Over the past few years, many studies have been conducted on the flow, sediment movement, pollution transportation and scour etc. However, very few attempts have been made at the hydraulic studies reflecting upon the ecological function. The objective of this study is to examine the structures of the flow and turbulence in an open circular channel and their relationship to distribution of the organisms and chironomids. Under different flow conditions, the organic matter and some chironomids were injected into the channel. Using the obtained velocity data, the flow mechanisms and the turbulent shear stresses were analyzed. Organic matters and chironomids were distributed on the region that the velocity was slower and the turbulent shear stresses were smaller. Some habitat moved even though chironomids were inhabited. This phenomenon has relationship with the flow mechanism. Some chironomids have distributed around the habitat structure of a hemisphere. The secondary flow has affected the deposition of the organic matters and the distribution of chironomids.
The Hangang River* is necessary to manage the water environment of severe pollution due to the high density of residential areas, parks, and agriculture and the large population concentrated there. Benthic macroinvertebrates, such as chironomids larvae, are bioindicator species that reflect environmental changes and are crucial for water quality monitoring. In this study, we investigated morphological characteristics and molecular analysis of the chironomids larvae inhabiting the Hangang River area for water environment surveys. For this research, 20 rivers, lakes, and urban area in the Hangang River basin were selected. Chironomids larvae were collected from July to September 2022, and their appearance and characteristics were identified through morphological identification. In addition, phylogenetic analysis was performed based on the mtCOI gene sequences of the collected chironomids larvae, and identification at the genus level was confirmed. As a result, 32 species and 18 genera of 3 subfamilies of Chironomidae larvae were identified, and Stictochironomus sp. dominated most sites(6 sites). The morphological characteristics of the identified chironomids larvae, such as the mentum, ventromental plate, and antenna, were organized into table and pictorial keys, and a Bayesian inference molecular phylogeny was presented. These results provide basic morphological information for genus-level identification and can be used as fundamental information for water quality management.
Numerical simulation of turbulence flow in a circulating channel was performed. The RNG $k-\varepsilon$ model and Reynolds stress model of the FLUENT was used for evaluating the flow mechanisms. The simulation results were compared with the experimental data measured by a ADV (Acoustic Doppler Velocitmeter). The distribution of chironomids was analyzed by the computational results. They distributed at the region of lower velocities and lower turbulence intensity. In the case of a hemisphere structure being located on the straight section, chironomids lived in the upstream and downstream area of the hemisphere. The secondary currents also affected the distribution of chironomids. In conclusion, the computational fluid dynamic techniques can be inexpensively applied for analysing the relationship between flow characteristics and distribution of benthic macroinvertebrates.
On community data. sampled in regular intervals on a long-term basis. artificial neural networks were implemented to extract information on characterizing patterns of community changes. The Adaptive Resonance Theory and Kohonen Network were both utilized in learning benthic macroinvertebrate communities in the Soktae Stream of the Suyong River collected monthly for three years. Initially, by regarding each monthly collection as a separate sample unit, communities were grouped into similar patterns after training with the networks. Subsequently, changes in communities in a sequence of samplings (e.g., two-month, four-month, etc.) were given as input to the networks. After training, it was possible to recognize new data set in line with the sampling procedure. Through the comparative study on benthic macroinvertebrates with these learning processes, patterns of community changes in chironomids diverged while those of the total benthic macro-invertebrates tended to be more stable.
Chironomids are a large group of invertebrates that live in various aquatic habitats. The distribution range of these invertebrates has become varied due to anthropogenic impacts; as such, their distribution can be used as an indicator of environmental health. Adult chironomids are well known in South Korea; however, the larvae have rarely been studied due to difficulties associated with morphological classification. To address this lack of information, we collected larvae from four important rivers in South Korea and summarized their taxonomic morphological characteristics. The antennae, mandible, and mentum were used for larval taxonomic characterization. In this study, we describe the basic morphological features and key pictorial features of 20 species of chironomids, representing 16 genera.

The macroinvertebrate community in the Singal reservoir, Yedang and Juam lake was investigated three times from April 2021 to October 2021. Each lake was investigated by dividing it into inflow, middle-flow, and outflow. Additionally, sampling was conducted again by dividing it into the edge and center parts at each inflow, middle-flow, and outflow. Eight families of benthic macroinvertebrates were collected except for chironomids in the sampling sites. Dominant macroinvertebrates were investigated as chironomids, and Tubificidae was sub-dominant organisms. The density of macroinvertebrate community was higher in the edge area than in the center bottom of the lakes. The density of chironomids was low when the water level was high but was high when the water level was low. In the edge area of the middle-flow in Singal reservoir, the density of chironomids was 1,208 ind. m-2 in April when the water level was high, but it increased to 1,401 ind. m-2 in July when the water level was low. Similarly, the density of chironomids at the outflow of Yedang lake was high (1,990 ind. m-2) in July when the water level was low. The density of chironomids also decreased along with the increasing water level at all edge areas of Juam lake. These results indicated that it will be necessary to consider the water level when studying macroinvertebrate communities in the lake.
The effects of the ecdysteroid agonist tebufenozide on the larvae of Chironomus flaviplumus and Chironomus riparius were tested in the laboratory. Employing a static exposure setup, chironomids were subjected to various tebufenozide concentrations. In the most treatments it reach-ed a statistically significant difference from the control condition. As the concentration of tebufenozide was increased, a relatively larger proportion of the observed mortality was associated with the metamorphosis and molting process. The larval mortality of C. riparius was high in C. flaviplumus during over 30 ${\mu}g\;L^{-1}$ treatments. In terms of development, the effects of tebufenozide were delayed growth stage in relatively lower concentration such as 10 ${\mu}g\;L^{-1}$ tebufenozide treatments. The rates of succeed adult through the molting process were various in treated concentrations or/and the species.
The effects of Di (2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) on the fourth instar larvae of Chironomus riparius were tested in the laboratory. Employing a waterreplacement exposure setup, chironomids were subjected to various concentrations. In the most treatments mortality reached a statistically significant difference from the control conditions. As DEHP concentrations were increased, the rates of emerged adults decreased. Sex ratio was unaffected with little deviation from a 1:1 relationship (except in 1 and $30\mu{g}\;L^{-1})$. The developmental stages was delayed at low concentration (0.3 and $1\mu{g}\;L^{-1})$. Generally the emergent period was different between males and females, and the first emergent day of males was faster than females. The body shape of female adults was larger than males. Differences between males and females were found in body volume, body length and body width. In addition, the body volume showed the significant difference between controls and treatments, and those especially well observed females.
Benthic macroinvertebrates were collecte in the middle reaches of the paenae stream, a tributary of th naktong river in korea, in four seasons from August 1989. To may 1990, during the study period, 125 species, 81 genera and 41 families were collected. Overall, the most dominant species was lepidostoma sp. 1 followed by heptagenia kihada, neoperla quadrata, diamesa sp. 1, ect.. the community was most diverse in autumn, However the number of collectd individuals was highest in winter. Species of chironomids including diamesa sp. 1 and mayflies including paraleptophlebia chocorata were collected exceptionally in a large number in winter. Seasonal occurrence of funtional groups such as collectors, shredders and scrapers was related with the availadlity of food sourses in the stream. The abundance of predators was relatively stable in four seasons with 17% on average. Diversity, tbi and chandler's biotic score(bs) in the paenae strem were 3.75, 14.5, and 100 on average, respectively. Based on biological and chemical indices the paenae stream was clean in the range of xeno- and oligo- saprobity.
