  • The objective of this study is to introduce the characteristics and establishing process of national regional policy for the sunbelt developmentr initiative of the southern coastal area in Korea. Discussion on the development of southern coastal area of Korea with some members of the Korea Society of Future Studies began in the early 1990s, and its discussion was continued with the activities by the Committee on Regional Unity of the Grand National Party and Namhaean Forum. The sunbelt development initiative was selected as one of the major commitments of the Grand National Party in the 17th presidential election of Korea. Since the launching of the Lee Myung-bak government, the Presidential Committee on Balanced National Development made a comprehensive plan for sunbelt development of southern coastal area(CPSD), and this plan was confirmed by central governmental planning in May 2010. CPSD is meaningful in terms of the fir first national regional planning and legal plan in Korea. The target year of CPSD is 2020, and some projects by CPSD started in 2010. However, there are many negative views that CPSD will not be going too well. Therefore, new efforts and roles of geographers who participated in the process of planning of CPSD are required for the success of CPSD.

  • To investigate the characteristics of sand sediment topography in the Yeonggwang coastal area of Chonnam and to collect evidence of the past extreme events causing coastal flooding, three sites were surveyed among the sediments of Baeksoo-eup Hassari. In this study, the changes of particle characteristics, chemical composition, and the age of deposition of sediments were investigated. The sediments near Baeksoonam Elementary School at the elevation of 10m near the paleo-coastline are estimated to have been deposited at about 3,400 years ago and the grain size of the upper part of the sandy layer is in the range of $2.47-2.11{\varphi}$. The burial age of the sediment layer at Sadeung junction(BSN-B) was about 100 years. Considering the distance from the current coastline, the sands forming the dune are estimated to have been moved or deposited from the nearby area or the other dune on the front side. The mean grain size is observed to be fining upward. Especially, the mean of the upper part is about $2.3{\varphi}$, which is similar to other survey points. The averaged grain size of the lower part of the BSNC (Hasari-1 Gu) was $2.196{\varphi}$ and the upper part was $2.16{\varphi}$. The sorting showed that the upper part was slightly poorer than the lower, and it was difficult to specify the change of the environment. The burial age of the lower layer, which contains shells, was about 300 years. Considering previous studies, this shell layer is presumed to have formed by coastal flooding, such as a storm surge.

  • Viral hemorrhagic septicemia (VHS) is one of the most serious viral disease of farmed rainbow trout and some marine fishes in Europe and North America. It has been reported in various marine fish species of Asian countries and induced cause mass mortality in Japanese flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus) culturing in Korea. The aims of this study were to monitor VHSV in wild marine fishes and to give critical information for controling the disease through prophylactic methods. Prevalence of the viral disease, geological distribution and reservoir of the virus were investigated using wild marine fishes captured in southern coast and east china sea for two years. (Reverse Transcriptase Polymerase Chain Reaction) RT-PCR results showed that VHSV were detected in 17 (10.6%) out of 160 fish. G gene sequences of viral strains isolated in this study were closely related to that of a reference strain, KVHS01-1, belonging to VHSV genotype Ⅰ. The results suggest that some of wild marine fishes are VHSV carriers and may spread the pathogen directly to fish farmed in coastal area.

  • Red sea bream iridovirus disease (RSIVD) cause massive economic losses in marine aquaculture industry in Korea. The causative agent of this disease (RSIV) infects a wide range of fish species. The aims of this study were to monitor RSIV in wild marine fishes and to give critical information for controling the disease through prophylactic methods. Prevalence of the viral disease, geological distribution and reservoir of the virus were investigated using wild marine fishes captured in southern coast and east china sea for two years. (Polymerase Chain Reaction) PCR results showed that RSIV were detected in 39 (24.3%) out of 160 fish. MCP gene sequences of viral strains isolated in this study were closely related to that of a reference strain, red seabream-K, belonging to Megalocytivirus subgroup Ⅲ. The results suggest that some of wild marine fishes are RSIV carriers and may spread the pathogen directly to fish farmed in coastal area.

  • The objective of this study is to establish a methodology of bioregional approach for coastal area management as a basis for planning and design. Focusing on the bioregional approach, this study reviewed currently prevailing approaches such as watershed approach and ecological unit approach for planning and management purposes. This research placed its geographical focus on the landward watershed of the Bay of Hampyong located in Chonnam Province, dealing efficiently with shortcomings of existing researches which mainly covered seaward tidal flats without considering outside effects. The main methods of the study are classified into indoor computerized map analysis and field work. For computer analysis, printed maps and digital maps have been analysed, and GIS techniques have been utilized for its synthesis and finalizations. Field work included on-site landscape analysis and verification of a tentative place unit boundary. As a practical step, criteria for classifying bioregion were presented and the selected criteria included : topography & water ways ; roads & administrative boundaries ; habitat types ; and visual enclosure. First, based on the data of topography and water ways, broad classification work was performed and corrections were made based on data drawn out from other criteria. A tentative place unit map was drawn and revised through field visits. This study encompassed an initial but integral part for bioregional approach in landward watershed management of a coastal area. As results of the study, the necessity and efficiency of bioregional approach which considers environmental and cultural components systematically have been presented.

  • In this study, we analyzed the real time video image obtained from the video monitoring system to grasp the shoreline, beach width, and area change of Haeundae beach. The video monitoring techniques enabled continuous monitoring for a long period at a much lower cost than general survey methods. It was possible to grasp quantitative beach variation characteristics of Haeundae beach through image acquisition, rectification, and image processing of video images. According to the monitoring results, the erosion rate of Haeundae beach in spring and summer was -19.8% in 2014 and -6.7% in 2015. The erosion rate in 2016 was -6.4%, which showed that the erosion rate in spring and summer continued to decrease. In particular, the influence of the erosion at the time of typhoon CHABA was revealed to be smaller than in the past. It can be concluded that these variations were due to beach width expansion by beach nourishment and the installation of submerged breakwaters.

  • The fluctuation in the abundance and species composition of fish was investigated using a fyke net with entrances on both sides in the coastal waters of Geumo-do, Yeosu, Chollanam-do, Korea, from May 2003 to April 2004. A total of 2,379 fishes (392.13 kg) were sampled and classified into 11 orders, 34 families, and 53 species. The dominant orders were Perciformes, Scorpaeniformes, and Pleuronectiformes, which accounted for 67.9% of the collected fishes. The dominant species was Acanthopagrus schlegelii (235 individuals, 19.00 kg), followed by Konosirus punctatus (182 individuals, 9.53 kg), and Apogon lineatus (161 individuals, 1.69 kg). The number of individuals and biomass were higher in spring and summer than in winter, and the monthly variation may be related to the water temperature. The diversity index was highest in September (H'=2.9) and lowest in December (H'=1.8). The evenness index was highest in August (J=0.9) and lowest in December (J=0.7). The dominance index was highest in December (D=0.7) and lowest in August (D=0.2). The economically important species in this area are Acanthopagrus schlegelii, Konosirus punctatus, Lateolabrax maculatus, Argyrosomus argentatus, Trichiurus lepturus, Lateolabrax japonicus, and Sebastes schlegelii.

  • The global sea level rise has an effect on eco-environmental change by the inundation and erosion in the coastal area. Forecasting model on the change of morpho-ecological environments by the sea level change will give us information for coastal area management by predicting environmental changes of the up-coming future. This research aimed to foresee eco-environmental changes by the sea level rise in coastal area. Prediction model used SLAMM model developed to forecast coastal changes by IPCC scenario. The model predicted centennial environmental changes in the mouth of Han river and Nakdong river, Suncheon and Hampyeung bay as case areas. To sum up the research findings, in the estuary of the Han river, tidal flat was gradually disappeared from the year 2075, scrubmarsh and saltmarsh belts were developed. In the Nakdong River estuary, scrubmarsh was decreased from the year 2025, tidal flat was deposited from the year 2050, and also, the Gimhae plain was partially inundated, and wetlands were formed. In the Hampyeung bay, saltmarsh was deposited in the year 2025, tidal flat expanded until 2050 was partially submerged after that time. Tidal flat of Suncheon bay was disappeared by the inundation after 2025, and saltmarsh was developed in the embayment.

  • In order to understand what leads to the appearance of harmful Chattonella algae in the Yeosu coastal waters of Korea, we measured environmental parameters every week at one station from May to November, 2006, and April to October, 2007. Four species of Chattonella appeared during the monitoring period: C. antiqua, C. globosa, C. marina and C. ovata. The range of water temperature and salinity were $15.0-27.9^{\circ}C$ and 17.6~33.0 psu, respectively, when Chattonella appeared, and their maximum cell density (4,840 cells/L) was at $27.1^{\circ}C$ and 33.0 psu. During the monitoring periods, the range of dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN), phosphate (DIP) and chlorophyll $\alpha$ (Chl-$\alpha$) concentrations in surface waters were $1.20-52.23\;{\mu}M$ ($8.59{\pm}8.97\;{\mu}M$), $0.03-1.56\;{\mu}M$ ($0.47{\pm}0.31\;{\mu}M$) and $0.45-31.12\;{\mu}g/L$ ($3.58{\pm}4.77\;{\mu}g/L$), respectively. Chattonella occurred at low cell density when the Chl-$\alpha$ concentration increased because of supplied nutrients, whereas their cell density increased during the periods of rapid decrease in Chl-$\alpha$. The results of growth experiments based on batch culture showed that the half saturation constant ($K_s$) of C. antiqua on ammonium (${NH_4}^-$), nitrate (${NO_3}^-$) and phosphate (${PO_4}^{2-}$) were $3.89{\mu}M$, $5.01\;{\mu}M$ and $0.63\;{\mu}M$, respectively. These Ks values are higher than those reported for diatoms and other flagellates at the DIP concentration (average $0.47{\mu}M$) of Yeosu coastal waters. Although the maximum specific growth rate (${\mu}_{max}$) of C. antiqua was lower than diatoms, it was higher than those of other flagellates. Therefore, our results indicate that the DIP level in the study area was too low to support Chattonella blooms, although Chattonella species have physiological characteristics that enable them to grow more rapidly than other flagellates when nutrient levels are higher than their $K_s$.
