The surface of natural graphite was modified by the use of hydrogen peroxide and evaluated as an anode material for lithium ion capacitors (LICs). The surface treatment was carried out under various ultrasonic conditions of 200, 300, and 400W, which were applied to a mixture of natural graphite and hydrogen peroxide solution for 1 h. While the bulk structure was maintained, the hexagonal symmetry and physical properties of natural graphite, such as BET surface area, tap density, and particle size, were affected by the surface treatment. FT-IR and XPS measurements confirmed the signature of C=O on the surface of graphite samples after treatment. Both the pristine and surface-treated graphites showed a similar reversible capacity of $370mAhg^{-1}$, and the coulombic efficiency of surface-treated graphite decreased with higher ultrasonic energies (89.1%, 89.0%, and 88.0% for 200, 300, and 400 W) comparing with pristine graphite (89.4%). The capacity retention of LICs was greatly improved with the treated natural graphite. The graphite treated under the ultrasonic energy of 300 W and pristine natural graphite showed capacity retention of 77.5% and 42.9%, implying that the surface treatment was an effective method for the improvement of natural graphite as an anode material for LICs.
This study investigated the surface characteristics of polylactic acid (PLA) film after one atmospheric pressure plasma treatment. We used de-ionized water and diiodomethane as polar and non-polar solvents, respectively, for measuring contact angles, and subsequently calculated the surface free energy of PLA film. The contact angle and free energy of PLA surface were optimized at the treatment time of 30 sec, RF-power of 70 W, Ar gas flow rate of 6 lpm and air exposure time of 5 min. We analyzed the change of chemical functional groups on the surface of PLA film through XPS and were able to observe the change of polar functional groups such as -C=O, -CO, -COO on the surface of PLA film after one atmospheric pressure plasma treatment.

In this study, in order to improve the thermal and electrical properties of epoxy/graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs), surface modifications of GNPs are conducted using silane coupling agents. Three silane coupling agents, i.e. 2-(3,4-epoxycyclohexyl)-ethyltrimethoxysilane (ETMOS), 3-glycidoxypropyltriethoxysilane (GPTS), and 3-glycidoxypropyltrimethoxysilane (GPTMS), were used. Among theses, GPTMS exhibits the best modification performance for fabricating GNP-incorporated epoxy composites. The effect of the silanization is evaluated using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The electrical and thermal conductivities are characterized. The epoxy/silanized GNPs exhibits higher thermal and electrical properties than the epoxy/raw GNPs due to the improved dispersion state of the GNPs in the epoxy matrix. The TEM microphotographs and Turbiscan data demonstrate that the silane molecules grafted onto the GNP surface improve the GNP dispersion in the epoxy.

We have investigated the effect of inductively coupled plasma (ICP) treatment on the early growth stage of heteroepitaxial Ge layers grown on Si(100) substrates using low pressure chemical vapor deposition (LPCVD), The Si(100) substrates were treated by ICP process with various source and bias powers, followed by the Ge deposition, The ICP treatment led to the enhancement in the coalescence of Ge islands, The growth rate of Ge on Si(100) with ICP surface treatment is about 5 times higher than that without ICP surface treatment. A missing dimer caused by the ICP surface treatment can act as a nucleation site for Ge adatoms, which could be responsible for the improvement in growth behavior of Ge on Si(100) substrates.
This study analyzed surface-chemical transitions in manufacturing process of traditional acupuncture as proposed method by Dongeuibogam. The manufacturing process of traditional acupuncture from a used iron for a long time was divided by primary medicinal herbs treatment, secondary medicinal herbs treatment and tertiary treatment using by dog meat. The traditional acupuncture research process was measured according to the characteristics and changes of the specimens at each processing step of the manufacturing process. The following devices were used to Surface analysis. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Energy Dispersive Spectrometer (EDS), X-ray diffraction analyzer (XRD). As a result, medicinal herbs removed impurities on the surface and raised the antibacterial effect in the manufacturing process of traditional acupuncture. Furthermore, the ingredients of medicinal herbs were coated on the surface of the iron. Dog meat influenced to prevent surface corrosion, reduce friction when the acupuncture was inserted. Although the process empirically obtained, a glimpse of the wisdom of our ancestors was revealed. These ancestral wisdom can be expected to apply today, when used in manufacturing process of a modern stainless steel acupuncture to compensate for the defective part.
A vital step in magnetic tape manufacturing is the surface modification of polymer substrate prior to ink application. A critical element for good adhesion of magnetic ink on polymeric substrate is the ability to join ink in cost-effective manner. Corona discharging is one of the effective methods of modifying polymer surface to improve adhesion while maintaining the desirable properties of the film itself. Surface treatment by corona which is exposure of film surface to electron or ion bombardment, rather than mere exposure to active species, like atomic oxygen or ozone, can enhance adhesion by removing contaminant, electret, roughening surface, and/or introducing reactive chemical groups. Reactive neutrals, ions, electron and photons generated during the corona treatment interact simultaneously with polymers to alter surface chemical composition, wettability, and thus film adhesion. However, it is highly recommended that extensive chains scission be avoided because it can lead to side-effect by forming sticky matter, resulting in dropouts. This paper reviews principles of surface preparation of polymer substrate by corona discharging. In addition, the experimental section provides a description of parameter optimization on corona discharging treatment and its side-effect. Experimental results are discussed in terms of surface wetting as determined by contact angle measurements.
In this study, the control of microstructure for increasing surface roughness of Al with an electro-chemical reaction and a post treatment is systematically investigated. The Al specimen is electro-chemically treated in an electrolyte. In condition of the post treatment at $100^{\circ}C$ for 10 min, a change of the surface microstructure occur at 50V (5 min), and a oxidized layer is at 400V, to which lead a decreasing surface roughness. The minimum temperature of the post treatment for a change of microstructure is $80^{\circ}C$. Moreover, in the condition of 300V (5 min), the electro-chemical reaction is followed by the post treatment at $100^{\circ}C$, the critical enduring time for the change of microstructure is 3 min. The longer post treatment time leads to the rougher surface. The treated Al specimen demonstrate better heat release ability owing to the higher surface roughness than the non-treated Al.

Surface treatment of sol-gel bioglass is required to increase its biomedical applications. In this study, a dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma treatment in atmospheric pressure was performed on the surface of [$SiO_2-CaO-P_2O_5-B_2O_3$] sol-gel derived glass. The obtained bioglass was treated by plasma using discharge current 12 mA with an exposure period for 30 min. The type of discharge can be characterized by measuring the discharge current and applied potential waveform and the power dissipation. Apatite formation on the surface of the DBD-treated and untreated samples after soaking in simulated body fluid (SBF) at $37^{\circ}C$ is characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-Ray diffraction (XRD), inductively coupled plasma (ICP-OES) and scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive spectroscopy (SEM/EDS). We observed a marked increase in the amount of apatite deposited on the surface of the treated plasma samples than those of the untreated ones, indicating that DBD plasma treatment is an efficient method and capable of modifying the surface of glass beside effectively transforming it into highly bioactive materials.
Experimental studies are carried out in order to investigate the effects of heat treatment on the surface machined by W-EDM. In this work, two ways of heat treatment after W-EDM are considered. As a comparison, the machined surface by a traditional method such as milling/grinding is also considered. Thereby, specimens are prepared by four different machining methods. Those are (1) milling and then grinding, (2) wire-cut electric discharge machining (W-EDM), and (3) low temperature heat treatment or (4) high temperature heat treatment after W-EDM. The resulting surface roughness are measured and the changes of surface microstructures are investigated using the scanning electron microscope (SEM) with energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDS). In general, heat treatment after W-EDM result in smoother surface and better chemical composition at the machined surface. Especially, high temperature tempering could remove defects in the thermally affected zone, which cause an overall deterioration of the surface machined by W-EDM.

Carbon nanomaterials (CNMs), particularly carbon nanotube and graphene-based materials, are rapidly emerging as one of the most effective adsorbents for wastewater treatment. CNMs hold great potential as new generation adsorbents due to their high surface to volume ratio, as well as extraordinary chemical, mechanical and thermal stabilities. However, implementation of pristine CNMs in real world applications are still hindered due to their poor solubility in most solvents. Hence, surface modification of CNMs is essential for wastewater treatment application in order to improve its solubility, chemical stability, fouling resistance and efficiency. Numerous studies have reported the applications of functionalized CNMs as very promising adsorbents for treating organic and inorganic wastewater pollutants. In this paper, the removal of organic dye and phenol contaminants from wastewater using various type of functionalized CNMs are highlighted and summarized. Challenges and future opportunities for application of these CNMs as adsorbents in sustainable wastewater treatment are also addressed in this paper.
