There were 1,258 participants(age 45; male=601, female=657; 1,111=nuclear, 147=extended). The measures yielded Cronbach α=.67~.95, inter-judger reliability= 95.1%, Kappa=.95. The results showed that, first, there were no significant differences between two family structures in terms of SES excepting academic career. Second, there were significant differences between two family structures in family relation, psychological characteristics. That is, adults in the extended family, versus those in the nuclear family, provide greater emotional support to children, sacrificed more towards children, and have greater expectations for children supporting them when they retire. Also, adults in the extended family displayed greater self-efficacy and happiness. Third, there were significant differences between two family structures in caring for elderly parents. Adults in the extended family apportioned a greater parent's allowance, and more number of meals with parents, and spent more time talking with parents, and displayed greater degree of filial piety and more caring behavior towards parents. Fourth, as for the perception of caring for elderly parents according to family structure, when adults were asked about "the best way to care for parents", the most frequent response was providing a peace-of-mind for parents. As for "the most difficult aspect of caring for parents", differences in opinions followed by financial difficulty were the most. As for "the best aspects of caring for parents", the most frequent responses were good for children's upbringing and family harmony. Based on the results, suggestions for further research have been discussed.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between job stress, turnover intention, and the moderating roles of motivation for child care work. The subjects were 238 child-care teachers who were worked at child-care centers in Seoul. Questionnaires were used to rate job stress, turnover intention, and the motivation for child care work of teachers. The collected data were mainly analyzed by descriptive statistics, t-test, one-way ANOVA, Duncan test, Pearson's correlation and the multiple regression analysis. The main results of this study were as follows. First, there were differences in turnover intention according to individual characteristics such as career at the current child-care center and total career. Second, job stress was positively correlated with turnover intention, and negatively correlated with active motivation and material motivation. And turnover intention was negatively correlated with active motivation and material motivation. Third, a moderator effect of the active motivation was found in the relationship between the job stress and the turnover intention. Especially the active motivation is suggested to reduce the negative results of job stress and turnover intention. Therefore, the results indicate the importance of the active motivation which is considered as an aptitude, interest, affection for children and self realization when child-care teachers make a decision to enter the child-care work profession.

  • In this study, the problem of child care gaps has arisen due to the expansion of women's entry into the workforce and the increase in working couples, and the care cliff phenomenon after children enter elementary school has been identified as one of the causes of women's career disconnection and low birth rates, and child care services have been initiated to solve care problems and balance work and family. The importance of childcare services to the safety and well-being of children has been highlighted by the restrictions on school attendance and the absence of caregivers during the COVID-19 pandemic. The government has been making policy efforts to reduce the gap in child care, but problems with the effectiveness and efficiency of the child care system have arisen due to unstable target selection and delivery systems by ministries and projects in the implementation of child care services. Therefore, this study examines the child care services implemented by each ministry to reduce the blind spots of after-school care services in the community and prepare efficient operation plans for various delivery systems, and seeks directions for the development of child care services.

  • Since 2012, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe'sadministration began to promote women's participation and advancement in the workplace and established the Act on the Promotion of Female Participation and Career Advancement in the Workplace (the Act) in 2015. Some criticize this Act as a way to utilize women for economic development and to deal with the shrinking working population. In contrast, others point out that it is a law that can be beneficial for women. As such, this Act serves as an interesting case of a women's policy promoted by a conservative government. This paper's objective is to shed light on if and how women are substantively represented in the Diet members' statements made during the legislative debate of the bill on the Promotion of Female Participation and Career Advancement in the Workplace between 2014 and 2015. This paper asks two research questions. First, based on the mixed evaluation of the Act made in the studies about the Abe administration's women's policies, this research asks if the Diet members speak of women as resources to use for other economic and social goals or if women are substantively represented. Second, drawing insights from the literature on women's substantive representation, this research asks how Diet members speak for women. Particularly, based on the studies on conservatism and substantive representation of women, this question seeks to determine if Diet members engage in the conservative representation of women, taking women's roles as mothers and wives who provide care for children, husbands, and elders at home for granted. The results of the analysis demonstrate that the number of statements that explicitly claimed to use women was small. Second, while some Diet members of conservative political parties engaged in the conservative representation of women, there were more instances of non-conservative representation, in which a variety of types of women were represented. These findings reveal that even when the conservative government's intention to submit the bill was to utilize women rather than acting for women, Diet members could speak for various types of women and engage in the non-conservative representation of women. The findings also imply the importance of paying attention to formal and informal legislative deliberation rules to figure out how women's substantive representation can occur under a conservative government and in a legislature dominated by conservative parties.

  • This study explored the relationships among such variables as work-family compatibility, gender attitude, reasons for low birth rate, and education level, using a sample of 2,678 from the '2009 National Survey for Marriage and Birth Trend'. The purpose of this study was to identify the ideas about how to support married couples' work-family balance, and how to change gender attitude to promote childbirth. The results are as follows. The type of ideal work-family balance was different by education level, but not by gender. Low level of education was associated with choice of the full time work without a child. Male singles, compared to female singles, preferred the role of a man as a bread winner, and a woman as a house worker. Female singles had the higher level of hope for husband's capability of caring children. This trend was intensified by choice of the full time work with 2 children. Singles who prefer working as a full time worker with 2 children worried more about low birth rate in Korea than singles who prefer working as a part time worker with one or two children. The most frequently cited reason for low birth rate was 'high cost of both child care and education'. The next was 'difficulty in buying a residence, followed by 'increase in the number of career woman'. Female singles who want to work full time with 2 or more children worried more about the burden of child caring and education than male singles. Implications and suggestions were provided based on the results.
