Humic substances generally comprise 30-50% of the dissolved organic carbon in water. They can affect water quality adversely in several ways and they are important from a water treatment perspective due to their role as precursors for the formation of chlorination by-products such as trihalomethanes. The objectives of this research are to investigate the characteristics of organic matter using raw water of Chuncheon area, to isolate the humic substance fractions from natural water samples, and characterize the extracted humic substances. Humic substances were fractionated according to "isolation of IHSS aquatic humic and fulvic acids" using XAD resin adsorption technique. Characteristics of humic substances were analyzed through DOC, $UV_{254}$, $SUVA_{254}$, FT-IR spectra, fluorescence analysis.
This study was conducted to evaluate the chlorinated disinfection by-products formation potential (DBPFP) produced from the cell and extracellular product (ECP) of Chlamydomonas pulsatilla after chlorination. Reaction yields of DBPs produced by C. pulsatilla of ECP and the cell were $0.007{\mu}mol/mg{\cdot}C$ and $0.808{\mu}mol/mg{\cdot}C$ respectively, Also, SUVA values of ECP and the cell were measured as $0.313L/mg{\cdot}m$ and $1.052L/mg{\cdot}m$ respectively, The DOC of cell was found to be lower than that of ECP, while the SUVA value and reaction yields for the cell were higher than those of ECP. For ECP, most of the DBPFP was composed of trihalomethanes (THM; 47.3%) and haloacetonitriles (HAN; 38,83%). THM and HAN were the major DBPFP produced by the cell. Chloroform was found to be the major THM compound; 98.3% for ECP and 99.98% for the cell. Dichloroacetic acid (DCAA) and dichloroacetonitrile (DCAN) were identified as the major haloacetic acid (HAA) and HAN compounds formed by ECP and the cell as a precursor, respectively. As the chlorine dose was increased, concentrations of DOC, THMs, and HANs were increased. However, the chlorine dose decreased the concentration of chlorophyll-a.
수온변화에 따른 THM 생성특성 조사에서 수온이 낮은 $4^{\circ}C$일 때는 PF(parabolic formation) phase로 접어들어서도 THM 생성량이 계속적으로 증가하는 양상을 나타내었으며, $20^{\circ}C$와 $35^{\circ}C$의 경우에는 IF(instantaneous formation) phase까지 급격한 증가추세를 보인 후 PF phase에 도달하여서는 그 증가추세가 둔화되는 것으로 나타났다. pH 변화에 따른 THM 생성특성 조사에서 pH가 5일 경우 IF phase까지 증가추세를 보인 후, PF phase로 접어들어서도 계속적으로 증가하는 것으로 나타났지만 pH가 7과 pH가 9의 경우에는 IF phase까지 급격한 증가추세를 보인 후 PF phase에 도달하여서는 그 증가 경향이 아주 둔화되는 것을 볼 수 있으며, 이런 현상은 pH가 9일 경우에는 더욱 두드러지게 나타났다.
While a range of natural organic matter (NOM) types can generate high levels of disinfection by-products (DBPs) after chlorination, there is little understanding of which specific compounds act as precursors. Use of eight model compounds allows linking of explicit properties to treatability and DBP formation potential (DBPFP). The removal of model compounds by various treatment processes and their haloacetic acid formation potential (HAAFP) before and after treatment were recorded. The model compounds comprised a range of hydrophobic (HPO) and hydrophilic (HPI) neutral and anionic compounds. On the treatment processes, an ozone oxidation process was moderate for control of model compounds, while the HPO-neutral compound was most treatable with activated carbon process. Biodegradation was successful in removing amino acids, while coagulation and ion exchange process had little effect on neutral molecules. Although compared with the HPO compounds the HPI compounds had low HAAFP the ozone oxidation and biodegradation were capable of increasing their HAAFP. In situations where neutral or HPI molecules have high DBPFP additional treatments may be required to remove recalcitrant NOM and control DBPs.
This study attempts to draw factors for an analysis of the operation effect of a rechlorination facility and autodrain equipment for residual chlorine equalization by installing and operating a rechlorination facility and autodrain equipment in P City and analyzing the practical evaluation method and operation effect. For this purpose, this study selected three indicators for an analysis of the effectiveness of residual chlorine equalization and conducted a comparative analysis before and after the implementation of the residual chlorine equalization. As a result of estimation, (1) the reduction of the residual chlorine concentration range from a water treatment plant to the pipe end was 16.0%; (2) the total reduction of chlorination input was 18.0%; and (3) the reduction of the generation of disinfection by-products was 19.5%. In addition, this achieved enough residual chlorine equalization in the supply process and shows that it could successfully achieve the economic feasibility of investment in equipment and the reduction of the generation of disinfection by-products. Like this, it is judged that the three indicators suggested in this study will be used sufficiently as indicators of an analysis of the effectiveness of residual chlorine equalization according to the operations of the rechlorination facility and autodrain equipment.
Recently, the interest in NDMA(N-nitrosodimethylamine) has increased due to its recognition as a pollutant by Ontario Ministry of Environment and Energy and California Department of Health Sciences. It is, in fact, one of the DBPs(Disinfection By-products) which appears due to chlorination and is reported to be fatal if exposed continuously to human body. Due to uncertainty in mechanism to remove it, its treatment is not yet carried out. In this experiment, treatment of biological NDMA is carried out by letting it adsorbed on Granular Sludge and then filtering the medium through MF(Microfiltration) and UF(Ultrafiltration) membranes. Granular Sludge is adapted to aerobic and anaerobic conditions for 7 days and the experimental conditions are MLSS of 8000mg/L, COD of 250mg/L, TN of 12.5mg/L, and TP of 2.5mg/L. Several batch tests were carried out and samples were collected with the interval of 1 hour. Samples were measured by LSC(Liquid scintillation counter) after filtering by MF and UF. In batch test with granular sludge the permeate concentrations(removal efficiencies) of NDMA by MF and UF were 71.7ng/L(32.0%) and 62.0ng/L(43.7%) at aerobic state, and 52.0ng/L(49.2%) and 47.6ng/L(58.9%) at anaerobic state, respectively. Hence, UF membrane showed about 10% more removal efficiency than MF and removal efficiency at anaerobic condition was 15% more than that at aerobic condition.
FeS/FeS$_2$ minerals have been known to be potentially useful reductant to the removal of common organic contaminants in groundwater and soil. This research is aimed at improving our understanding of factors affecting the pathways and rates of reductive transformation of Hexachloroethane by catalytical iron minerals in natural system. Hexachloroethane is reduced by FeS/FeS$_2$ minerals under anaerobic condition to tetrachloroethylene and trichloroethylene with pentachloroethyl radical as the intermediate products. The kinetics of reductive transformations of the Hexachloroethane have been investigated in aqueous solution containing FeS, FeS$_2$. The proposed reduction mechanism for the adsorbed nitrobenzene involves the electron donor-acceptor complex as a precursor to electron transfer. The adsorbed Hexachloroethane undergo a series of electron transfer, proton transfer and dehydration to achieve complete reduction. It can be concluded that the reductive transformation reaction takes place at surface of iron-bearing minerals and is dependent on surface area and pH. Nitrobenzene reduction kinetics is affected by reductant type, surface area, pH, the surface site density, and the surface charge. FeS/FeS$_2$-mediated reductive dechlorination may be an important transformation pathway in natural systems.
Postharvest diseases cause considerable losses to harvested fruits and vegetables worldwide. Fresh produce suspected of harboring postharvest disease must be treated to control any pathogens present. Although there are various treatments to control postharvest losses by pathogens, the current community is eager to take safer and more eco-friendly alternatives to help with human health and reduce environmental risks. Ionizing irradiation is a promising phytosanitary treatment that has a significant potential to control postharvest diseases in use worldwide. Although almost 19000 metric tons of sweet potatoes and various fruits are irradiated each year in six countries to control postharvest disease, irradiation continues to be a debate, with slow acceptance by industries. Irradiation alone is not effective as a fungicide, and an over dose affects the physical properties of irradiated products. A combination of irradiation with other treatments such as heating, biocontrol agents, chlorination, and nano Ag particles is to enhance their effectiveness. Challenges to the use of phytosanitary irradiation are an avoidance of irradiated postharvest and cost of the irradiation facilities, and thus consumers still need to be educated on the principles and benefits of irradiation and prepare an optimum economy of scale for commercial use. In this review, we evaluated the current phytosanitary irradiation, and combination with various other treatments to minimize the postharvest losses.
