  • Surface-enhanced Raman (SER) scattering of 2-cyanonaphthalene (2-CN) has been investigated in silver sol. Addition of halide ions was needed to obtain authentic SER spectra of the molecule. The SER spectra thus obtained exhibited a slight but noticeable dependence on the kind of halide ions used. This halide-dependent spectral variation was attributed to the orientational change of molecule on silver sol surface. A possible mechanism for such an orientational change is proposed in terms of the competitive adsorption of 2-CN with halide ions on the so-called halide-specific sites.

  • Macrocyclic ligands have been studied as cation carriers in a supported liquid membrane system. Cd2+ has been transported using nitrogen substituted macrocycles as carriers and several divalent metal ions (M2+=Zn, Co, Ni, Cu, Pb, Mg, Ca, and Sr) have been transported using DBN3O2, DBN2O2and PolyNtnoen as carriers in a supported liquid membrane system. Competitive Cd2+-M2+ transport studies have also been carried out with the same system. Ligand structure, stability constant, membrane solvent and carrier concentration are also important parameters in the transport of metal ions.

  • This article presents the advantages of utilizing gossypol and its derivatives as reagents for iron (III) (Fe (III)) ions. A novel spectrophotometric method has been developed for the determination of Fe (III) using gossypol derivatives in the presence of a universal buffer solution. Optimal conditions have been identified, and the composition and stability constants of the Fe (III) complex with gossypolacetic acid have been determined.

  • Removal of heavy metal ions from aqueous solution by brown sea weeds (Hizikia fusiformis, Laminaria, and Undaria pinnatifida) was 80-96% for lead, cadmium, chromium and copper ions. Fifty percent of the adsorption was completed in 4 min. The uptake of lead and cadmium ions followed Langmuir adsorption. In the adsorption experiments using single and multi metal ions 80-95% of metal ions were removed, and the removal efficiency was the best for lead ion.

  • Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) were synthesized by laser (Nd:YAG, ${\lambda}$ = 1064 nm) ablation of a gold target immersed in various aqueous electrolyte solutions (7 mM of LiCl, NaCl, KCl, NaBr, and NaI) as well as in deionized water. The surface plasmon absorption and EDX of AuNPs so produced as well as their TEM images were analyzed to investigate the effects of ambient ions on the growth and aggregation of NPs. The size of AuNPs was reduced by laser ablation in the presence of chloride and bromide ions while it increased drastically when AuNPs were formed in iodide solution. Interestingly, triangular nanoplates were synthesized only in iodide solution. Surface chemistry on AuNPs in various electrolyte solutions was explored to elucidate the role of ions on the size and stability of AuNPs.

  • The adsorption experiments of lithium ions were conducted in the fixed bed column packed with activated carbon modified with nitric acid. Effect of inlet concentration, bed hight and flow rate on the removal of lithium ions was investigated. The experimental results showed that the removal and the adsorption capacity of lithium ions increased with increasing inlet concentration, and decreased with increasing flow rate. When the bed height increased, the removal and the adsorption capacity increased. The breakthrough curves gave a good fit to Bohart-Adams model. Adsorption capacity and breakthrough time calculated from Bohart-Adams model, these results were remarkably consistent with the experimental values. The adsorption capacity was not changed in the case of 3 times repetitive use of adsorbent.

  • In this study, the redox state of iron in sodium silicate glasses was varied by changing the melting conditions, such as the melting temperature and particle size of iron oxide. The oxidation states of the iron ion were determined by wet chemical analysis and UV-Vis spectroscopy methods. Iron commonly exists as an equilibrium mixture of ferrous ions, $Fe^{2+}$, and ferric ions $Fe^{3+}$. In this study, sodium silicate glasses containing nanoparticles of iron oxide (0.5% mol) were prepared at various temperatures. Increase of temperature led to the transformation of ferric ions to ferrous ions, and the intensity of the ferrous peak in 1050 nm increased. Nanoparticle iron oxide caused fewer ferrous ions to be formed and the $\frac{Fe^{2+}}{Fe^{3+}}$ equilibrium ratio compared to that with micro-oxide iron powder was lower.

  • In this paper molecular dynamics simulations were employed to investigate the structural and dynamic properties of hydrogen ions impacted on the Ni (100) surface with the $45^{\circ}$ incident angle. The initial kinetic energies of the hydrogen ion range from 100 to 1,600 eV. Together with the trajectory visualization of hydrogen ions, we computed scattering and penetration yields, mean energies and angles, and probability and energy distributions as a function of longitudinal and azimuthal directions. In the case of lower energy scattering ions, the multiple collision effects were found to be important to the third layers or lower. For higher energy penetrating ions, compared with the normal incident angle, it was significant the effective channeling effects through the Ni layers and the angle dependencies were indicated both in the longitudinal and the azimuthal angle directions.

  • The structures and energies of p-tert-butylcalix[5]crown-6-ether (1) and its alkylammonium complexes have been calculated by DFT B3LYP/6-31G(d,p) method. We have studied the binding sites of these host-guest complexes focusing on the p-tert-butylcalix[5]arene pocket (endo) or the crown-6-ether moiety (exo) of 1. The smaller alkylammonium cations have the better complexation efficiency with p-tert-butylcalix[5]crown-6- ether than the bulkier alkylammonium ions. For the sec- and tert-butylammonium ions, the hydrogen-bond distances of the exo-complexes are shorter, therefore, stronger than the endo-cases. This DFT calculated result is in parallel with the trend of the experimental association constants of the branched butylammonium ions.
