Rubber hoses for automobile radiators are apt to degraded and thus failed due to the influence of contacting stresses of air and coolant liquid under thermal and mechanical loadings. The aging behaviors of the skin part of the hoses due to thermo-oxidative and electro-chemical stresses were experimentally analyzed. Through the thermo-oxidative aging test, it was shown that the surface hardness IRHD(International Rubber Hardness Degrees) of the rubber increased with a considerable reduction of failure strain as the aging time and temperature were large. On account of the penetration of coolant liquid into the skin part the weight of rubber specimens influenced by electro-chemical degradation (ECD) test increased, whereas their failure strain and IRHD hardness decreased. The hardness decreased further as the test site on the hose skin approached to the negative pole.
Starch-polyethylene films containing high molecular weight(NW) oxidized-polyethylene and prooxidant were prepared , and thermal -and bio-degradability of the films were determined. Increased levels of starch resulted in a corresponding reduction in mechanical strength of the films. However, the addition of high MW oxidized-polyethylene did not significantly reduce the percent elongation of the films. Thefilms containing high MW oxidized-polyethylene andproosicant were degreaded faster than those containing no aadditive during the heat treatment. The films lost their measureable mechanical properties when their weight-average MW(Mw) fell below 50,000. Biodegradability of the films was determined by a pure culture assay with either Streptomyces badius 252.S. setonii 75Vi2 or S. viridosporous T7A, and by an extracellulr enzyme assay using S. setonii 75vi2. The results from pure culture assay indicated that biomass accumulation on the film surface inhibited chemical and biological degradation of the films. The extracellular enzyme assay demonstrated decrease of percent elongation and increase of carbonyl index of the films. Therefore, extracellular enzyme assay could be used as a good method to evaluate biodegradability of the films.

The estimation of the remaining life for the aged components in power plant as well as chemical and petroleum plants has been recently concerned. The raw materials used in this study are the 1Cr-1Mo-0.25V steel which intensified P and S compositions along with the nominal compositions of ASTM A 470 standard. Five kinds of specimens with the different degradation levels were prepared by isothermal aging heat treatment at 630.deg.C. The mechanical properties and rotated bending fatigue strength of virgin and aged 1Cr-1Mo-0.25V steel have been investigated through the hardness, tensile, fatigue test, SEM fractograph and EDS analysis at 538.deg.C and room temperature, respectively. Thus the data of aged specimens were compared with those of virgin specimen to evaluate the aging effects. The main results obtained in this study are as follows ; The decrease of the yield and tensile strength due to degradation was distinguished until 50, 000hrs simulated service time. And it was confirmed that the considerable amount of P, Mn, Cr and S was precipitated at the grain boundary of aged material through the SEM and EDS analysis. The rotated bendingd fatigue strength at 538.deg.C of virgin, 25, 000, 50, 000, 75, 000 and 100, 000 hrs aged material was decreased 44.6 %, 49.6 %, 51.5 %, 52.4% and 53.8% than that of virgin material at 10$_{7}$cycles of room temperature, respectively. The major cracks of virgin and aged materials mainly initiated at the inclusions including Si, P and Mn compositions which were located at the outer periphery of the specimen.n.
As a fundamental experimental study for reliability improvement of lithium ion secondary battery, degradation mechanism was investigated by microscopic observation and acoustic emission monitoring. Microstructural observation of the decomposed battery after cycle test revealed mechanical and chemical damages such as interface delamination, microcrack of the electrodes, and solid electrolyte interphase (SEI). Acoustic emission (AE) signal was detected during charge and discharge of lithium ion battery to investigate relationships among cumulative count, discharge capacity, and microdamages. With increasing number of cycle, discharge capacity was decreased and AE cumulative count was observed to increase. Observed damages were attributed to sources of the detected AE signals.
Ta2O5 alloying into 3 mol% Y2O3-stabilized tetragonal ZrO2 polycrystals (3Y-TZP) increased the degradation during aging at 265℃ and the fracture toughness; both are determined by the amount of transformed m-ZrO2. It was proposed that the mechanism underlying the t→m transformation when aged at low temperatures is attributed to the reorientation of (Zzr'V ). complexes parallel to [111] lattice direction, which is accompanied by a relaxation of TZP lattice during annealing at low temperature. A small strain which results from the reorientation gives rise to a localized mechanical instability, thus lowering the nucleation barrier so that the t→m phase transformation (degradation) proceeds. The amount of transformed m-ZrO2 during aging becomes greater as the chemical free energy change related to the transformation, ΔGo, increases with increasing the Ta2O5 alloying content.
Fretting is a potential degradation mechanism of structural components and equipments exposed to various environments and loading conditions. The fretting degradation, for example, can be observed in equipments of nuclear, fossil as well as petroleum chemical plants exposed to special environments and loading conditions. It is well known that a cast stainless steel(CF8M) used in a primary reactor coolant(RCS) degrades seriously when that material is exposed to temperature range ken $290^{\circ}C{\sim}390^{\circ}C$ for long period. This degradation can be resulted into a catastrophical failure of components. In the present paper, the characteristics of the fretting fatigue are investigated using the artificially aged CF8M specimen. The specimen of CF8M are prepared by an artificially accelerated aging technique holding 1800hr at $430^{\circ}C$ respectively. Through the investigations, the simple fatigue endurance limit of the virgin specimen is not altered from that obtained from the fatigue tests imposed the fretting fatigue. The similar tests are performed using the degraded specimen. The results are not changed from those of the virgin specimen. The significant effects of fretting fatigue imposed on both virgin and degraded specimen on the fatigue strength are not found.

According to thermal degradation on power transformers, it is known that electrical, mechanical and chemical characteristics for power transformer's oil-paper are changed. In the chemical property, especially, when the kraft paper is aged, the cellulose polymer chains break down into shorter lengths. It causes decrease in both tensile strength and degree of polymerization of paper insulation. Also the paper breakdown is accompanied by an increase in the content of various furanic compounds within the dielectric liquid. It is known that furanic components in transformer oil come only from the decomposition of insulating paper rather than from the oil itself. Therefore the analysis of furanic degradation products provides a complementary technique to dissolved gas analysis for monitoring transformers when we evaluate the aging of insulating paper by the total concentration of carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide dissolved in oil only. Recently, the analysis of furanic compounds by high performance liquid chromatography(HPLC) using IEC 61198 method for estimating degradation of paper insulation in power transformers has been used more conveniently for assessment of oil-paper. It is know that the main products which is produced by aging are 2-furfuryl alcohol, 2-furaldehyde(furfural), 2-furoic acid, 2-acetylfuran, 5-methyl-2-furaldehyde, and 5-hydroxymethyl-2-furaldehyde. For investigating the accelerated aging process of oil-paper samples we manufactured accelerating aging equipment and we estimated variation of insulations at $140^{\circ}C$ temp. during 500 hours. Typical transformer proportions of copper, silicon steel and iron have been added to oil-paper insulation during the aging process. The oil-paper insulation samples have been measured at intervals of 100 hours. Finally we have analyzed that 2-furoic acid and 2-acetylfuran products of furanic compounds were detected by HPLC, and their concentrations were increased with accelerated aging time.
Material degradation such as high temperature oxidation of metallic material is a severe problem in energy generation systems or manufacturing industries. The metallic materials are oxidized to form oxide films in high temperature environments. The oxide films act as diffusion barriers of oxygen and metal ions and thereafter decrease oxidation rates of metals. The metal oxidation is, however, accelerated by mechanical fracture and spalling of the oxide films caused by thermal stresses by repetition of temperature change, vibration and by the impact of solid particles. It is therefore very important to investigate mechanical properties and adhesion of oxide films in high temperature environments, as well as the properties in a room temperature environment. The oxidation tests were conducted for Ni and Ni-Co alloy under high temperature corrosive environments. The hardness distributions against the indentation depth from the top surface were examined at room temperature. Dynamic indentation tests were performed on Ni oxide films formed on Ni surfaces at room and high temperature to observe fractures or cracks generated around impact craters. As a result, it was found that the mechanical property as hardness of the oxide films were different between Ni and Ni-Co alloy, and between room and high temperatures, and that the adhesion of Ni oxide films was relatively stronger than that of Co oxide films.
Commonly, the flocculant is dissolved in process or recycle water in industrial plant which has many ionic materials. Therefore, the polymer degradation in aqueous solution by chemical, mechanical or bacteriological may occur, sometimes rapidly. Even if the same flocculant is dissolved, the flocculation characteristics and the properties of dissolving polymer varied with the kind of dissolving water. In this study, we try to estimate the interaction between flocculants and ionic materials in dissolving water using self inversing emulsion polymer; polyacrylamide-co-trimethyl ammonium ethyl acrylate chloride flocculants which have varying molecular weights and structures at a several conditions. The polymeric flocculant is dissolved in artificial dissolving water with Potassium Chloride (PC), Calcium Chloride anhydrous (CC), Potassium Hydroxide (PH), Sodium Chloride (SC), Sodium Bromate (SB) and Iron (II) Sulfate Heptahydrate (IS) as ionic sources. Experimental results indicate that the cationic and anionic ions in dissolving water induce the hydrolysis, degradation of cationic functional group and uncoiling of polymeric flocculants, therefore, the flocculation efficiency decreased by undesired polymer. According that result, it is important to estimate not only its structures and physical properties but also the qualities of dissolving water to optimize the efficiency.

It was known that oil-filled transformer's life depended on insulating paper which was applied to transformers for insulating of transformer. Therefore when paper was aged, its electrical, mechanical and chemical characteristics were changed. Especially if operating temperature was high, paper was quickly damaged. As cellulose paper which was mainly used for solid insulation of transformers was degraded, the cellulose polymer chains broke down into shorter lengths and gases such as CO, $CO_2$, $CH_4$, $C_2H_4$ and so on were produced from paper. Also by-product known as furan compounds were producted from paper and it were dissolved within insulating oil. In this paper accelerating aging cell was aged during 60 hours at 100, 150, 180 and $200^{\circ}C$, respectively, so evaluating the chemical characteristics of cellulose paper by thermal. An it were performed analysis such as tensile strength(TS), dissolved gas analysis(DGA) and high performance liquid chromatography(HPLC). Also for analyzing of correlation between insulating degradation characteristics, it was performed linear regression method as statistical treatment.
