  • In order to investigate structural properties of Chindo black rice(grown in Chindo, Chonnam) starch and its amylopectin, Chindo black rice was investigated in comparison to Shinsun waxy rice. The maximum absorbance wave and intrinsic viscosity of Chindo black rice starch and Shinsun waxy rice starch were 523 nm, 521 nm and 183 ml/g, 178 ml/g, respectively. ${\beta}-amylolysis$ limit(%) of Chindo black rice and Shinsun waxy rice starch were 62.8% and 60.3%, respectively. Chindo black rice was determined to be a waxy rice due to the results of iodine reaction and elution profile on Sephroce CL-2B. The chain of amylopectins in Chindo black rice distributed fraction 1$(F_1)$ of above degree of polymerization$({\overline{DP}})$ 55, fraction 2$(F_2)$ of ${\overline{DP}} $40{\sim}50$ and fraction 3$(F_3)$ of ${\overline{DP}} $15{\sim}20$, and the ratio of $F_3$ to $F_2$ for Chindo black rice was higher than that for Shinsun waxy rice. The super long chain of amylopectin in Chindo black rice was consisted much more than that of Shinsun waxy rice. ${\beta}-limit$ dextrins in Chindo black rice amylopectin distributed $F_1$ of above ${\overline{DP}} 55, $F_2$ of ${\overline{DP}} $30{\sim}45$ and $F_3$ of ${\overline{DP}} $10{\sim}20$. Little difference was shown between elution patterns of the pullulanase treated ${\beta}-limit$ dextrins of Chindo black rice amylopectin and Shinsun waxy rice amylopectin. These results suggest that Chindo black rice starch was similar to Shinsun waxy rice starch.

  • Twenty-two species of Echinodermata collected from 11 localities in Chindo Island, Korea in September, 1990 and July, 1994 are recorded. One asteroids, Luidia quinaria, five ophiudoids such as Astrocladus coniferus coniferus, A.c.dofleini, Ophicatis affinis, Stegophiura sladeni, Amphipholis sp., four echinoids such as Temnopleurus toreumaticus, T. hardwicki, Hemicentrotus pulcherrimus, anthoicidaris crassispina and two holothuroids such as Protankyra bidentata, Stichopus japonicus are unrecorded species by this time in Chindo Is. One asteroid species, Asterina minor is newly recorded in Korea water and its taxonomic characteristics are redescribed.

  • The joint faunal survey of Chindo Island were made in commemoration of the 10 th anniversary of the Korean Society of Systematic Zoology during July 22-26, 1994. The materials collected were identified to 31 species in eight families, of which eight species were previously known and the remainders were newly recorded from Chindo Island . Halecium magellanicum and Obelia flexuosa are new to the Korean fauna. Adding three previously known species, which were not examined in this work , to the above results, the hydroids recorded from Chindo Island so far consist of 34 species in eight families.

  • The study on the classification of the Chindo Islands ascidians was conducted by collecting the specimens from five localities in July and November, 1994 and the previous records. The ascidians were classified into 7 families, 11 genera and 16 species. They are all known species in Korean waters. Among them nine species were found to be new to the Chindo Is. From the standpoint of water forms, the composition of the ascidians from Chindo Is. is made up of three elements, viz., temperate (8species, 50%), temperature-tropical (7 species, 44%) and tropical (1 species, 6%) . A boreal water species and boreal-temperature species were not found . It may be attributable to the fact that the water of this area is warm because of Kuroshio Water Current.

  • Five hypotrichs inhabiting the representative aquatic and terrestrial habitats of Chindo Island, Strongylidium muscorum, Gonostomum affine, Histriculus cavicola, H. muscorum, Steinia quadrinucleata are discovered from Chindo Island. Of these, two species, Strongylidium muscorum Kahl, 1932 and Steinia quadrinucleata Dragesco and Njine, 1971 are newly recorded from Korea.

  • Lipoxygenase activities of three cultivars of black rice (Chindo, Suwon-415, Yongkeum-1) were determined using an oxygen polargraphic method to measure oxygen uptake. Studies at different pH levels revealed that the optimum pH was about pH 7.0 for Suwon-415 and pH 7.5 for Chindo and Yongkeum-1. The specific activities of Chindo, Suwon-415 and Yongkeum-1 at optimal pH were 41.0, 27.3, and 29.6 unit/mg-protein, respectively. In all the cultivars, there was an increase in the activity with increase in reaction temperature. Enzyme activity was tested at different concentrations of the substrate. The resulting $K_m$ and $V_{max}$ values of Chindo, Suwon-415, and Youngkeum-1 were 0.059, 0.050, and 0.066 mM and 2020, 2283, and 1616 unit/g-grain, respectively. Enzyme activity decreased at all storage temperatures(25, 4, and $-40^{\circ}C$).

  • The ants found in Chindo Island were investigated from July to October, 1994. We were interested in the ant fauna of this island because it is one of larger islands of Korea and being well supplied with subterranean water, quite different for mother islands in this respect. Collections were examined from 11 sites of Chindo Is. , of which 21 species of 15 genera under 4 subfamilies are classified and reported.

  • JC Raulston Arboretum of the North Carolina State University houses 113 species of Korean native landscape woody plants. Styrax japonicus 'Emerald Pagoda'[formerly 'Sohuksan'] is native to Korea, China, and Japan. 'Emerald pagoda' is a special cultivar found by DR. J.C. Raulston during the United States National Arboretum plant collection expedition of the island of Sohuksan at the Western end of the Korea in 1985. Incredible, thick, glossy, large-leafed form of this beautiful white flowering tree found in Korea in 1985. It was probably the most outstanding ornamental plant to come from the expedition after his trip to Sohuksan and Chindo in the harsh perilous islands of the coast of Korea. He brought this one back in his suitcase. Viburnum awabuki 'Chindo' is and evergreen broadleaf shrub. It is for screening and as fire resistant trees in the southern region of Korea, because of its compact, leathery leaves. 'Chindo' was discovered on the island of Chindo by the U.S. National arboretum plant exploration team including J.C. Raulston during its 1985 Korean trip. Cuttings were taken from this plant, and liners were produced over subsequent years. These liners are now being evaluated for hardiness and fruit production throughout the Southeast of USA.
