain and strain of lumbar spine patients. Method : This study was carried out on the 39 patients who had been treated for their sprain and strain of lumbar spine from March 2 to October 15, 2010 in the department of oriental rehabilitaion medicine, Dongsuwon oriental medicine hospital. And 22 out of 39 patients had a tenderness and pain in their iliopsoas muscles. And we divided those 22 patients into 2 groups by blocked randomization; group A took near acupuncture point needling treatment on the iliopsoas muscles, group B took MET(muscle energy techniques) treatment on the iliopsoas muscles. To evaluate the efficiency of each treatment, all patients were examined with VAS(visual analogue scale) before treatment and after the 3rd, 5th treatment. Result : On the VAS, it was decreased significantly after treatment in all groups. And it didn't show the clear difference between two groups. Conclusion : In this study, it did not show statistical difference in VAS between two groups.

  • Objectives : This study was performed to report the effect of oriental medical treatments on the 4 patients with lateral epicondylitis of the elbow. Methods : The 4 patients were treated by Bee Venom acupuncture, Dong-Qi acupuncture, acupuncture on tender points of the origin of the extensor carpi radialis and taping on the extensor carpi radialis. The state of patients was measured by visual analog scale(VAS), elbow range of motion(ROM) and patient's subjective symptom grade(PSSG). Results : After mean 9.5 times of treatments, the recovery of elbow ROM was measured and significant pain relief was seen as the average of VAS changed from 10 to 1.25 and average of PSSG changed from 2.75 to 0.5 grade. Conclusions : These results suggest that oriental medical treatments including Bee Venom acupuncture, Dong-Qi acupuncture, acupuncture, taping are effective to improve the lateral epicondylitis of the elbow.
