  • The service life evaluation in RC(Reinforced Concrete) structure exposed to chloride attack can be classified into deterministic and probabilistic method, and it significantly varies with design parameters. The present work derives PDF (Probability of Durability Failure) and the related service life considering time-dependent diffusion coefficient and internal parameters such as reference diffusion coefficient, critical chloride content, and time-exponent. When critical chloride content increases to 133.3%, the changing ratios of service life are 134.0~145.4% for deterministic method and 149.2%~152.5% for probabilistic method, respectively. In the case of increasing time-exponent to 200%, they increase to 323.8% for deterministic method and 346.0% for probabilistic method. Through adopting time-diffusion coefficient for probabilistic method, reasonable service life evaluation can be achieved, and it is also verified that increasing time-exponent through mineral admixture is very effective to extension of service life in RC structure.

  • In order to predict the remaining life of marine concrete structures under climatic loads, it is necessary to develop an analytical approach to predict the time and space dependent deterioration of concrete structures due to mainly chloride attack up to corrosion initiation and additional deterioration like cracking of cover concrete. This study aims to introduce FEM model for life-time simulation of concrete structures subjected to chloride attack. In order to consider uncertainties in materials as well as environmental parameters for the prediction, Monte Carlo Simulation is integrated in that FEM modeling for reliability-based remaining service life prediction. The paper is organized as follows: firstly general scheme for reliability-based remaining service life of concrete structures is introduced, then the FEM models for chloride penetration, corrosion product expansion and cover cracking are briefly explained, finally an example is demonstrated and the effects of localization of chloride concentration and corrosion product expansion on service life using above model are discussed.

  • RC (Reinforced Concrete) structures are considered as cost-benefit and durable however performances of structural safety and durability are degraded due to steel corrosion. Service life in RC structure is differently evaluated due to different local environmental conditions even if it is exposed to the same chloride attack. In the paper, 25 concrete cores from field investigation are obtained from 4 RC columns with duration of 3.5~4.5 years exposed to sea water. Through total chloride content measurement, surface chloride contents and apparent diffusion coefficients are evaluated. Service life of the target structure is estimated through deterministic method based on Fick's $2^{nd}$ Law and probabilistic method based on durability failure probability, respectively. Probability method is evaluated to be more conservative and relatively decreased service life is evaluated in tidal zone and splash zone over 40.0 m. Chloride penetration behavior with coring location from sea level and the present limitations of durability design method are investigated in the paper.

  • Recently, in order to reduce a damage of chloride attack and hydration heat in marine concrete structures, blended cement in mixing the marine concrete is widely used. Long term strength development is distinct in concrete with blended cement and it also has excellent resistance to chloride attack and reduction of hydration heat. However, blended cement has a characteristic of relatively low compressive strength in early age of 28 days. On the other hand, a high level of compressive strength is required in the Standard Specification for marine concrete mix design. Such concrete mix design satisfying Standard Specification is effective to chloride attack but disadvantageous for hydration heat reduction due to large quantity of binder. In this study, the material properties of marine concrete considering water-binder ratio and binder type are experimentally investigated. Through the research results, compressive strength in blended cement at the age of 56 days is similar although it has smaller compressive strength at the age of 28 days compared with result of OPC (ordinary portland cement). Even though blended cement has a large water-binder ratio and small unit of binder content, chloride ion diffusion coefficient is still small and hydration heat is also found to be reduced. For meeting the required compressive strength in Standard Specification for marine concrete at 28 days, the increased unit content of binder is needed but the increased hydration heat is also expected.

  • Metakaolin is a cementitious material for producing high-strength concrete. This material is now used as substitute for silica-fume. In this paper, we did the mechanical and durability test such as compressive/tensile/flexural strength test, chloride ion diffusion, chemical attack and repeated freezing and thawing, carbonation test. In the mechanical tests, 10~15% for binder is optimum substitute rate. And, in the chloride ion diffusion test, according to the increase of substitute of metakaolin & silica-fume for binder, the diffusion coefficient was more reduced. In the chemical attack test, by the filler effect of fine powder such metakaolin and silica-fume, the resistance is more excellent than normal concrete. In the other durability test, the concrete using metakaolin also compared with those of silica-fume substitute concrete. Through these tests, we recognized that metakaolin can be used as a substitute for silica-fume.

  • In this article, we would like to investigate a durability characterization of cement mortar with inert filler, which is ground calcium carbonate(GCC). The kinds of techniques to evaluate cement mortar are chloride ion ingress, carbonation and sulfate attack. For the experimental result of the resistance of chloride ion ingress, carbonation and sulfate attack, as the addition of GCC makes decreasing the permeability by micro-filler effect, the specimens of $5{\sim}15%$ ratio of replacement are superior to the GCC0 mortar specimen with respect to durability of cement matrix in this scope.

  • The RC buildings which are constructed on the seaside are followed by KBC(2016) to achieve the minimization of durability damage. To control the corrosion of the reinforcing steel bar by salt attack, W/C should be under 0.4 and specified concrete strength is higher than 35MPa in the concrete/building construction standard specification. Even though it has been proved that the concrete mixed with mineral admixture such as blast furnace slag and fly ash etc. have high strength and durability in previous researches, the beneficial informations are not applied to the codes. Ready-mixed concretes which usually include the admixtures in Busan were tested to certify the salt attack durability. In the same specified concrete strength, remarkable salt attack durability was evaluated in comparison to OPC. For economical and reliable durability design, chloride ion diffusivity should be measured before applying to new building construction.

  • The service life in RC (Reinforced Concrete) is very important and it is usually obtained through deterministic method based on Fick's 2nd law and probabilistic method. This paper presents an evaluation of $P_{df}$(durability failure probability) and the related service life considering time-dependent behaviors in chloride diffusion and surface chloride content. For the work, field investigation is performed for RC structures exposed to chloride attack for 3.5~4.5years, focusing tidal zone (6.0 m) and sea shore (9.0 m), respectively. Random variables like cover depth, chloride diffusion coefficient, and surface chloride content are obtained, and $P_{df}$ and the service life are evaluated. Unlike the results from deterministic method using LIFE 365, probabilistic method with time effects on diffusion and surface chloride shows a relatively rapid change in the result, which is a significant reductions of service life in the case with low surface chloride content. For probabilistic evaluation of durability, high surface chloride content over $10.0kg/m^3$ is required and reasonable service life can be derived with consideration of time-dependent diffusion coefficient.
