Codeposited of boron nitride(BN) particle dispersed into electroless nickel-phosphours (Ni-P) and nickel-boron(Ni-B) platings were studied for the purpose of developing the wear resistance and lubricity. BN can be codeposited from electroless nickel plating bath with $NaH_2PO_2$ and $NaBH_4$ as the reducing agents. Most dispersolids were distributed uniformly in the Ni-P and Ni-B matrix. Abrasion loss decreased with increasing amount of codeposits and reached a constant value 2.4 percent by volume percent of BN particle. The wear resistance and the friction coefficient of the heat treated BN composite coatings were improved about three times than that of as-coatings. The BN composite coatings were more wear resistance than hard chromium. Ni-B-BN composite coatings showed lower wear resistance and friction coefficient than Ni-P-BN. The BN content of the deposite was found to be 2.4 v/o for these optium conditions.
Chromium nitride (CrN) samples with two different layer structures (multilayer and single layer) were coated on bipolar plates of polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFC) using the reactive sputtering method. The effects with respect to layer structure on corrosion resistance and overall cell performance were investigated. A continuous and thin chromium nitride layer ($Cr_{0.48}\;N_{0.52}$) was formed on the surface of the SUS 316L when the nitrogen flow rate was 10 sccm. The electrochemical stability of the coated layers was examined using the potentiodynamic and potentiostatic methods in the simulated corrosive circumstances of the PEMFC under $80^{\circ}C$. Interfacial contact resistance (ICR) between the CrN coated sample and the gas diffusion layer was measured by using Wang's method. A single cell performance test was also conducted. The test results showed that CrN coated SUS316L with multilayer structure had excellent corrosion resistance compared to single layer structures and single cell performance results with $25\;cm^2$ in effective area also showed the same tendency. The difference of the electrochemical properties between the single and multilayer samples was attributed to the Cr interlayer layer, which improved the corrosion resistance. Because the coating layer was damaged by pinholes, the Cr layer prevented the penetration of corrosive media into the substrate. Therefore, the CrN with a multilayer structure is an effective coating method to increase the corrosion resistance and to decrease the ICR for metallic bipolar plates in PEMFC.
Austenitic stainless steel 316L has been used a lot of applications because of its high corrosion resistance and formability. In addition, copper brazing is employed to create complex shape of 316L stainless steel for various engineering parts. In such system, copper-based filler metals make galvanic cell at metal/filler metal interface, and it accelerates corrosion of stainless steel. Furthermore, Cu-rich region formed by diffused copper in austenitic stainless steel can promote a pitting corrosion. In this study, we used an ammonia (NH3) gas to nitride the 316L stainless steel for improving the corrosion resistance. The thickness of the nitride (nitrogen high) layer increased with the treatment temperature, and the surface hardness also increased. The potentiodynamic polarization test showed the improvement of corrosion resistance of 316L stainless steel by enhancing the passivation on nitride layer. However, in case of high temperature nitriding, a chromium nitride was formed and its fraction increased, so that the corrosion resistance was decreased compared to the intact 316L stainless steel.
Chromium and chromium nitride were selected as potential barriers to prevent fuel-clad chemical interaction (FCCI) between the cladding and the fuel material. In this study, ferritic/martensitic HT-9 steel and misch metal were used to simulate the reaction between the cladding and fuel fission product, respectively. Radio frequency magnetron sputtering was used to deposit Cr and CrN films onto the cladding, and the gas flow rates of argon and nitrogen were fixed at certain values for each sample to control the deposition rate and the crystal structure of the films. The samples were heated for 24 h at 933 K through the diffusion couple test, and considerable amount of interdiffusion (max. thickness: $550{\mu}m$) occurred at the interface between HT-9 and misch metal when the argon and nitrogen were used individually. The elemental contents of misch metal were detected at the HT-9 through energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy due to the interdiffusion. However, the specimens that were sputtered by mixed gases (Ar and $N_2$) exhibited excellent resistance to FCCI. The thickness of these CrN films were only $4{\mu}m$, but these films effectively prevented the FCCI due to their high adhesion strength (frictional force ${\geq}1,200{\mu}m$) and dense columnar microstructures.

This paper describes the fabrication and characteristics of CrN thin-film type pressure sensors, in which the sensing elements were deposited on SuS. 630 diaphragm by DC reactive magnetron sputtering in an argon-nitride atmosphere(Ar-(10%)N$_2$). The optimized condition of CrN thin-film sensing elements was thickness range of 3500$\AA$ and annealing condition(300$\^{C}$, 3 hr) in Ar-10%N$_2$ deposition atmosphere. Under optimum conditions, the CrN thin-films for strain gauges is obtained a high resistivity, ρ=1147.65 $\mu$Ωcm, a low temperature coefficient of resistance, TCR=186ppm/$\^{C}$ and a high temporal stability with a good longitudinal, 11.17. The output sensitivity of fabricated CrN thin-film type pressure sensors is 2.36 mV/V, 4∼20nA and the maximum non-linearity is 0.4%FS and hysteresis is less than 0.2%FS.

The physical, electrical and piezoresitive characteristics of CrN(chromium nitride) thin-films on silicon substrates have been investigated for use as strain gauges. The thin-film depositions have been carried out by DC reactive magnetron sputtering in an argon-nitrogen atmosphere(Ar-(5∼25 %)Na$_2$). The deposited CrN thin-films with thickness of 3577${\AA}$ and annealing conditions(300$^{\circ}C$, 48 hr) in Ar-10 % N$_2$deposition atmosphere have been selected as the ideal piezoresistive material for the strain gauges. Under optimum conditions, the CrN thin-films for the strain gauges is obtained a high electrical resistivity, $\rho$=1147.65 ${\mu}$$\Omega$cm, a low temperature coefficient of resistance, TCR=-186 ppm/$^{\circ}C$ and a high temporal stability with a good longitudinal gauge factor, GF=11.17.
The mechanical properties of the hydrogen valve responsible for supplying and blocking hydrogen gas in a hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicle (FCEV) were researched. Mechanical properties by hydrogen embrittlement were investigated by coating chromium nitride (CrN) and titanium nitride (TiN) on aluminum alloy by arc ion plating method. The coating layer was deposited to a thickness of about 2 ㎛, and a slow strain rate test (SSRT) was conducted after hydrogen embrittlement to determine the hydrogen embrittlement resistance of the CrN and TiN coating layers. The CrN-coated specimen presented little decrease in mechanical properties until 12 hours of hydrogen charging due to its excellent resistance to hydrogen permeation. However, both the CrN and TiN-coated specimens exhibited deterioration in mechanical properties due to the peeling of the coating layer after 24 hours of hydrogen charging. The specimens coated at 350 ℃ presented a significant decrease in ultimate tensile strength due to abnormal grain growth.

Compositional gradient CrNx coatings were fabricated using arc ion plating in Ar/$N_2$ gaseous mixture by gradually increasing $N_2$ flux rate from 0 to 120 SCCM. The effect of negative substrate bias on the film microstructure and mechanical properties were systematically investigated with XRD, GDOES, and SEM. The results show that substrate bias has an important influence on film growth and microstructure of gradient CrNx coatings. The coatings mainly crystallized in the mixture of hexagonal $Cr_{2}N$ and fcc CrN phases. By increasing substrate bias, film microstructure evolved from an apparent columnar structure to an equiaxed one. With increasing substrate bias, deposition rate first increased, and then decreased. The maximum of deposition rate was 15 nm/min obtained at a bias of -50V.

Composites layer of Al-Cr-Ni-O system was prepared on a steel plate by hydro-thermal process at $700^{\circ}C$ for 12 hours, which phase identification and thermal conductivity were determined. The composites layer consisted of aluminum nitride, alumina, chromium carbide and aluminium, which density was $3.7kg/m^3$. The thermal conductivity of the coating layer determined by thermal data acquisition system was about 98.0 W/m/ which depended on the AlN content. Numerical modelling of the heat transfer behavior of the coating layer was well agreement with the empirical data.
