  • Langelier Index (LI) is used as a tap water corrosiveness index. Residual chlorine in tap water induces corrosion inside water pipes. This study takes a deeper look into the effect of residual chlorine in water pipes. Comparison between tap waters of Y and K water treatment plant (WTP) shows that the LI index of K WTP is lower than that of Y. However, the corrosion rate of Y WTP is higher than that of K WTP. This means that the higher the concentration of residual chlorine in tap water, the higher the corrosion rate of pipe materials. When calcium hydroxide was added to tap water, the corrosiveness index was improved and thus the corrosion rate reduced. It is possible to increase the disinfection efficiency by increasing the duration of residual chlorine and suppressing the rust generation of water pipes and to supply minerals. A guideline for corrosion control with residual chlorine should be set up. The effects of residual chlorine should be included in the corrosiveness index of tap water.

  • This study was conducted to evaluate the chlorinated disinfection by-products formation potential (DBPFP) produced from the cell and extracellular product (ECP) of Chlamydomonas pulsatilla after chlorination. Reaction yields of DBPs produced by C. pulsatilla of ECP and the cell were $0.007{\mu}mol/mg{\cdot}C$ and $0.808{\mu}mol/mg{\cdot}C$ respectively, Also, SUVA values of ECP and the cell were measured as $0.313L/mg{\cdot}m$ and $1.052L/mg{\cdot}m$ respectively, The DOC of cell was found to be lower than that of ECP, while the SUVA value and reaction yields for the cell were higher than those of ECP. For ECP, most of the DBPFP was composed of trihalomethanes (THM; 47.3%) and haloacetonitriles (HAN; 38,83%). THM and HAN were the major DBPFP produced by the cell. Chloroform was found to be the major THM compound; 98.3% for ECP and 99.98% for the cell. Dichloroacetic acid (DCAA) and dichloroacetonitrile (DCAN) were identified as the major haloacetic acid (HAA) and HAN compounds formed by ECP and the cell as a precursor, respectively. As the chlorine dose was increased, concentrations of DOC, THMs, and HANs were increased. However, the chlorine dose decreased the concentration of chlorophyll-a.

  • The purpose of this study is to compare CT (disinfectant concentration * time) values in removing the antibiotic resistance bacteria, antibiotic resistance gene and transfer of antibiotic resistance genes. Different concentration of chlorine(C) and contact time(T) according to the removal of antibiotic resistance was calculated for each. As a result, for the 90% removal of antibiotic resistant bacteria, around 176~353 mg min/L CT values are needed. For the removal of the antibiotic resistance gene, 195~372 mg min/L CT values are required. For the 90% reduction of antibiotic resistance gene transfer by chlorine disinfection, 187~489 mg min/L CT values are needed. Based on our results, higher CT value was required for removing antibiotic resistant genes rather than antibiotic resistance bacteria.

  • Seeds of wheat (Triticum aestivum L. cv. Olgeurumil) were infected with Penicillium sp. at mean infection rate of 83%. Penicillium sp. was detected in endosperm with bran but not in embryo. Gaseous chlorine dioxide ($ClO_2$) effectively inhibited growth of Penicillium sp. at concentration of 5 to $20{\mu}g/ml$. As treatment duration was extended from 1 to 3 h, growth of Penicillium sp. was completely suppressed even at $10{\mu}g/ml$. There was no significant reduction in the incidence of Penicillium sp. at 30% relative humidity (RH). However, the incidence of Penicillium sp. was 27.7% at 50% RH, further those were 3.5% and 0.2% at 70% and 80% RH, respectively. Seed germination was not affected by $ClO_2$ treatment at all the RH conditions. Water-soaked seeds (30% seed moisture content) showed a drastic reduction in the incidence of Penicillium sp. when treated at more than $10{\mu}g/ml$ of $ClO_2$. The incidences of Penicillium sp. were 3.3, 1.8 and 1.2% at 10, 15 and $20{\mu}g/ml$, respectively. The incidence of Penicillium sp. in dry seeds with 9.7% seed moisture content did not reduce when treated with 5 and $10{\mu}g/ml$ at 50% RH although it tended to decrease as $ClO_2$ concentration increased to $20{\mu}g/ml$. Seed germination was not affected by $ClO_2$ treatment at the tested concentrations. These results indicated that gaseous $ClO_2$ was effective disinfectant to wheat seeds infected with Penicillium sp. and that the effectiveness of $ClO_2$ strongly increased when moisture content around or inside of the seed was increased.

  • This study was carried to investigate the characteristics of chloramination as a disinfection in drinking water distribution system. The raw water comes from midstream of Han river. In the range of pH 6~8, preformed chloramine of $Cl_2/NH_3-N$ ratio 5:1 had the HPC inactivation of more than 99% with lower pH and shorter contact time and available chloramine residual was decreased a little. In the chloramines of $Cl_2/NH_3-N$ ratio 3:1~5:1, the higher $Cl_2/NH_3-N$ ratio, the much inactivation of HPC was increased, but as contact time was longer, HPC inactivation of $Cl_2/NH_3-N$ ratio 3:1~5:1 were equaled. Bactericidal activity of three chlorine and postammoniation was influenced by free available chlorine completely and that of preammoniation was as follows : free chlorine ${\fallingdotseq}$ postammoniation>preammoniation>preformed chloramine.

  • This study investigated the characteristics of the biofilm removal by free chlorine or monochloramine. The simulated drinking water distribution pipes on which biofilms had been formed were supplied with tap water containing 0.5, 1.0, 2.0 mg/L of free chlorine or monochloramine residuals. The biofilm removal was characterized by measurement of attached HPC and biomass on pipe surfaces. Chlorine was more effective in both inactivation of attached viable heterotrophic bacteria and removal of biofilm biomass compared to monochloramine. Biofilm matrix was not much eliminated from the surfaces by monochloramine disinfection. Free chlorine residual of 2.0 mg/L was found to be effective in biomass removal. However, biofilm level as low as $10CFU/cm^2$ of attached HPC and $5{\mu}g/cm^2$ of biomass still remained on the surfaces at 2.0 mg/L of chlorine residual. The measurement of biomass appeared to be a useful means in evaluating the characteristics of biofilm removal.

  • Three species of Fusarium, F. fujikuroi, F. verticillioides and F. proliferatum, are known to be associated with bakanae disease of rice [1, 2]. F. fujikuroi infects rice flowers and survive in endosperm and embryo of the seeds. Infected seed is an important source of primary inoculum of pathogens [3]. Seeds of rice (Oryza sativa cv. Boramchan) collected from bakanae-infected field were found to be 96% infected with Fusarium sp., 52% with F. fujikuroi, 42% with F. verticillioides, and 12% with F. proliferatum as determined by incubation method and species-specific PCR assays. F. fujikuroi was detected at lemma/palea, endosperm and embryo whereas F. verticillioides and F. proliferatum were recovered only from lemma/palea by means of component plating test. Seed disinfection methods have been developed to control bakanae disease and prochloraz has been most widely used for rice seeds. Two chemicals formulated with prochloraz (PC 1) and prochloraz + hexaconazole (PC 2) that inhibit biosynthesis of ergosterol strongly reduced the incidence of Fusarium spp. on selective media to 4.7% and 2.0%, respectively. Disease symptoms of rice seedlings in nursery soil were alleviated by chemical treatment; seedlings with elongated leaves or wide angle between leaf and stem were strikingly reduced from 15.6 to 3.2% (PC 1) and 0 (PC 2), stem rots were reduced from 56.9 to 26.2% (PC 1) and 32.1% (PC 2), and normal seedling increased from 0.4 to 13.3% (PC 2). Prochloraz has some disadvantages and risks such as the occurrence of tolerant pathogens [4] and effects on the sterol synthesis in animals and humans [5]. For these reasons, it is necessary to develop new disinfection method that do not induce fungal tolerance and are safe to humans and animals. Chlorine dioxide ($ClO_2$), that is less toxic, produces no harmful byproducts, and has high oxidizing power, has been reported to be effective at disinfection of several phytopathogenic fungi including Colletotrichum spp. and Alternaria spp. [6]. Gaseous $ClO_2$ applied to rice seeds at a concentration of 20 ppm strongly suppressed mycelial growth of Fusarium fujikuroi, F. verticillioides and F. proliferatum. The incidence of Fusarium spp. in dry seed with 8.7% seed moisture content (SMC) tended to decrease as the concentration of $ClO_2$ increased from 20 to 40 ppm. Applying 40 ppm $ClO_2$ at 90% relative humidity, incidence was reduced to 5.3% and resulted in significant reduction of disease symptoms on MS media. In nursery soil, stem rot was reduced from 56.9 to 15.4% and the number of normal seedlings increased from 0.4 to 25.5%. With water-soaked seeds (33.1% SMC) holding moisture in the endosperm and embryo, the effectiveness of disinfection using $ClO_2$ increased, even when treated with only 20 ppm for four hours. This suggests that moisture was a key element for action of $ClO_2$. Removal of the palea and lemma from seeds significantly decreased the incidence of Fusarium spp. to 3.0%. Seed germination appeared to decrease slightly by water-soaking at $30^{\circ}C$ because of increased SMC and by physical damage of embryos from hulling. These results indicate that the use of gaseous $ClO_2$ was effective as a means to disinfect rice seeds infected with Fusarium spp. and that moisture around the pathogens in the seed was an important factor for the action of $ClO_2$. Further investigations should be conducted to ascertain the best conditions for complete disinfection of Fusarium spp. that infect deep site of rice seeds.

  • Recently, users' complaints on drinking water quality are increasing according to emerging interest in the drinking water service issues such as pipe aging and various water quality accidents. In the case of drinking water quality complaints, not only the water pollution but also the inconvenience on the chlorine residual for disinfection are included, thus various efforts, such as rechlorination treatment, are being attempted in order to keep the chlorine concentration supplied evenly. In this research, for a more accurate water quality simulation of water distribution network, the water quality reaction coefficients were estimated, and an optimization method of chlorination/ rechlorination scheduling was proposed consideirng satisfaction of water quality standards and chlorine residual equalization. The proposed method was applied to a large-scale real water network, and various chlorination schemes were comparatively analyzed through the grid search algorithm and optimized based on the suitability and uniformity of supplied chlorine residual concentration.

  • Sodium hypochlorite, used as water disinfectant, is generated by electrolysis of salt. Compared to chlorine gas disinfection, it is free from high-pressure gas regulation and does not generate toxic gas, so it is increasingly used as a safe disinfectant. Despite these advantages, the concentration of sodium hypochlorite decreases with temperature during long-term storage, and the amount of chlorate increases when a large amount is added, it has mainly been applied to small-scale waterworks. To solve this problem, high sodium hypochlorite generation was developed. In this study, the changes of concentration and chlorate of sodium hypochlorite with time has been studied. As a result of the test, it was found that the usable period of sodium hypochlorite produced at a certain temperature or less was increased from 1.5 days to 13 days. Overall, sodium hypochlorite can be applied even in large-scale waterworks, which makes operation more stable and also reduces the disinfection byproducts, thus it contributed greatly to securing water quality.

  • This paper summarizes results of research on the electrochemical (EC) degradation of disinfection by-products (DBPs) and iodine-containing contrast media (ICMs), with the focus on EC reductive dehalogenation. The efficiency of EC dehalogenation of DBPs increases with the number of halogen atoms in an individual DBP species. EC reductive cleavage of bromine from parent DBPs is faster than that of chlorine. EC data and quantum chemical modeling indicate that the EC reduction of iodine-containing DBPs (I-DBPs) is characterized by the formation of active iodine that reacts with the organic substrate. The occurrence of ICMs has attracted attention due to their association with the generation of I-DBPs. Indirect EC oxidation of ICMs using anodes that produce reactive oxygen species can result in a complete degradation of these compounds yet I-DBPs are formed in the process. Reductive EC deiodination of ICMs is rapid and its overall rate is diffusion-controlled yet I-DBPs are also produced in this reaction. Further progress in practically feasible EC methods to remove DBPs, ICMs and other trace-level organic contaminants requires the development of novel electrocatalytic materials, elimination of mass transfer limitations via innovative design of 3D electrodes and EC reactors, and further progress in the understanding of intrinsic mechanisms of EC reactions of DBPs and TrOC at EC interfaces.
