  • Solvent extraction experiments have been performed to separate copper from $CuCl_2$-$NiCl_2$-$CoCl_2$$ solutions using Alamine336 and LIX84. The complex formation tendency between metal ions and chloride ion had a great effect on the distribution coefficients of Cu, Co and Ni ions and separation factor of Cu to Co and Ni. In the experimental ranges of chloride ion concentration from 0.5 to 4.0 M, LIX84 was superior to Alamine336 in separating copper from cobalt. When the volume percentage of LIX84 and Alamine336 was varied from 5 to 40%, LIX84 was more effective than Alamine336 in separating Cu from Co and Ni in solutions in which the chloride ion concentration was 1.0 M.

  • Fundamental studies were carried out for an effective removal and recovery of silver from waste photo-developing solution by solvent extraction. The organic solvents examined for silver-extraction were ALIQUAT 336, D2EHPA, KELEX 100, and TBP. ALIQUAT 336, which is an anionic exchanger, was found to be efficient for the extraction of silver and the reason for this was considered to be due to the chloride ion contained in its structure. The extent of silver extraction was examined to increase with the concentration of ALIQUAT 336 until it reached 0.6 M and no more extraction was observed above this concentration. The extraction of silver by ALIQUAT 336 was found to reach its pseudo-equilibrium within a few minutes after the reaction started and additional slight increase in silver extraction was observed until 30 minutes of reaction time. The observed differences in silver extraction for artificial and actual waste solutions were considered to be based upon the different ionic form of silver-containing species in these solutions.

  • Increasing water consumption produced sludge problems of the water treatment plants. The objective of this study is to investigate aluminium coagulants recovery n acidic and alkaline conditions. Water treatment plant sludge produced in Pusan Metropolitan City were tested for the aluminium extraction process. Experiment samples were obtained in summer from water treatment plants of Deoksan and Myongjang. Aluminium coagulants used in these plants during the test period were polyaluminium chloride(PAC), polyaluminium sulfate organic(PSO), polyaluminium sulfate silicate(PASS). Aluminium contents of water treatment sludge were in the range of 7.2~10.9% of the total solids. The recovery percentages for aluminium and iron by acidic extraction method was evaluated to 88% and 42% respectively. Extracted mass variation for other materials such as iron, manganese, total organic carbon was observed during the extraction operation. Alkaline extraction produced more than two times amount of total organic carbon than that in the acidic extraction process.

  • Predispersed solvent extraction (PDSE) of succinic acid with Tri-n-octylamine (TOA) dissolved in 1-octanol from aqueous solutions of 50 g/L succinic acid was examined. It was found that the equilibrium data in PDSE was equal to that in conventional solvent extraction in spite of the lack of mechanical mixing in PDSE. The influence of salts on succinic acid extraction and the stability of colloidal liquid aphrons (CLAs) were also investigated. Results indicated that in the presence of sodium chloride, less succinic acid was extracted by CLAs and the stability of CLAs decreased. However, the stability of CLAs was sufficient to make PDSE practically applicable to real fermentation broth, considering the concentration range of salts in the fermentation process for succinic acid.

  • A simultaneous determination method of BTEX (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, o,m.p-xylene) and TPH (kerosene, diesel, jet fuel and bunker C) in soil with gas chromatography/flame ionization detection (GC-FID) was described. The effects of extracti on method, extraction solvent, solvent volume and extraction time on the extraction performance were studied. A sonication method was simpler and more efficient than Soxhlet or shaking methods. Sonication with 10 mL of acetone/methylene chloride (1 : 1, v/v) for 10 min was found to be optimal extraction conditions for 20 g of soil. Peak shapes and quantification of BTEX and TPH were excellent, with linear calibration curves over a wide range of 1-500 mg/L for BTEX and 10-5000 mg/L for TPH. Good reproducibilities by sonication were obtained, with the RSD values below 10%. By using about 20 g of soil, detection limits were 0.8 mg/L for BTEX and 10 mg/L for TPH. The advantages of this procedure are the use of simple and common equipment, reduced volumes of organic solvents, rapid extraction periods of less than 20 min, and simultaneous analysis of volatile and semivolatile compounds.

  • Solvent extraction experiments have been performed to separate Nd and Pr from chloride leaching solution of monazite sand using PC88A and D2EHPA. For this purpose, the effect of the saponification of PC88A and D2EHPA on the extraction and separation of the two metals were studied by varying the pH of aqueous solution. In the experimental ranges conducted in this study, the distribution coefficients of Nd were higher than those of Pr and separation factor value increased with the increase of solution pH. Saponification of PC88A enhanced the distribution coefficients of Nd and Pr as well as the separation factor. Saponification of D2EHPA had some effect on the extraction of the two metals but little effect on the separation factor.

  • For the purpose of development of the extraction process of lithium ion from concentrated water eliminated from desalination process, an experimental research on the solvent extraction of lithium ion from aqueous solutions was performed. The effects of operating parameters, such as concentration of extractant, ratio of extracting solution/aqueous solution, pH of aqueous solution, were examined. The effect of sodium chloride, the major component of sea water, was also examined. Lithium ion in aqueous solutions of pH=10.2~10.6 adjusted by ammonia solution was most effectively extracted by extracting solution composed of 0.02 M TTA and 0.04 M TOPO in kerosine. The addition of sodium chloride in lithium aqueous solution significantly interfered the extraction of lithium ion.

  • The extraction behavior of Mo(VI) and W(VI) from dilute chloride solution was investigated by employing amine (Alamine308 and TEHA) and neutral extractants (TOP) in the solution pH range from 2 to 9. W (VI) was selectively extracted over Mo(VI) by these three extractants and TEHA led to the highest separation factor. Without the pretreatment protonation of the tertiary amines, the extraction percentage of the two metal ions decreased steadily to zero as solution pH increased to 9. The extraction behavior of the metals was discussed on the basis of the distribution diagram of each metal. Alamine 308 and TEHA were much better than TOP in extracting and separating the two metal ions.

  • After solvent extraction of 28 domestic cultivated medicinal plants using methylene chloride, 1000ppm of extracts were added to linoleic acid to compare antioxidative activities. Although their magnitude was somewhat different, all extracts showed the antioxidative activities. Antioxidative activity of Scutellariae baicalensis extract was similar to that of BHA. Antioxidative activity of Paeonia moutan and Liriope platyphylla extracts was lower than that of Scutellariae baicalensis. When Scutellariae baicalensis was extracted with 9 solvents which have a different polarity, the extraction yield and antioxidative activity generally increased with increasing polarity. The nitrite-scavenging effects, electron donating abilities(EDA) and anti-complementary activities were determined.
