  • Utilization of biomass resources has considerable contribution to the reduction of carbon dioxide emission. Ethanol is one of the biomass products and is used as an additive to gasoline in several countries. Conventional process to produce ethanol involves energy-intensive azeotropic distillation. Pervaporation (PV) or vapor permeation (VP) is considered to be an alternative separation process to the conventional process.(omitted)

  • Separation of optical isomers of some derivatives of amino acids by reversed-phase HPLC has been accomplished by adding a chelate of an optically active amino acid to copper(Ⅱ) to the mobile phase. Cu(Ⅱ) complexes of L-proline and L-hydroxyproline in the mobile phase showed different degrees of separation. Optical isomers of DNS derivatives of amino acids are selectively separated, but those of several other derivatives are not at all. The kinds of buffer agents, the pH, and the concentrations of acetonitrile and the Cu(Ⅱ) ligand all affect the separations. The elution behavior between D and L DNS-amino acids appears to depend on the alkyl side chain of the amino acids. A chromatographic mechanism is proposed that is based on a stereospecificity of the formation of ternary complexes by the D, L-DNS-amino acids and the chiral additive associated with the stationary phase. The steric effects of the ligand exchange reactions are related with the feasibility of cis and/or trans attack of the amino acids to the binary chiral chelate retained on the stationary phase.

  • HEMA (2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate), EGDMA (ethylene glycol dimethacrylate) and propylene glycol was copolymerized in the presence of AIBN (azobisisobutyronitrile) initiator in a mould. The physical properties of the contact lens were measured. The water content of 37.06~38.71%, refractive index of 1.492~1.432, visible transmittance of 89.4~91.5%, tensile strength of 0.1416~0.2302 kgf, and contact angle of $38.60{\sim}53.53^{\circ}$ were obtained. Therefore, the contact lens material produced using propylene glycol as an additive satisfied the basic physical properties required for contact lenses application. It is interesting to note that an increase in wettability and tensile strength while having no significant changes in water content.

  • A sensitive, selective and rapid method has been developed for the determination of mercury based on the rapid reaction of mercury(II) with p-sulfobenzylidenethiorhodanine (SBDTR) and the solid phase extraction of the colored chelate with $C_{18}$ disks. In the presence of pH 3.5 sodium acetate-acetic acid buffer solution and Emulsifier-OP medium, SBDTR reacts with mercury(II) to form a red chelate of a molar ratio 1 : 2 (mercury to SBDTR). This chelate was prconcentrated by solid phase extraction with $C_{18}$ disks. An enrichment factor of 50 was achieved. The molar absorptivity of the chelate is $1.28{\times}10^5 L{\cdot}mol^{-1}{\cdot}cm^{-1}$ at 545 nm in measured solution. Beer's law is obeyed in the range of 0.01-3 ${\mu}$g/mL. The relative standard deviation for eleven replicates sample of 0.01 ${\mu}$g/mL is 1.65%. This method was applied to the determination of mercury in tobacco and tobacco additive with good results.

  • Small angle light scattering and field emission scanning electron microscope have been used to quantify the kinetics of liquid-liquid separation behavior during water vapor(RH52%[$\pm$3%] at 27$^{\circ}C$) quenching (non-solvent induced phase separation, NIPS) of polysulfone/NMP/Alcohol and CPVC/THF/Alcohol, respectively. Time dependence of the position of the light scattering maximum was observed at polysufone dope solutions, confirming spinodal secomposition (SD). while CPVC dope solutions showed a decreased scattered light intensity with a increased q-valuel, indicating nucleation & growth (NG). For the each system, domain growth rate in the intermediate and late stage of phase separation decreased with increasing the number of carbon of alcohol used as additive (non-solvent). Also, in the early stage for SD, the scattering intensity with time was in accordance with Cahns linear theory of spinodal decomposition,[1-3] regardless of types of non-solvent additive.

  • The use of the coal ash for surcharge material, in a view of the environmental aspect, can decrease amount of the reclamation through recycling waste materials as well as prevent a destruction of the ecosystem attributed to sand picking. In addition, it can reduce both unit cost of material and construction expenses. In this study, new construction material as alternative surcharge material using coal ash, which is by-product from thermoelectric power plant, were developed. Mixing ratios of fly ash and bottom ash derived from the coal ash in Samchunpo thermoelectric power plants were determined. Furthermore, mixing conditions depending on the ratios of the cement and gypsum used for chemical additive were determined too. Uniaxial compression strength tests were conducted at different mixing conditions and Design graph of optimum mixing ratio at each required strength for economic efficiency is indicated in this paper.

  • To use fly ash as an additive for concrete, authors collected 15 kinds of domestic fly ashes and tested the chemical compositions and physical properties of the fly ashes. Fluidity of the fly ash paste was also investigated. The result shows that the chemical compositions of the fly ashes were in the range of regulation of Korean Industrial Standards except ignition loss and the following relationships in fly ash were studied; specific surface and residue in standard sieve, specific surface and unit weight, residue in standard sieve and ignition loss. For the given flow properties, fly ash paste required higher water-binder ratio than cement paste.

  • An improved HPLC method for the separation of madecassoside isomers (madecassoside and asiaticoside-B) has been developed. The isomers can be separated with high resolution from extracts of Centella asiatica by HPLC using $\beta$-cyclodextrin as a mobile phase added on a $C_{18}$ column. The result shows that the isomers can be separated with a mobile phase consisting of methanol:water (50:50, v/v) with 4 mmol/L $\beta$-CD. To elucidate the mechanism of the separation of madecassoside and asiaticoside-B, this paper studied the separation of their aglycon parts (madecassic acid and terminolic acid), another pair of isomers. The isomers can also be separated with high resolution with a mobile phase consisting of methanol:water (65:35, v/v) with 4 mmol/L $\beta$-CD and the pH of the mobile phase was adjusted to 4. The paper also studied the separation of the two isomers by HPLC using $\alpha$-CD and Glucosyl-$\beta$-CD as a mobile phase additive in order to elucidate the mechanism of the separation process.

  • Abstract To modify brittleness among the properties of thermosetting epoxy resin, a reactive additive. succinonitrile(SN) was introduced to Diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A(DGEBA)-4, 4'-methylene dianiline (MDA) system. Fracture behavior was microscopically studied during breaking of composite materials. As a result, post debond friction energy was the most significant for breaking the composite having glass fibres, pull-out energy was the next significant and debonding energy was the last. It was observed that shear stress between glass fibre and epoxy matrix was main factor for fracture behavior. Reactive additive, SN made shear stress deteriorated.

  • Aminolysis of various carboxyl-containing ester substrates by triamines was kinetically studied in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) in the presence of p-toluenesulfonic acid (TSA) or in the presence of sulfuric acid and potassium iodide (KI). In the presence of TSA or KI, the pseudo-first-order rate constants ($k_o$) were proportional to the total amine concentration ($N_o$). This stands in marked contrast with the corresponding reactions carried out with sulfuric acid added as the sole additive, in which saturation kinetic behavior of ko with respect to No was manifested. This indicates that complex formation between the ester substrate and the amine is greatly suppressed by the addition of TSA or KI. The second-order rate constants obtained in the presence of TSA or KI were substantially greater than those measured in the absence of any additive. These kinetic features were explained in terms of tight interaction between the protonated amines with I- or TSA-. Thus, the results were related to the hydrogen bonding that involves DMSO, bisulfate ion, I-, TSA-, and the protonated forms of triamines.
