Understanding of Resilience and Its Application through Small Group Activities in Christian Universities (자아탄력성의 이해와 기독교대학에서의 소그룹 활동을 통한 적용)

  • The purpose of this study is to find the correlation between elements of resilience and small group activities in the university, and to explore small group activities as a protective and a positive factor in controlling the stress of college students. As the first part of the study, positive roles of resilience to the stress of college students and the elements that promote the efficiency of resilience are analyzed. The study precedent in detail and four elements of resilience are presented as following; optimistic realism, vitality, ability to control emotion, and interpersonal ability, addressing the faith in God is one of the strong positive factors for developing resilience. Then, this study deals with how the four elements of resilience relates to the characteristics of small group activities. In conclusion, this study suggests Christian universities to develop small group activities because they can develop each of the four elements of resilience of college students. Christian universities have a missional duty and the responsibility to help college students experience real happiness in their lives. Therefore, if Christian universities understand the effectiveness of resilience of college students and find out the correlation between resilience and faith, they can help students not only to live a positive life in their generation, but also to experience the authentic happiness.

The Influence of Perceived Stress on Subjective Well-being: The Mediating Effect of Resilience and Spiritual Experience (기독대학생의 지각된 스트레스가 주관적 웰빙에 미치는 영향: 회복탄력성과 영적 경험의 매개효과)

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze mediating effect of resilience and daily spiritual experiences in the relationship of stress situations and subjective well-being of Christian college students. The subjects of this study were 157 Christian college students in a certain University which is located in Seoul, and mediating effect were analyzed through structural equation model. As a result of the analysis, first, there was a significant negative correlation between perceived stress and subject well-being. Second, resilience and spiritual experience had a full mediating effect on the relationship of perceived stress and subjective well-being. Third, in the relationship of perceived stress and subjective well-being, indirect effect through resilience has a greater mediating effect than spiritual daily experience. Implications of these results were concluded that spiritual daily experience of Christian college students is a significant variable in terms of stress and happiness. Apart from spiritual experience, however, resilience also could be a very important variable that mediates stress and happiness for Christian college students. In addition, suggestions for future research were discussed.

Application Plan of Bible Storytelling in Writing Education of Christian Universities (기독교 대학 글쓰기 교육에서 성경 스토리텔링의 활용 방안)

  • The purpose of this study is to suggest a writing education paradigm appropriate for the ideology and ideal persons of Christian universities, and to show the effective application plan. For this, this study utilizes the ideas of digital writing in the concept of digital literacy education. The paradigm of "the digital writing education using bible storytelling" consists of two activities. The first one is 'bible listening and observation,' and the second one is 'media text creation and sharing'. In the first activity, there are two steps: 'listening and observation of bible storytelling' and 'exploration and meditation.' In the second activity, there are also two steps: 'application and action,' and 'sharing in communities.' After the suggestion, this study proposes the application plan for the paradigm. They are 'the utilization of various media and the merit of interaction,' healing effectiveness in an individual and a community,' 'building expertises in both letter writing and Christian education(Divinity),' 'building expertises in both letter writing and media literacy,' and 'expanded application toward diverse patterns of writing.'

Preoperative Chemotherapy-Induced Apoptosis in Osteosarcoma (골육종에서 수술 전 항암화학요법에 의한 고사)

  • The purpose of this study was to verify the importance of apoptosis in genesis of osteosarcoma and whether apoptosis may play an important role as a predictive factor for the response to chemotherapy. Of the patients who were diagnosed osteosarcoma between January 1995 and June 1999, ten patients were selected. All specimens were obtained before and after preoperative chemotherapy and examined for the occurrence of apoptosis. Apoptosis was investigated by in situ end-labeling technique on paraffin-embedded sections and apoptotic indices were calculated before and after chemotherapy. The ages of ten patients ranged from 15 to 59 with equal sex ratio. All patients completed the planned pre-operative chemotherapy. Apoptosis occurs in osteosarcoma and apoptotic indices are increased after chemotherapy. Mean apoptotic index (AI) before and after chemotherapy were 17.2 (range 6-28.9) and 26.3 (9.6-46.2), respectively. Apoptotic cells were usually present around the necrotic area. The AI was increased as the progression of stage and in responder group more than in non-responder. Apoptosis is induced by pre-operative chemotherapy and the response is variable. Changes in AI levels before and after chemotherapy may possibly predict an individual patient's overall response.

  • Ornithine transcarbamylase(OTC) deficiency is the most common of all the urea cycle disorders. In this X-linked disorder, the hemizygote males are more severely affected than heterozygote females. The Heterozygote female may have mild episodic hyperammonemia symptoms in late infancy or childhood(late onset) or no clinical manifestations. Here we report a 6 year-old girl with late onset OTC deficiency who showed recurrent episodic lethargy, mental confusion and ataxia. On mutation analysis using DNA sequencing after PCR amplification of the 10 exons of OTC gene, G to T transversion in codon 221, causing substitution of asparagine for lysine was detected in exon 6.

Educational Ministries in Korean Churches amid the COVID-19 Pandemic (코로나 시기 한국교회의 교육목회에 관한 사례연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to identify the direction of future Christian ministry by examining the educational/pastoral ministries of Korean churches during the COVID-19 period. The study used the case study method, where pastors from four different churches were the primary sources of data. Although each church has its own unique ministry, special early morning prayer meetings, family worship services, family Vacation Bible Schools, Bible writing and reading programs, and on-line discipleship training programs were common. In addition, each church implemented special programs that reflected the characteristics and needs of the church, like a talk show, visible radio, surfing meeting, and book-making of Bible manuscripts. Based on these results, ministry programs reflecting the church's pastoral philosophy, strengthening community consciousness, restoring the spiritual function of the family, utilizing online teaching methods, and psychological support for the underprivileged are proposed. In addition, the recovery of Christian publicity and the help from denomination or specialized institutions to develop the programs and online materials were suggested. Through this study, the direction of educational/pastoral ministry in a time of COVID-19 and post-COVID-19 is proposed.

  • As can be seen from the statement by the UN Secretary-General that "COVID-19 is a crisis with a woman's face," women have experienced great crisis, pain, and difficulties caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. This study examined the situations of women through statistical data and research studies. Through this study, economic, socio-cultural, and psycho-emotional aspects were dealt with in detail, and how these issues appeared in relation to "caring" were examined. In addition, as a response of the church to these problems and crises, pastoral theological reflection was promoted through "Ethics of Care" and "caring ministry". The "caring ministry" of the church extends not only to personal care within the church, but also to social, cultural, economic, political, and ecological issues, and the church has a missionary mission to respond to these issues related to disasters with a public nature. Furthermore, through educational ministry, the change of values and mindsets on "care" and inequality and Diakonia, the loving care of the church community, should be encouraged.
