Effects of Intaking of Red Ginseng Products on Correlationship between Obesity and Blood Lipids (홍삼류의 섭취가 비만과 혈중 지질의 상호관계에 미치는 영향)

  • Obesity is the risk factor of atherosclerosis and not only increases triglyceride concentration in blood but also decreases relatively the ratio of TG to HDL-Cholesterol in blood. In case of obesity, systolic blood pressure is also increased in responding the increase of TG in blood. Index of obesity in red ginseng-taking group (ginseng group) was lower as compared with non-red ginseng-taking group (control group). The TG concentration, the ratio of triglyceride to HDL-cholesterol in blood and systolic blood pressure were decreased in the subjects of ginseng group compared with that in control group. It is inferred that long-term intake of ginseng products may help to prevent the risk of atherosclerosis and obesity.

A Pilot Study of Sa-am Acupuncture Treatment Used by Sham Acupuncture for the Simple Obesity (이중맹검용 피내침을 이용한 단순성 비만여성의 사암침 치료효과에 관한 임상선행연구)

  • Objectives : To present proper protocol as global standard- clinical study about acupuncture treatment, and to demonstrate effectiveness of Sa-am Acupuncture treatment for obesity. Methods : We randomly allocated participants to treatment group 1 and 2. The group 1 is treated by real acupuncture and the group 2 is treated by Kim Sham Acupuncture. We treated Bi-jang seung-gyeok (脾臟勝格) ; Daedon(LR1), EunBaek(SP1) Gyoung-geo(LU8) Sang-gu(SP5), to both group. Primary outcomes were measured by the Body Composition Analysis(Inbody. Korea). Secondary outcomes were measured by Blood Cholesterol, Triglyceride, HDL, LDL Cholesterol. Results : After treatment, the group 1 shown significant weight loss that analysed by Kruskal-Wallis certification, but didn't show notable change in body fat, total cholesterol, triglyceride, HDL cholesterol, LDL cholesterol. Group 2 didn't show significant change in body weight, body fat, triglyceride, HDL cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, but total cholesterol was notably decreased. Controled group was not changed in body weight, body fat. Aftter treatment, 3 groups didn't show significant change in body weight, body fat, triglyceride, HDL cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, total cholesterol.

Cholesterol-Lowering Effects of Soybean Products (Curd or Curd Residue) in Rats (백서에 있어서 콩제품(두부, 비지)급여의 콜레스테롤 저하효과)

  • The effects of soybean products(bean curd and curd residue) on the cholesterol profiles of serum and liver were studied in rats. Male rats were fed on purified diets, supplemented with cholesterol, containing casein (CAS), dried bean curd(DBC), or mixture of casein and dried bean curd residue(CBCD, 3:1, w/w) as a protein source for 4weeks. Dietary DBC and CBCD, compared with CAS, reduced markedly the concentration of serum cholesterol. The concentration of HDL-cholesterol was significantly higher in the CAS group than in the CBCD group, but there were no significant differences in the ratio of HDL-cholesterol to total cholesterol. Liver cholesterol was lower in the DBC group than in the CAS and CBCD groups. The results suggest an effective cholesterol-lowering action of soybean products in rats fed on cholesterolemic diets, and further a possibility that than curd dreg decrease the concentration of serum cholesterol, regardless of the presence of animal protein in diets.

  • The development of radioimmunoassay (RIA) for high-density lipoprotein (HDL) in Japanese quail serum will contribute to the screening of drugs acting on cholesterol transport. We have developed a double antibody RIA method for J. quail HDL. The first antibody was raised in rabbit by immunization of HDL isolated by the dextrane sulfate-$Mn^{#}$ precipitation method. For the preparation of raclioiodinated antigen, HDL was further purified by combination of electrophoretic procedure. Using the second antibody raised in goat by rabbit IgG, we have furnished the RIA method for HDL. It showed high specificity and sensitivity of working assay range, 0.1-33.mu.g HDL/tube. There was no correlation between the radioimmunoassay of HDL and the enzyme assay of HDL-cholesterol.

  • Purpose : Intravenous immunoglobulin(IVIG) has been used as an immunomodulatory treatment for several immune-mediated diseases. The early effect of high-dose IVIG on biochemical profiles including lipids and proteins was evaluated in patients with Kawasaki disease(KD). Methods : Twelve children with KD(nine boys) were treated with IVIG of 2 g/kg over 12 hours. Serial sera were collected from the patients four times : before IVIG treatment and two hours, 24 hours and seven days after IVIG treatment. The samples were frozen at $-20^{\circ}C$ before biochemical analysis. Results : A significant decrease in albumin concentration was found two hours h and 24 hours after IVIG treatment, but this recovered to the pretreatment level after seven days. Total cholesterol and triglyceride increased slightly after seven day. A significant decrease in HDL-cholesterol and C-reactive protein was seen two hours and 24 hours after IVIG treatment. Conclusion : High-dose IVIG affects immediate changes in protein profiles and HDL-cholesterol in KD. Changes in HDL-cholesterol induced by IVIG may be the result of changes in systemic protein metabolism.

Effects of TongBiEum(TBE) on Hyperlipidemia Induced by a Sucrose-rich Diet

  • Objectives : This study aimed to elucidate the effects of TBE on hyperlipidemia. Methods : We studied the effects of TBE on hyperlipidemia through gene expressions related with lipid metabolism and serum triglyceride as well as total and HDL-cholesterol levels, and perceived histological changes. Results : The present studies demonstrate that TBE can reduce the rise in plasma cholesterol and TG levels induced by a high-cholesterol diet and also reverse pre-established hypercholesterolemia and hypertriglycemia. In the TBE group total cholesterol levels decreased, TG levels decreased, but HDL-cholesterol levels also decreased. In the analysis of absolute and relative liver weight, TBE inhibited the weight gain induced by a high-cholesterol diet. In the histological observations, lipid droplet and apoptotic change in the TBE treated group were less compared with the control group. In the serum biochemical analysis, a difference of serum AST and ALT changes among groups was not shown, but TG and total cholesterol levels were less and HDL level decreased compared with the control group. In the gene expression related with TG and cholesterol metabolism, DGAT decreased slightly but ACAT decreased more as compared with control and Lipidil groups. Conclusion : From this study, we can infer that TBE possesses a hypolipidemic effect by inhibiting the intestinal absorption and storage of exogenous and endogenous cholesterol.

Effect of Dansamchunghyul-tang on Hyperlipidemia in Rat (단삼청혈탕이 백서의 고지혈증에 미치는 영향)

  • Dansamchunghyul-tang(丹參淸血湯) is a new formula consist of Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix and some oriental herbs to treatment of hyperlipidemia. In this study, we investigated the effects of the water extract of Dansamchunghyul-tang(DCT) on hyperlipidemia of the rat. We here studied the influence of DCT on hyperlipidemia in Sprague-Dawley rats. The hyperlipidemia was induced by Triton WR-1339 (tyloxapol) intravenous injection at 200mg/kg body weight. After 18 h, blood was collected for the determination of plasma total cholesterol, triglyceride, phospholipid, HDL-cholesterol, and LDL-cholesterol concentrations. In the model of hyperlipidemia induced by triton WR-1339 in rats, DCT showed decreasing effects on total cholesterol, triglyceride, phospholipid level significantly, in a dose-dependent fashion. DCT showed dose-dependent effects on HDL-cholesterol and LDL-cholesterol level insignificantly. In conclusion, DCT showed significant effects on hyperlipidemia, and the present findings indicate that DCT may prove potentially useful for treatment of hyperlipidemia.

Effects of Ojuck-san on Hyperlipidemia in Rats (오적산(五積散)이 흰쥐의 고지혈증에 미치는 영향(影響)에 대한 실험적(實驗的) 연구(硏究))

  • In order to study the effects of Ojuck-san on hyperlipidemia, we divided the rats into three groups(normal group, control group & sample group) and performed the experimental research. Hyperlipidemia rats were induced by oral for 14days. The sample group was administerd the extract of Ojuck-san for 14 days and control group was administerd equal dose of oral. And then we measured the amount of serum Total cholesterol, Triglyceride, LDL-cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, Phospholipid, Cholinesterase and Cardiac risk factor. The results were as follows : 1. Ojuck-san showed decreasing effects on Total cholesterol, Triglyceride, LDL -cholesterol, and Phospholipid level in serum significantly(p<0.001). 2. Ojuck-san showed increasing effects on HDL-cholesterol level and Cholinesterase in serum significantly(p<0.05). 3. Ojuck-san showed decreasing effects on Cardiac risk factor in serum significantly.(p<0.001). According to the above results, Ojuck-san showed significant decreasing effects on hyperlipidemia, and it is considered that it is appropriate to apply for hyperlipidemia.

Effects of Pumpkin Water Extract Supplement on Serum Lipid and Fasting Glucose Levels in Female Collegians (호박찜 추출물의 보충섭취가 여대생의 혈중 지질과 혈당에 미치는 영향)

  • To elucidate the effect of a 4 week dietary supplementation with pumpkin water extract on serum lipid and fasting glucose levels, 41 female collegians residing in the Gyeonggi area were recruited. The subjects were divided into three groups: placebo-control (PC, n=11), treatment A (TA, 100 ml/day, n=13), and treatment B (TB, 300 ml/day, n=17). Total serum cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein (HDL)-cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein (LDL)-cholesterol, triglyceride (TG), and fasting glucose were analyzed. The average age, height, weight, and body mass index of the subjects were 21.3 years, 161.1 cm, 53.0 kg, and 20.4 $kg/m^2$, respectively. The average total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, TG, and fasting glucose level (mg/dl) were 171.4${\pm}$26.1, 63.5${\pm}$11.4, 92.6${\pm}$22.9, 76.8${\pm}$32.0, and 89.1${\pm}$8.2, respectively. There were no significant differences among the three groups in any measured parameters, and between the pre- and post-study values of the all parameters. The results indicated that the 4 week pumpkin water extract supplementation (100 ml, 300 ml) did not influence the serum total cholesterol, HDL-cholesterol, LDL-cholesterol, TG and fasting glucose level in female collegians.

The Effect of Aloe on the Bioactivity of Ovariectomized Rats (난소를 절제한 흰쥐의 생리활성에 미치는 알로에의 영향)

  • In order to observe the bioactivity of ovariectomized rats, ovariectomized group (Ovx), nonovariectomized group(Sham) and ovariectomized aloe-treat group(Ovx+Aloe) were made. Lipidperoxides of liver and kidney, serum AST.ALT, BUN, total cholesterol and HDL-cholesterol were investigated as follows. Lipidoxides of the liver and the kidney in Ovx group were 1.74 times and 1.38 times increased compared to Sham group respectively. But they were significantly decreased in Ovx+Aloe group compared to Ovx group. Serum AST and ALT in Ovx group were increased 1.49 times and 1.65 times respectively compared to Sham group respectively. But they were decreased compared to Ovx group. Serum total cholesterol in Ovx group was increased 1.48 times compared to Sham group. While it was increased 50% in Ovx+Aloe group. Serum HDL-cholesterol in Ovx group was decreasd 23$\%$ compared to Sham group. While it was increasd 58% in Ovx+Aloe group compared to Ovx group. Serum BUN in Ovx group was increased slightly compared to Sham group. In Ovx+Aloe serum BUN had no change compared to Ovx group.
