  • This paper aims to investigate if a total of 266 college students from Yanbian, China, and Korea's Jeonnam Province are satisfied with their face and body type, and to find out an image-development method, depending on body characteristics. For this, a questionnaire survey using the 5-point Likert Scale was conducted, and an SPSS program has been used for data analysis. Besides the descriptive analysis, crosstab analysis, t-verification, and frequency analysis have been conducted. As body shape, posture, costume, accessories and makeup play an important role in image formation, this paper intends to form positive ego through exact awareness of the body shape by providing base data to a set image-development strategy. Then, the result has turned out as follows: First, in terms of the body index (i.e., Rohrer index), both Korea's Jeonnam Province and China's Yanbian college students were included in a category of the mean value. In terms of satisfaction with their body shape, on the contrary, China's China's Yanbian college students were higher than Korea's Jeonnam Province college students. Second, male China's Yanbian college students were slightly higher than female China's Yanbian college students in terms of satisfaction with their facial shape. However, the male students showed no big interest in facial care. Third, in terms of facial shape, an egg-shaped face was the most preferred in both China's Yanbian and Korea's Jeonnam Province college students, followed by an inverted triangle-shaped face in China's Yanbian college students and a diamond-shaped face in Korea's Jeonnam Province college students, showing significant difference ($p{\le}.001$). Even though both college students live in Northeast Asia, their preference on facial shape turned out to greatly differ, which indicates their different social environments. This paper will be helpful in global marketing for college students who are the major consumers in the future as Korean-Chinese exchange increases.

  • The purpose of the study is to report differences in the effects of learner characteristics on the self-regulated learning (SRL) abilities between Chinese and Korean distance learners by using a structured SRL scale. A standardized 54-item self-regulated learning scale (SRAS) was used. The reliability was tested both in China and Korea which showed the scale had good reliability. The comparative study were conducted by administering the SRAS on 1999 Chinese distance learners from the Open Distance Education Center of Beijing Normal University and 1941 Korean distance learners from H Cyber University. Data on four dimensions of SRL - planning, control, regulating, and evaluation - were analyzed using 't-test' and 'ANOVA' with regards to the learner characteristics such as gender, age, prior education level, semesters, location and major. Results indicated that the average participant had an above medium level of SRL ability in all of the four dimensions. There were significant differences in the self-regulated learning ability between Chinese and Korean distance learners. Chinese distance learners scored higher in SRAS than Korean distance learners. The effects of learner characteristics on the SRL ability showed different patterns in the two countries. As for gender, male learners scored better in SRL than female learners in China, whereas it was just the opposite in Korea. No age differences were found in China, but Korean data exhibited a consistent age effect in all dimensions. In Korea, the age group older than 46 scored the highest, followed by the group between 35 to 45 years old, the group between 26 to 35 years old and the group younger than 25. As for location, Korean distance students from metropolitan were better than those from other regions, whereas it was on the contrary in China, albeit the location effect was not statistically significant. Prior education level had a clear and consistent effect on the SRL ability in both countries: the distance learners from junior colleges had better planning, regulating and evaluating abilities than those who came from senior high schools. These results have been discussed in various contexts of distance/online education as well as in relation to different culture between China and Korea. The results will also have implications for designing distance and online learning generally.

  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the satisfaction with school meal service and the food preference in elementary school students who are in their growth period. A total of 484 students (242 boys) participated and completed a questionnaire survey. The results indicated that the merit of school meals was the highest in 'balanced diet'. 'Food hygiene' and 'delicious food' were the most important factors in school meals. Most of the students wanted 'balance between eastern and western foods' and 'new dishes' for the menu of school meals. For the distribution of meals, 'various kinds of side dishes' and 'warmth of dishes' were mainly required. The main problems of the current environment of school meals were 'long waiting time' and 'noise of the cafeteria'. In satisfaction with the school meal service, the highest satisfactory factor was 'staffs' cleanliness', following 'arrangement of furniture in cafeteria' and 'nutrition information-providing'; whereas, the lowest factor was 'staffs' kindness'. In the preference of foods, students preferred 'white rice'; whereas they did not like 'bean rice'; and 'fried rice' was preferred. In side dishes with meat and fish, most of the meats including 'Tangsuyuk' and 'Bulgogi' were preferred. For fish, 'fried hairtail' was preferred; whereas, 'fried Spanish mackerel' was not. In case of kimchi, 'Chinese cabbage kimchi' and 'cubed radish kimchi' were especially preferred. Considering these results, intensive improvement is required to increase school meal satisfaction by understanding the students' needs. An effort to allow the students' preferences to be reflected in the menu is also needed.

Although the history of Chinese modem university education is short, and all Chinese Universities experienced same social problems, however, development of each university was different. Especially after 90's, with applying socialism market economy theory, Chinese university education have changed a lot. Main conclusions were summarized as follows. First, to exert university's self-determination, University management system was changed. More and more rights and freedoms of operating university were given to universities which were originally controlled by central and local government. With that, universities were cheered to develop extensively based on its ability. Second, efforts to fit market economy were observed. It reflects in all aspects, such as systems of university financing, operating, admission and graduation of students. Third, professor competition system was adopted to promote professors enthusiasm. Forth, to survival in hot competition among universities, differentiation policy was applied. In brief, it could be said that rapid developments of Chinese university education have achieved recently. However, problems such as universities are still under supervision of central and local government: expand of university scale rather than education quality was focused on: limit of investment to university: lack of legal protection for finical supporting: lack of university democratization were still remain. It was expected that these problems will be solved in future university reforms.
