Recently, due to environmental and toxicity issues, there has been increasing attention on research regarding natural products that can reduce the use of chemical fertilizers. Wood extracts derived from the biorefining process contain various fertilizer ingredients. HPLC analysis revealed that wood extract contains approximately 5.2% hemicellulosic sugar. The growth of lettuce (Lactuca sativa) upon treatment with wood extract (extract obtained from steam-exploded pine) or water-soluble fertilizers containing different nutrients was analyzed in this study. After two weeks, the growth characteristics of lettuce as affected by wood extract or water-soluble fertilizers were significantly different. The effect of water-soluble fertilizers containing ascorbic acid, magnesium sulfate, citric acid, potassium nitrate, amino acids, or seaweed extract was less desirable than that of wood extracts regarding plant height (18.6 cm), number of leaves (10), leaf length (14.1 cm), shoot fresh wight (9.8 g/plant), root fresh weight (0.8 g/plant) and shoot dry weight (0.6 g/plant). The plant height, number of leaves, leaf length, shoot fresh wight, root fresh weight, shoot dry weight of water-soluble fertilizers containing wood extract were significantly different compared to the control (plant height :13.5 cm, number of leaves : 7, leaf length : 9.4 cm, shoot fresh wight : 5.3 g/plant, root fresh weight : 0.7 g/plant, shoot dry weight : 0.4 g/plant, root dry weight : 0.07 g/plant). From these results, it was concluded that wood extract can be used as a potential water-soluble fertilizer to increase the yield of leafy vegetables.

The radioactivity concentrations of Naturally Occurring Radioactive Materials (NORM) i.e., 226Ra, 232Th, and 4K in various chemical fertilizers being used in the agricultural soil of Pakistan were determined utilizing gamma spectrometry by employing a High Purity Germanium (HPGe) detector. The radioactivity concentrations of 226Ra, 232Th, and 4K extended from 2.58 ± 0.8-265.7 ± 8.8 Bq kg-1, 1.53 ± 0.14-76.6 ± 1.07 Bq kg-1 and 36.5 ± 1.34-15606.7 ± 30.2 Bq kg-1 respectively. The radiological hazard parameters such as internal and external indices and annual effective dose rates were calculated, while excessive lifetime cancer risk factors for the indoor and outdoor areas were found in the range from 0.3×10-3 to 10.723×10-3 and 0.03×10-3 to 2.7948×10-3 of most fertilizers, however, some values were slightly higher than the UNSCEAR (The United Nations Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation) recommended values for potash-containing fertilizers such as MOP (Muriate of Potash).
The physical and chemical characteristics of solid organic wastes from paper and pulp industries, tanneries, and food processing industries were studied with regard to fertilizer value as well as humus sources as a rational method of waste utilization. The pulp and paper mill wastes containing low mineral nutrients but high lignin may be utilized for soil amendments through humus preparation. Chemical treatment sludges of tannery wast water contained appreciable fertilizer nutrients andiliming materials, but utilization as fertilizers or soil amendments depends on the pollution effect of high chromium content, which has not been well understood. Food processing wastes may be utilized as organic fertilizers or micronutrient sources for plant. Some wastes containing high water-soluble sugars or lower C/N ratio than 20 may be utilized as additives for rapid humus preparation.
This study is to find the optimum draw solution in fertilizer-drawn forward osmosis desalination. Considering osmotic pressure, solubility, and pH, 20 blended fertilizers were screened. Their performance were evaluated in terms of pure water permeate flux, reverse solute flux, and specific reverse solute flux for nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. The pure water permeate flux of blended fertilizers including KCl were relatively higher. The reverse solute flux and specific reverse solute flux for nitrogen of blended fertilizers containing ${NO_3}^-$ ion were relatively higher than those of the nitrate ion-free draw solution. Those for phosphorus, and potassium of blended fertilizers including $NH_4H_2PO_4$, and $KNO_3$ were relatively higher than those of the phosphorus-free, and potassium-free draw solution, respectively. The blended fertilizer of $NH_4H_2PO_4$ and KCl contains all of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium which are essential elements of fertilizer, and has the relatively high water permeation flux and the low reverse solute flux for nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. Therefore, it is the most effective draw solution for fertilizer-drawn forward osmosis desalination.

A field experiment to evaluate the effect of application of different organic manures and inorganic fertilizers on growth, yield and quality of leaf was studied during 2004-05 has showed that, the application of 10 kg each of Azospirillum brasilense and Aspergillus awamori+20% each of recommended N through compost+green manure (Glyricidia maculata)+castor cake+vermicompost+Urea and remaining P and K through fertilizers ($T_{11}$) has recorded significantly higher leaf yield (250 g/ plant and 34.70 tonnes/ha/yr, respectively) with improvement in growth characters as compared to control. Leaf quality status was also improved in terms of N (3.19%), P (1.97%), K (1.28%), total soluble protein (8.39 mg/ml), total soluble sugars (14.40 mg/ml), secondary nutrients viz., Ca (3.00%), Mg (0.60%), S (0.35%) and micronutrients viz., Cu (0.410 ppm), Mn (0.454 ppm) and Zn (0.112 ppm) contents. The mulberry grown with 20 tonnes of compost+300:120:120 Kg of NPK/ha/year through fertilizer ranked second for growth and foliar constituents.
This study was carried out to investigate the effects of soil microbial fertilizers on yields of Chinese cabbage (Brassica campestris L.). Five microbial fertilizers, MPK+Husk+Palma, Husk+Palma, MPK+Compost, BLCS(Bio livestock cattle system) cattle dropping, and Tomi, were used. All of microbial fertilizers significantly increased yields of Chinese cabbage, except BLCS cattle dropping. MPK+Husk+Palma was the most effective than any other treatments. Chinese cabbage treated with Tomi showed higher concentrations of K, Ca, Mg, Fe, Mn, and Zn than Compost treatment. MPK+ Husk+Palma was high in concentrations of Mg and Mn. MPK+Compost was high in concentrations of K, Mg, and Na. In a chemical components of soil, concentrations of K and P was increased with Tomi treatment, however, the other concentrations of plant and soil chemical components were not different. In a microbial properties of soil, Tomi, Husk+Palma, and MPK+Husk+Palma treatments increased in the number of total bacteria and bacilli. Tomi treatment increased in the number of actinomycetes and fungi. The other microbial properties of soil showed no significant differences. It would be assumed that yield increase in Chinese cabbage might be due to the beneficial microbial properties, therefore, those would increase yields of Chinese cabbage.
The influence of manure, chemical fertilizers, heavy metals and cleaner on the rate of degradation of alachlor in soil was studied. The degradation rate of alachlor in the soil followed first-order reaction kinetics. The half-life was 6.4 days. The degradation was accelerated by the amendment of manure. Adding chemical fertilizers to the soil enhanced alachlor degradation more in the presence of nitrogen than potassium. On the other hand, adding heavy metals or cleaner to the soil decreased the degradation rate. The half-life of alachlor in soil treated with Cd, Cr, Ni, Zn and Cu was 11.0, 8.3, 7.9, 7.2 and 6.7 days, respectively, and that of the cleaner is 7.5 days. The microbial biomass and the respiration rate in the soil were promoted by the amendment of manure and chemical fertilizers, and inhibited by the addition of heavy metals and cleaner. The degradation rate correlate positively with the microbial biomass and the respiration rate.
This study was done to elucidate effects on organic and chemical fertilizers for growth characteristics, saponin content and antioxidant activity in Platycodin grandiflorum Ridix root. Chemical and mixed organic fertilizers were treated at levels of 50%, 100% and 200% based on nitrogen 3 kg/10a before transplant of Platycodin grandiflorum Ridix. As a result, when 50% mixed organic and chemical fertilizer plots were treated to P. grandiflorum Ridix root, the root length showed the highest scores of 26.9 and 26.5 cm, respectively. Root width exhibited the highest scores of 25.6 mm and 25.2 mm in 50% mixed organic and chemical fertilizer plots, respectively. The number of fine-roots and fresh weight presented the highest values in 50% mixed organic fertilizer plot as 26.7 and 50.4 g, respectively. The content of platycodin D3 was ranged in 183.4~321.7 mg/100 g, which the highest value was observed in 100% mixed organic fertilizer plot. The content of saponin except for deapioplatycodin D presented higher amount in the mixed organic fertilizer plots. Treatment of 200% chemical fertilizer presented to be withered in transplant cultivation of 3 year-old roots.
This research was conducted to investigate the influence of application rate of liming fertilizers on changes in soil chemical properties and growth of 'Red Madness' petunia in plug production. To achieve this, dolomite (DO) with 0, 1.0, 3.5, 8.0 or 13.0 $g{\cdot}L^{-1}$ and calcium carbonate (CC) with 0, 2.0, 2.5, 3.0, 3.5, or 4.0 $g{\cdot}L^{-1}$ were incorporated into peatmoss + vermiculite (1:1, v/v) during the root substrates formulation. The treatments of 3.5 $g{\cdot}L^{-1}$ of DO and 2.5 or 3.0 $gL^{-1}$ of CC had acceptable ranges of pH and EC in soil solution such as 5.6~6.2 and 0.7~1.0 $dS{\cdot}m^{-1}$, respectively. The faster rising of pH was observed in root media containing CC rather than those of DO. This indicates that the solubility of CC is higher than DO. The soil Ca concentrations in all treatments of CC were 1.8 times as high as those of DO. The treatments of 3.5 or 8.0 $g{\cdot}L^{-1}$ of DO had the highest soil Mg concentrations, but all treatments of CC had lower soil Mg concentrations than control treatment indicating that additional application of Mg fertilizers are required. The elevated application rate of DO or CC resulted in the increase of fresh and dry weight. But plant heights were not influenced by application of liming fertilizers. The results of tissue analysis showed that application of DO or CC influenced the $PO_4{^-}P$, Ca and Mg contents, but not influenced the contents of other nutrients such as N, P, Fe, Mn, Zn and Cu.
The degradation of fungicide oxadixyl in soil amended with manure, chemical fertilizers, heavy metals and detergent was studied. The degradation of oxadixyl in the soil was slow, but became to be fast after the lag phase of about 14 days. The half-life was 10.5 days. The degradation rate was accelerated largely by the amendment of manure. Potassium also promoted the degradation rate but nitrogen and phosphate did not. The heavy metals inhibited the degradation rate, in order of Ni, Cd, Cr, Cu, and Zn. The degradation rate was declined greatly with the addition of synthetic detergent. The microbial biomass and the respiration rate in the soil were increased by the amendment of manure and chemical fertilizers, but decreased by the addition of heavy metals and cleaner. The degradation rate of oxadixyl was positively correlated with the microbial biomass and the respiration rate.
