Relationship between chlorophyll a in the East China Sea and spectral bands (412, 443,490, (510), 555, (676,765) in) of OSMI (Ocean Scanning Multi-Spectral Imager) including the profile multi-spectral radiometer (PRR-800) was studied. The values of remote sensing reflectance (Rrs) at the bands corresponding to the field chlorophyll a in α in the East China Sea were much higher than those in clear waters off California, USA. In case of the particle absorptions related to the chlorophyll a concentration at the spectral bands (440, 670 nm) were much higher in the East China Sea than the ones in the clean waters off California. The normalized water leaving radiances (nLw) at 412, 443, 490, 555 m of OSMI and field chlorophyll a in the East China Sea were correlated each other. According to the results, the relationship between field chlorophyll a and nLw 410 m in OSMI bands was the lowest, whereas that between the field chlorophyll a and nLw 555 nm in the bands was the highest. Reciprocal action between the field chlorophyll a and the band ratio of the OSMI bands (nLw410/nLw555, nLw443/nLw555, nLw490/nLw555) was also studied. Correlation between the chlorophyll a and the band ratio (nLw490/nLw555) was highest in the OSMI bands. Relationship between the chlorophyll a and the ratio (nLw443/nLw555) was higher than one in the nLw410/nLw555. The difference in the estimated chlorophyll α (mg/m3) between OSMI and SeaWiFS (Sea Viewing Wide Field-of-View Sensor) at the special observing stations in the northern eastern sea of Jeju Island in february 25, 2002 was about less than 0.3 mg/m3 within 3 hours. It is suggested that OC2 (ocean color chlorophyll 2 algorithm) be used to get much better estimation of chlorophyll α from OSMI than the ones from the updated algorithms as OC4.
In order to investigate the effect of inflow of Yangze river on the distribution of chlorophyll-${\alpha}$, the results of serial oceanographic observation during 2000-2005 were used. The oceanographic conditions in the northern East China Sea is influenced by the Tsushima Warm Current and low saline water derived from the Yangze river. The distributions of these water masses vary significantly by the season in the northern East China Sea. The sea surface temperature and salinity were stable and concentrations of chlorophyll-${\alpha}$ were low in the eastern part of $126^{\circ}E$. On the contrary, the salinity was significantly influenced by the low saline water derived from Yangze river with the high concentrations of chlorophyll-${\alpha}$. It is suggested that the low saline water inflowed from the Yangze river affects high concentrations of chlorophyll-${\alpha}$ in the northern East China Sea in summer.
Photosynthetic parameters of Scendesmus quadricauda, such as the maximum photosynthetic rate ($P_{max}$), photosynthetic efficiency (α) and the initial saturation intensity of irradiance for photosynthesis ($I_K$) were obtained using photosynthesis-irradiance (P-I) curve in a phosphorus-limited chemostat. S. quadricauda exhibitied no photoinhibition until at 200 μmol·$m^{-2}$ . $P_{max}$ (r=0.963, P=0.002) and $I_K$(r=0.904, P=0.013) showed linear relationships with growth rate. Chlorophyll-α concentration and cell dry weight decreased at higher growth rates, ut chlorophyll-α content per cell dry weight increased. The increase in photosynthetic rates at higher growth rates was due to the increase of $P_{max}$ and $I_K$ which was caused mainly by the increase in the absolute amount of chlorophyll-α rather than the increased photosynthetic efficiency of individual chlorphyll-α. The α did not show a significant relationship with growth rate (r=0.714, P=0.111). The cell quota of carbon (r=0.554, P=0.254) was not correlated with growth rate, but cell quota of nitrogen (r=0.818, P=0.047) and phosphorus (r=0.855, P=0.030) exhibited linear correlations with growth rate.

By analyzing the sea surface temperature (SST), chlorophyll ${\alpha}$, zooplankton and Orview/SeaWiFS satellite data in the Korean Waters from 1999 to 2001, we studied the seasonal and annual variation of chlorophyll ${\alpha}$ concentration and zooplankton biomass. Sea surface temperature was fluctuated with the typical seasonal variation in the waters of temperate zone. Chlorophyll ${\alpha}$ concentration and zooplankton biomass were high in spring and autumn. Year to year fluctuations on annual averaged chlorophyll ${\alpha}$ concentrations in Korean Waters in the spring from 1999 to 2001 were decreased continuously. On the other hand, the estimated chlorophyll ${\alpha}$ concentrations derived from SeaWiFS ocean color data were lower than the measured sea surface chlorophyll a in the Korean Waters.
This study is done to prove the premise that both alkalinity and hardness affect on the dissolved phosphorus concentration so that the growth of algae is also affected in water bodies like rivers and lakes. Statistical analysis of the water quality data of 13 reservoirs collected for the last decade shows the relations between alkalinity and chlorophyll-${\alpha}$ and between hardness and chlorophyll-${\alpha}$ are not linear but follow second order equation. This relation seems to be due to two antagonistic effects accompanying a simultaneous increase in alkalinity and hardness. The increase stimulates the growth of algae by supplying carbonates and $Ca^{2+}$ to algae and at same time it causes a decrease in soluble phosphorus which retards algae to grow. These opposing tendencies are confirmed by theoretical calculations with the MINTEQ model. There seems to be ranges of alkalinity and hardness that are in favor of algae growth; the ranges are less than 44 mg/L as $CaCO_3$ in alkalinity and also less than 63 mg/L as $CaCO_3$ in hardness. This finding will provide a solid base to develop an effective water quality management of water bodies.

Influences of vrious environmental factors on the eutrophication of Nakdong River were analyzed statistically using water samples collected from 1 January, 1999, to 30 September, 2001 at Namji area. The relationships between the concentration of chlorophyll α (eutrophication index) and environmental factors and were analyzed to develop a statistical model which can predict the status of eutrophication. The concentation of chlorophyll α ranged from 66.2 mg · $m^{-3}$ to 70.8 mg · $m^{-3}$ during dry winter season and the average concentration during this study period was 35.5 mg · $m^{-3}$ Namji area of Nakdong River was in the hypereutrohic stage in terms of water quality. Stephanodiscus sp. and Aulacoseria granulata var. angustissima were dominant species during the witnter to spring time and summer to autumn period, respectively. Based on the correlation analysis and the analysis of variance between chlorophyll α concentration and environmental factors, significantly high positive relationships were found in the order of BOD> pH> COD > KMnO₄ consumption > DO > conductivity > alkalinity. In contrast to these factors, significantly negrative relationships were found as in the order of $PO₄^{3-}-P$ >water level>the rate of Namgang-dam discharge > NH₃-N> the rate of Andong-dam discharge> the rate of Hapchoen-dam discharge. Based on the factors analysis of environmental factors on the concentration of chlorophyll α, we obtained five factors as follows. The first factor included water level, pH, turbiditiy, conductivity, alkalinity and the rate of Namgang-dam discharge. The second factor included water temperature DO, NH₄+-N, NO₃- -N. The third factor included KMnO₄ consumption COD and BOD. The fourth factor included the rate of Andong-dam discharge, the rate of Hapcheon-dam discharge, and the rate of Imha-dam discharge. The final factor included T-N T-P and $PO₄^{3-}-P$ > concentration. We derived two statistica models that can predict the occurrence of eutrophication based on the factors by factor analysis, using regression analysis. The first model is the stepwise regression model whose independent variables are the factors produced by factor analysis : chl α (mg · $m^{-3}$ = 42.923+(18.637 factor 3) + (-17.147 factor 1) + (-12.095 factor 5) + (-4.828 factor 4). The second model is the alternative stepwise regression model whose independent variables are the sums of the standardized main component variables:chl α (mg · $m^{-3}$ = 37.295+(7.326 Zfactor 3) + (-2.704 Zfactor 1)+(-2.341 Zfactor 5).
Time series changes in the chlorophyll $\alpha$ concentrations before and after the ship Prestige oil spill on 13 November 2002 were analyzed using NCEP wind data and ocean color data. Following the oil spill, southwesterly winds pushed the oil towards the Spanish coast. In addition, the daily chlorophyll $\alpha$ concentration decreased dramatically from the middle of November to the end of December 2002, with the minimum value being recorded in December. Additionally, the mean chlorophyll $\alpha$ concentration in November and December 2002 was lower than the average value recorded for the same months from 2000 to 2005; however, with the exception of 2000, the concentration was higher in October 2002 before the spill and in January-March 2003 after the spill during the same period from 2000 to 2005.
This study analyzes characteristics of phytoplankton communities around Wolseong nuclear power plant by selecting 16 stations from July 2006 to June 2007 and understands the influences on standing crops and chlorophyll a of phytoplankton by passing through the cooling water system. The total species number is 283, among which diatoms is 208 occupying 73.5% of total taxa. The mean of total standing crops is 469,380-3,704,114 cells L-1. It is the highest in April 2007 because blooming of Chaetoceros socialis occurs during this period. The mean standing crops of microplankton and nanoplankton are average 129,666-3,392,640 cells L-1 and 240,943-650,505 cells L-1 respectively, which occupy 54.01% and 46.54% of total standing crops. The mean concentrations of total chlorophyll a is 0.64-5.39 μg L-1. The mean concentrations of chlorophyll a of microplankton, nanoplankton and picoplankton are 1.33 μg L-1, 0.21 μg L-1 and 0.49 μg L-1 respectively. Dominant species around Wolseong neclear power plant during this study are Chaetoceros debilis, Chaetoceros socialis, Leptocylindrus danicus, Pseudo-nitzschia fraudulenta, P. subfraudulenta and Thalassiosira decipiens. Fluctuation rates of standing crops and chlorophyll a concentrations of phytoplankton passing through the cooling water system are 22.80% and 50.48% respectively. Decrease of standing crops and chlorophyll a concentrations of phytoplankton means that community structure of phytoplnakton may change at the discharge areas.
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic disease with an increasing incidence globally; therefore, there is a growing demand for natural compounds effective in treating dermatitis. In this study, the protective effects of Lycium barbarum leaves with and without chlorophyll (LLE and LLE[Ch-]) on AD were investigated in animal models of AD and HaCaT cells. Further, we investigated whether LLE and LLE(Ch-) show any differences in physiological activity. MATERIALS/METHODS: AD was induced by 2,4-dinitrochlorobenzene (DNCB) for three weeks, while NC/Nga mice were fed LLE or LLE(Ch-) extracts for 7 weeks. Serum immunoglobulin E (IgE) and cytokine (tumor necrosis factor [TNF]-α, interleukin [IL]-6, and IL-4) concentrations and the degree of DNA fragmentation in lymphocytes were examined. A histopathological examination (haematoxylin & eosin staining and blue spots of toluidine) of the dorsal skin of mice was performed. To elucidate the mechanism of action, the expression of the thymus and activation-regulated chemokine (TARC) and macrophage-derived chemokine (MDC) were measured in HaCaT cells. RESULTS: Serum IgE and cytokines (TNF-α and IL-6) levels as well as DNA fragmentation of lymphocytes were significantly decreased in AD-induced mice treated with LLE or LLE(Ch-) compared to those of the control group. The epidermal thickness of the dorsal skin and mast cell infiltration in the LLE group significantly reduced compared to that in the control group. The LLE extracts showed no cytotoxicity up to 1,000 ㎍/mL in HaCaT cells. LLE or LLE(Ch-)-treated group showed a reduction of TARC and MDC in TNF-α-and IFN-γ-stimulated HaCaT cells. CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that LLE potentially improves inflammation by reducing the expression of chemokines that inhibit T helper 2 cell migration. LLE(Ch-) showed similar effects to LLE on blood levels of IgE, TNF-α and IL-6 and protein expression in HaCat cells, but the ultimate effect of skin improvement was not statistically significant. Therefore, both LLE and LLE(Ch-) can be used as functional materials to alleviate AD, but LLE(Ch-) appears to require more research to improve inflammation.
Characteristics of speckle errors of Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor (SeaWiFS) chlorophyll-${\alpha}$ concentration were analyzed, and its causes were investigated by using SeaWiFS data in the East Sea from September 1997 to December 2007. The speckles with anomalously high concentrations were randomly distributed and showed remarkably high bias of greater than $10mg/m^3$, compared with their neighboring pixels. The speckles tended to appear frequently in winter, which might be related to cloud distribution. Ten-year averaged cloudiness of winter was much higher over the southeastern part, with frequent speckles, than the northwestern part of the East Sea. Statistical analysis results showed that the number of the speckles was increased as cloudiness increased. Normalized water-leaving radiance of the speckle pixel was considerably low at the short wavelengths (443, 490, and 510 nm), whereas the radiance at 555 nm band was normal. These low measurements produced extraordinarily high concentration from the chlorophyll-${\alpha}$ estimation formula. This study presented the speckle errors of SeaWiFS chlorophyll-${\alpha}$ concentration in the East Sea and suggested that more reliable chlorophyll-${\alpha}$ data based on appropriate ocean color remote sensing techniques should be used for the oceanic application researches.
