A novel solid-contact indium(III)-selective sensor based on bis-(1H-benzimidazole-5-methoxy-2-[(4-methoxy-3, 5-dimethyl-1-pyridinyl) 2-methyl]) thiosulfinate, known as an omeprazole dimer (OD) and a neutral ionophore, was constructed, and its performance characteristics were evaluated. The sensor was prepared by applying a membrane cocktail containing the ionophore to a graphite rod pre-coated with polyethylene dioxythiophene (PEDOT) conducting polymer as the ion-to-electron transducer. The membrane contained 3.6% OD, 2.3% oleic acid (OA) and 62% dioctyl phthalate (DOP) as the solvent mediator in PVC and produced a good potentiometric response to indium(III) ions with a Nernstian slope of 19.09 mV/decade. The constructed sensor possessed a linear concentration range from $3{\times}10^{-7}$ to $1{\times}10^{-2}$ M and a lower detection limit (LDL) of $1{\times}10^{-7}$ M indium(III) over a pH range of 4.0-7.0. It also displayed a fast response time and good selectivity for indium(III) over several other ions. The sensor can be used for longer than three months without any considerable divergence in potential. The sensor was utilized for direct and flow injection potentiometric (FIP) determination of indium(III) in alloys. The parameters that control the flow injection method were optimized. Indium(III) was quantitatively recovered, and the results agreed with those obtained using atomic absorption spectrophotometry, as confirmed by the f and t values. The sensor was also utilized as an indicator electrode for the potentiometric titration of fluoride in the presence of chloride, bromide, iodide and thiocyanate ions using indium(III) nitrate as the titrant.

A quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) sensor system for the detection of odorants, especially environmental pollutant, has been constructed by depositing various phospholipids, activated carbon and lead compound pigment onto the surface of the QCM. The characteristics of a QCM operating at 9 MHz deposited with phosphatidyl- choline were analysed. An explanation is given for different odorant affinities based on the monolayer properties of phospholipids. The identification of odorants is discussed in terms of a comparison of their normalized resonant frequency shift patterns and relative response intensities calculated from the response areas. Applying the lead compound pigment coated QCM, it was possible to detect sulfur compound specifically. Using a number of different lipid-coated QCMs, odorants could be identified by comparing the response patterns.
Recently, developments of process monitoring system in order to detect and diagnose process abnormalities has got the spotlight in process systems engineering. Normal data obtained from processes provide available information of process characteristics to be used for modeling, monitoring, and control. Since modern chemical and environmental processes have high dimensionality, strong correlation, severe dynamics and nonlinearity, it is not easy to analyze a process through model-based approach. To overcome limitations of model-based approach, lots of system engineers and academic researchers have focused on statistical approach combined with multivariable analysis such as principal component analysis (PCA), partial least squares (PLS), and so on. Several multivariate analysis methods have been modified to apply it to a chemical process with specific characteristics such as dynamics, nonlinearity, and so on.This paper discusses about missing value estimation and sensor fault identification based on process variable reconstruction using dynamic PCA and canonical variate analysis.
This study investigated sensitivity of the gas sensor to chemical weapons with the sensor material doped with catalysts. The nano-sized SnO2 powder mixed with metal oxides (TiO2) was doped with transition metals(Pt, Pd and In). Thick film of nano-sized SnO2 powder with TiO2 was prepared by screen-printing method onto Al2O3 substrates with platinum electrode and chemical precipitation method. The physical and chemical properties of sensor material were investigated by SEM/EDS, XRD and BET analyzers. The measured sensitivity to simulant toxic gas is defined as the percentage of resistance of value equation, [(Ra-Rg)/$Ra\;{\times}100$)], that of the resistance(Ra) of SnO2 film in air and the resistance(Rg) of SnO2 film in acetonitrile gas. The best sensitivity and selectivity of these thick film were shown with 1wt.% Pd and 1wt.% TiO2 for acetonitile gas at the operating temperature of $250^{\circ}C$.

A development of surface acoustic wave gas sensor to detecting volatile gas has been observed by monitoring output signal as function of time onto the network analyzer. The SAW sensor with a center frequency of 200MHz was fabricated on $42^{\circ}$ S-T Quartz substrates. Using the gas chromatography column has been selectivity. Experimental results, which show the phase change of output signal under the absorption of volatile gas onto sensors, were presented. The proposed sensor has the properties of high sensitivity compare to the conventional SAW gas sensor and chemical selectivity. Thus, it is thought these results are applicable for use in sensor array of an high performance electronic nose system.
A novel poly(safranine)-modified electrode has been constructed for the determination of 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) in natural water sample. The electrochemical behavior of poly(safranine) film electrode and its electrocatalytic activity toward 4-NP were studied in detail by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and adsorptive linear stripping voltammetry (LSV). All experimental parameters were optimized and LSV was proposed for its determination. In optimal working conditions, the reduction current of 4-NP at this poly(safranine)-modified electrode exhibited a good linear relationship with 4-NP concentration in the range of $8.0{\times}10^{-8}$ to $4.0{\times}10^{-5}mol\;L^{-1}$. The detection limit was $3.0{\times}10^{-8}mol\;L^{-1}$. The high sensitivity and selectivity of the sensor were demonstrated by its practical application for the determination of trace amounts of 4-NP in natural water and fruit samples.
The degree of supersaturation is an important measure for the operation of crystallization processes, because it is directly related to the control of crystal size distribution and shape. A conventional technique utilizing solution composition and temperature has a variety of problems caused from the measurement error and the handling of analyzing samples. A monitoring system of the supersaturation using a quartz crystal sensor is proposed here, and its performance is examined applying different manipulations of coolant temperature. The experimental outcome and photographic examination indicate that the measurements of resonant frequency and resistance of the sensor can be used for the prediction of the formation and growth of solid crystal from the crystallization process. The monitoring system eliminates the intrinsic error source of the conventional system to give the improved measurement and on-line application availability.
The partial-discharge(PD) is accompanied by physical and chemical phenomena, such as heat, light, noise gas, chemical transformation, electric current, and electromagnetic radiation. The PD can be detected by measuring one of these changes. Although some techniques are employed in this purpose, several obstacles interfere with an on-line measurement. Now, a fiber-optic sensor for detecting ultrasonics is suggested for the on line measurement system with high accuracy. This paper describes the basic principles fiber-optic sensor for ultrasonic measurement.
