We utilize Sloan Digital Sky Survey DR7 spectroscopic data of ~340 star forming galaxies in the Virgo cluster to investigate their chemical properties depending on the environments. The chemical evolution of galaxies is linked to their star formation histories (SFHs), as well as to the gas interchange in different environments. In this sense, galaxy metallicity could be an observable parameter providing information on the impact of the environment on the galaxy SFH and/or the galaxy gas content. Thus, we derived gaseous metallicity (e.g., oxygen abundance) of star forming galaxies located in different regions of the Virgo cluster using well-known empirical calibrations. We also estimated their star formation rate (SFR) using H alpha luminosity. Inorder to investigate the chemical properties of these galaxies, we examined relations between various parameters: metallicity vs. luminosity, SFR vs. luminosity, and metallicity vs. cluster-centric radius. From our results, we discuss environmental effects of cluster to the chemical properties of star forming galaxies.

In this work, the electrical and thermal properties of polyimide/multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWNT) nanocomposites were investigated. The polyimide/MWNT nanocomposites contained from 0 to 2.0 wt % of MWNT. The electrical properties of the polyimide films were characterized by a specific resistance measurement. The thermal properties were evaluated using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and a differential scanning calorimeter (DSC). It was found that the thermal properties of the polyimide nanocomposites increased with increasing MWNT content and specific resistance as well. This result indicated that the crosslinking of polyimide/MWNT nanocomposites was enhanced by good distribution of the MWNT in the polyimide resins, resulting in the increase of the electrical and thermal properties of the nanocomposites.

In recent times, polymeric foams have been popularly used in various applications. To meet the demand for these applications, polymer foams with excellent mechanical and thermal properties are required. In particular, silicone foam has gained significant attention owing to its superior thermal properties and low density. In this study, the mechanical and thermal properties of silicone foams filled with wollastonite were investigated. A maximum tensile strength of 98.3 kPa was obtained by adding 15 phr of wollastonite. The specific gravity did not exhibit a marked difference up to 10 phr, but it increased substantially above 15 phr wollastonite. Thermogravimetric analysis indicated that adding wollastonite to the silicone foam increased both the amount of residue and the thermal decomposition temperature. The morphologies of the silicone foams filled with wollastonite were observed by scanning electron microscopy.
The biometry, morphological properties and chemical composition of bagasse, corn, sunflower, rice, and rapeseed residues plants were analyzed. The results revealed differences in biometry properties and chemical composition of the different types of agricultural resides investigated. The greatest proportion of fiber length (1.32 mm) and cellulose (55.56%) was found in residues of bagasse plants, with a low ash (1.78%) and lignin (20.5%). The lignin of all types of agricultural resides was less than hardwood and softwood. In addition, the rice and rapeseed residues plants had highest amount of ash and extractive component. The slenderness and flexibility ratios of the all types of agricultural resides fibers were similar to some of hardwood and softwood species.
Styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) is widely used in tire treads due to its excellent abrasion resistance, braking performance, and reasonable cost. Depending on the polymerization method, SBR is classified into solution-polymerized SBR (SSBR) and emulsion-polymerized SBR (ESBR). ESBR is less expensive and environmentally friendlier than SSBR because it uses water as a solvent. A higher molecular weight is also easier to obtain in ESBR, which has advantages in mechanical properties and tire performance. In ESBR polymerization, a surfactant is added to create an emulsion system with a hydrophobic monomer in the water phase. However, some amount of surfactant remains in the ESBR during coagulation, making the polymer chains in micelles clump together. As a result, it is well-known that residual surfactant adversely affects the physical properties of silica-filled ESBR compounds. However, researches about the effect of residual surfactant on the physical properties of ESBR are lacking. Therefore, in this study we compared the effects of remaining surfactant in ESBR on the mechanical properties of silica-filled and carbon black-filled compounds. The crosslinking density and filler-rubber interaction are also analyzed by using the Flory-Rehner theory and Kraus equation. In addition, the effects of surfactant on the mechanical properties and crosslinking density are compared with the effects of TDAE oil (a conventional processing aid).

To simulate a process model in the field of chemical engineering, it is very important to identify the physical properties of novel materials as well as existing materials. However, it is difficult to measure the physical properties throughout a set of experiments due to the potential risk and cost. To address this, this study aims to develop a property prediction model based on the group contribution method for aromatic chemical compounds including benzene rings. The benzene rings of aromatic materials have a significant impact on their physical properties. To establish the prediction model, 42 important functional groups that determine the physical properties are considered, and the total numbers of functional groups on 147 aromatic chemical compounds are counted to prepare a dataset. Support vector regression is employed to prepare a prediction model to handle sparse and high-dimensional data. To verify the efficacy of this study, the results of this study are compared with those of previous studies. Despite the different datasets in the previous studies, the comparison indicated the enhanced performance in this study. Moreover, there are few reports on predicting the physical properties of aromatic compounds. This study can provide an effective method to estimate the physical properties of unknown chemical compounds and contribute toward reducing the experimental efforts for measuring physical properties.

Alternative way of shaping fibers suitable for papermaking was introduced. Impact refining, which was done simply by hitting wet fibers with a metal weight vertically, was intended to keep the fibers from shortening and to cause mostly internal fibrillation. Virgin chemical pulp, its recycled one and OCC were used in the experiment. It was noticed from the experiment that impact refining on virgin chemical pulp kept the fiber length and increased bonding properties greatly. However, in the recycled fibers from the chemical pulp, fiber length and bonding properties were decreased. In OCC, which seems to contain fractions of semi-chemical pulp and mechanical pulp (GP), and which is recycled pulp from corrugated boxes, fiber length and bonding properties were decreased disastrously. We believe recycled cellulosic fibers (recycled chemical pulp and OCC in this case), which went through hornification, were less resistant to the mechanical impact than virgin chemical pulp. For virgin chemical pulp, impact refining allowed no significant fiber length shortening, high WRV, and high mechanical strength.
To investigate the effect of preparing condition on the physical properties of carbon nanotubes suitable for optical applications, carbon nanotubes were synthesized by thermal chemical vapor deposition using Ni particles as a catalyst on stainless steel substrate and acetylene as a reactant gas. To examine the physical and optical properties, SEM, TEM, Ram an, UV-visible, and photoluminescence spectroscopy were used. The physical properties of carbon nanotubes such as diameter, degree of growth density and morphology were closely related to such experimental conditions as Ni particle size, growing pressure, and etching condit on of Ni particles, it appeared from the light absorbance and photoluminescence spectra of carbon nanotube mixture prepared with an addition of a photopolymer, P3HT(Poly(3-hexylthIop hene)) that carbon nanotube could do a role as a kind of electron acceptor for solar cell application.

Recently, it is very necessary the development of the manufacturing techniques for high strength concrete(HSC) for the large-scale size and good quality of civil structure. But, the manufacture and quality control of HSC of which shrinkage, heat of hydration and workability at construction filed are considered, is very difficult due to its low water-cement ratio and high quantity of unit cement content. In the present study, we tried to know and assess the influences of chemical and physical properties of cement on the material properties of HSC. We analyzed basic properties of 4 kinds of cement whose chemical and physical properties are different each other through various tests such as chemical analysis and mortal test. Also, we performed the assessment of the material properties of HSC for each dement by the test for the conditions of same mix design and similar compressive strength. From the results in the study, the assessment of the important quality factors of cement influencing the properties of HSC may be utilized to quality control of applied cement to manufacture the HSC of high quality.
