Microbial organisms including yeast, Acinetobacter sp. AG-3, Chlorococcum sp., Chlorella sp. and some of their combinations were tested to evaluate growth efficiency of Tigriopus japonicus. Body length and weight of the copepoda were measured during four days experiment. Acinetobacter sp. AG-3, dried yeast(produced Wago), Chlorella sp., Chlorococcum sp. and mixed culture were used as food sources. Yeast(Y.) was the most effective food for the growth during nauplius stage and efficiencies of bacteria(Bact.)+chlorococcum sp.(RA), Chlorococcum sp.(RA), Bact.+chlorella sp.(Ch.), Bact. and Ch. decreased in odor, while for the growth of copepodite and adult, Bact.+RA was the most effective food with decreased efficiency of Y., RA, Bact. + Ch., Bact., Ch. in order. The ratio of weight gain to the food uptaken, after the weight and food units were converted to carbon, was between 21.6 and $68.7\%$, This result suggests that some kinds of bacteria, algae and mixed cultural microorganisms could be good food sources for the growth of copepoda.
A series of experiments have been made on the mass culture of Phaeodactylum tricornutum, Platymonas sp. and Chlorella sp. in the laboratory. The shortest lag phase was found In the culture of Ph. tricornutum followed by Platymonas sp. and Chlorella sp. As compared to the aeration culture, the stagnant culture, in general, showed long duration of the lag phase, short period of the exponential phase and extremely small daily increment. The relative growth constants of Ph. tricornutum, Chlorella sp. and Platymonas sp. were $0.302{\pm}0.028$, $0.226{\pm}0.013$, and $0.151{\pm}0.008$, respectively The maximum daily increment of the three species and then daily ages are as follows: Ph. tricornutum Maximum daily increment : 47.5, Daily age : 10, Platymonas sp. Maximum daily increment : 5.6, Daily age : 14, Chlorella sp. Maximum daily increment : 21.1, Daily age : 14 Comparing the packed cell volume with a certain number of cells, the largest value was found in the population of Ph. tricornutum followed by Platymenas sp. and Chlorella sp. A straight line relationship exists between the two values, and the magnitude of the relationship coincides well with the size of the cells. The culture of Ph. tricornutum was proved satisfactory for feeding the larvae of bivalves at about 12 days after innoculation and both of Platymenas sp. and Chlorella sp. were about 16 days respectively.
The effects of iron and EDTA on the growth of Chlorella sp. KR-1, a highly$CO_2$tolerant fresh water micro alga, have been determined. The algal growth was significantly affected not only by iron concentrations in the medium but by the ratio of iron to EDTA. The linear growth rate and the final cell concentration are increased with the supplementation of EDTA. Enhanced growth of Chlorella sp. KR-1 by the supplementation of EDTA was mainly due to the fact that the supply of iron to the algal culture had been possible for a longer time. When Chlorella sp. KR-1 is cultured in the medium of iron-15H-EDTA, the linear growth rate and the final cell concentration are at their maximum, 0.88 g/l${\cdot}$day and 9.1 g/l, respectively. The results show that Chlorella sp. KR-1 may be used for mass cultivation to fix$CO_2$from stack gases.
The possibility for developing multistage culture system to cultivate larvae by computer simulation with basic experiments was investigated. This culture system was composed of 3 stages. At the 1st stage, Chlorella sp. were cultivated and at 2nd stage Chlorella sp. were supplied to rotifer (Brachionus plicatilis), and rotifer were supplied to larvae at the 3rd stage. In this study, Chlorella sp. were cultivated by batch culture to search for the possibility of continuous feeding to rotifer at 2 nd stage. The maximum specific growth rate ($\mu$$_{max}$) of Chlorella sp. at the logarithmic phase was 0.56 [1/day]. Rotifer was cultivated by fed-batch culture at the feeding rate of Chlorella sp., $10^3$, $10^4$, $10^{5}$ and $10^{6}$ [cells/rotiferㆍh] to search for the relation between the feeding rate of Chlorella sp. and the growth rate of rotifer. As the results, the minimum feeding rate of Chlorella sp. was 2.8 ${\times}$$10^4$ [cells/rotiferㆍday] in the multistage culture system, then the change of rotifer concentration at 2nd stage was simulated by computer. The required amount of rotifer for the growth of larvae was also increased as the growth of larvae. On the 9th day of the culture, the rotifer uptake rate of larvae was 250 [cells/rotiferㆍday]. Based on these basic experiments and results, It was suggested that the possibility of multistage culture system to cultivate larvae with continuous feeding of Chlorella sp. and rotifer.r.
The current study was conducted to identify the differences in the rheological properties of Chlorella sp. powder cultured in a fermentor and in a pond-like environment. Cells. cultured in the same media were harvested and spray dried. The biomass yield from the fermentor culture was 4.7% (dry basis), while that from the pond was 4.3% (dry basis). Measurements of the loose bulk density, tapping test, Hausner's ratio, and compressibility test all revealed differences between the rheological properties of the Chlorella sp. from the two cultivation systems. Although both the fermentor and pond cultured Chlorella sp. showed the same angle of repose, the mean size of the cells was 2.26 $\mu\textrm{m}$ and 2.89 $\mu\textrm{m}$, respectively. The weight of the Chlorella sp. tablets cultured in the fermentor and pond was 0.663 g/tablet and 0.593 g/tablet, respectively, while the friability of the tablets was 21% and 41%, respectively. Observation by Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM) showed that the cell wall of the Chlorella sp. cultured in the fermentor was thinner and more spherical than that cultured in the pond, thereby providing the main characteristic rheological properties of the powder.
The focus of this study was to observe the growth of Chlorella sp., Nannochloris sp., and Botryococcus braunii under mixotrophic conditions (i.e., added glycerol) with the aim of increasing the growth of biomass and algae oil content. A significant growth of biomass was obtained when grown in glycerol rich environment comparing to autotrophic conditions. 5 g/L glycerol yielded the highest biomass concentration for these strains. Mixotrophic conditions improved both the growth of the microalgae and the accumulation of triacylglycerols (TAGs). The maximum amount of TAG in Botryococcus braunii was reached in the growth medium with 10 g/L glycerol and Chlorella sp., Nannochloris sp. with 2 g/L glycerol. The content of saturated fatty acids of Chlorella sp., Nannochloris sp., and Botryococcus braunii was found to be 34.94, 14.23 and 13.39%, and the amount of unsaturated fatty acids was 65.06, 85.78 and 86.61% of total fatty acids, respectively. The fatty acid profiles of the oil for the culture possibility met the necessary requirements and are, therefore, promising resource for biofuel production.
To obtain informations for construction of a mass culture system, factors affecting on the specific growth rate of marine Chlorella sp. purchased from the Chungmu Laboratory of the South Sea Fisheries Institute, the National Fisheries Research and Development Agency were investigated using a vertical tubular photobioreactor (VT-PBR) system. Optimal temperature, illumination intensity, air- and $CO_{2-}$ flow rate for Chlorella sp. were $20^{\circ}C$, 6,000 lux, 0,56 vvm and 0.028 vvm, respectively.

We investigated the effect of monochromatic light emitting diode (LED) on the growth of diatoms Nitzschia sp., Phaeodactylum tricornutum, Skeletonema sp. and green algae Chlorella vulgaris. The four microalgae species were cultured under blue LED (450 nm), yellow LED (590 nm), red LED (650 nm) and fluorescent lamp (mixed wavelengths). The maximum growth rates and cell densities of Nitzschia sp., P. tricornutum and Skeletonema sp. were highest under blue LED, followed by fluorescent lamp, red LED and then yellow LED, however those of C. vulgaris were highest under red LED. This result indicates that blue LED is favorable for the growth of diatoms. Thus, the growth of microalgae under monochromatic light might be species-specific or taxon-specific. Also, these results could be used as an important information in future for remediation of heavy metal contamination in the sediments using LED and microalgae.
Chlorella sp. CMS-1 strain was isolated from the outdoors cultivation pools in Culmansa Co., Ltd. This strain was found to be a rounded type of 3 ${\mu}m$. Phylogenetic analysis by the 18S rRNA sequencing using isolated strain is most similar to Chlorella sp. IFRPD 1018 gene at the level of nucleotide sequence identity at 99%. Accordingly, the isolated Chlorella strain was named as Chlorella sp. CMS-1 based on its morphological and phylogenetic properties. The concentrations of crude protein and fat were 59% and 0.01%, respectively. Major compositional amino acids (mg%) were glutamic acid 6.21, alanine 5.76, aspartic acid 5.44%, glycine 4.29%, and threonine 3.09% and major free amino acids (mg%) were ${\gamma}$-aminobutyric acid (GABA) 7.13%, L-alanine 1.44%, L-glutamic acid 0.90, L-leucine 0.26% and L-glycine 0.20%. The concentrations of major minerals were P 2.25%, K 2.25%, Na 1.09%, Mg 0.63%, and Ca 0.28%.
