The degradation of Nafion membrane by hydrogen peroxide was investigated in polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC). Degradation tests were carried out in a solution of $10{\sim}30%$ hydrogen peroxide containing 4ppm $Fe^{2+}$ ion which is well known as Fenton's reagent at $80^{\circ}C$ for 48hr. Characterization of degraded membranes were examined through the IR, Water-uptake, Ion exchange capacity, mechanical strength and $H_2$ permeability. After degradation, C-F, S-O and C-O chemical bonds of membrane were broken by radical formed by $H_2O_2$ decomposition. Breaking of C-F bond which is the membrane backbone reduced the mechanical strength of Nafion membrane and hence induced pinholes, resulting in increase of $H_2$ crossover through the membrane. Also the decomposition of C-O and S-O, side chain and terminal bond of membrane, decreased the ion exchange capacity of the membrane.

In this study, the effects of heat and radiation on the degradation behaviour of fluoroelastomer under simulated normal operation and a severe accident environment were investigated using sequential testing of gamma irradiation and thermal degradation. Tensile properties and Shore A hardness were measured, and thermogravimetric analysis was used to evaluate the degradation behaviour of fluoroelastomer. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy were used to characterize the structural changes of the fluoroelastomer. Heat and radiation generated in nuclear power plant break and deform the chemical bonds, and fluoroelastomer exposed to these environments have decreased C-H and functional groups that contain oxygen and double bonds such as C-O, C=O and C=C were generated. These functional groups were formed by auto oxidation by reacting free radicals generated from the cleaved bond with oxygen in the atmosphere. In this auto oxidation reaction, crosslinks were generated where bonded to each other, and the mobility of molecules was decreased, and as a result, the fluoroelastomer was hardened. This hardening behaviour occurred more significantly in the severe accident environment than in the normal operation condition, and it was found that thermal stability decreased with the generation of unstable structures by crosslinking.
In CPB(Cold-Pad-Batch) dyeing, the rubber of the padder roll is influenced by the heat, chemical and mechanical influences and thus aging of the padder roll rubber occurs. This study presents an accelerated thermal aging test of the CPB padder roll rubber with strong alkali conditions. Using Arrhenius formula of the various property values for the various aging temperatures($80^{\circ}C$, $90^{\circ}C$, $100^{\circ}C$) of the padder roll, the accelerated life predictions could be calculated. The threshold value of the property was set at different values. The hardness was set at the point where 5% degradation occurs based on the actual use conditions, and the tensile strength was set at the point where 50% degradation occurs based on the general life prediction standards. From the results of the different physical properties at differing temperatures, the Arrhenius plot could be obtained. Through the usage of the Arrhenius Equation, significant duration expectation could be predicted, and the chemical aging behavior of the CPB padder roll could be found at the arbitrary and actual temperatures.

Fretting is a potential degradation mechanism of structural components and equipments exposed to various environments and loading conditions. The fretting degradation, for example, for example, can be observed in equipments of nuclear, fossil as well as petroleum chemical plants exposed to special environments and loading conditions. It is well known that a cast stainless steel(CF8M) used in a primary reactor coolant(RCS) degrades seriously when that material is exposed to temperature range from 290$\^{C}$∼390$\^{C}$ for long period. This degradation can be resulted into a catastrophical failure of components. In the present paper, the characteristics of the fretting fatigue are investigated using the artificially aged CF8M specimen. The specimen of CF8M are prepared by an artificially accelerated aging technique holding 180hr at 430$\^{C}$ respectively. Through the investigations, the simple fatigue endurance limit of the virgin specimen is not altered from that obtained from the fatigue tests imposed the fretting fatigue. The similar tests are performed using the degraded specimen. The results are not changed from those of the virgin specimen. The significant effects of fretting fatigue imposed on both virgin and degraded specimen on the fatigue strength are not found.

The environment degradation of structural steel under high temperature is one of the key phenomena governing the availability and life of plant. This degradation resulted from the microstructural changes due to the long exposure at high temperature affect the mechanical properties such as creep strength and toughness. For instance, boiler tube materials usually tend to degrade, after long term operation, by precipitates, spherodizing, coarsening, and change in chemical composition of carbides. In this study, the material degradation under high temperature exposure was investigated by evaluating the carbide precipitation. The electrochemical polarization method was facilitated to investigate the precipitation and coarsening of carbides. It was shown by the modified electrochemical potentiokinetic reactivation (EPR) tests that the passivation of Mo-rich carbides did not occur even in the anodic peak current (Ip) which indicates the precipitation of Mo$_{6}$C was also observed. And it was assured that special electrolytic cell assembled in this research can be used for the detection of Mo$_{6}$C precipitation in the field.eld.
This paper studied the possibility to predict a mechanical property variation from changes in created carbonyl bands by irradiating the surface of high-density polyethylene with short-wavelength ultraviolet radiation of 254 nm to induce a fast chemical degradation. The meaning of this study lies in checking whether a mechanical property change with the same chemical property as the induced optical deterioration is caused by using a UVC lamp with high photon energy instead of optical deterioration via xenon arc light source and outdoor exposure test via natural sunlight requiring a long time. The mechanical strength of high-density polyethylene checked by a tensile test and a creep destruction test showed a similar tendency with CI changes. In particular, the yield strength and elongation had a close relationship with the exposure time to ultraviolet radiation. Accordingly, this paper presented a method to grasp the mechanical property change outdoors requiring a long time more fast through the relationship between the mechanical property change and the carbonyl index using a UVC lamp causing the fast surface degradation.

Coolant rubber hoses for automotive radiators can degrade under thermal and mechanical loadings and thus fail owing to the influences of locally formed electricity. In this study, an advanced test method was developed to simulate the failure of a rubber hose. The aging behavior of carbon-black-filled ethylene-propylene diene monomer (EPDM) rubber used as a radiator hose material under a combination of electrochemical stresses and tensile strain was analyzed. The changing behaviors of the current and the resistance as a function of the aging time were analyzed in consideration of the tensile strain, voltage, and aging temperature. Sectioned specimens clarified the failure mechanisms of the aged skin layer under the combined electrochemical stresses.

In this study, a series of degradation test for structural adhesives was performed to investigate the possibility of replacement of the alternative adhesives to the conventional adhesives. Four types of the adhesives were exposed to combined environmental conditions over 1000 hours at an accelerated aging tester, which can simulate natural weather conditions such temperature, moisture and ultraviolet. Mechanical and chemical properties of the adhesives were evaluated through material testing system and FT/IR spectrometer. According to the results, the conventional adhesives can be replaced by the alternative adhesives because the alternative adhesives were more stable to environmental conditions rather than the conventional adhesives.
The mechanical degradation of poly (-vinylacetate) in several mixed solvents (dioxane-n-butanol, dioxane-sec-butanol, dioxane-ethyleneglycol, dioxane-kerosene.) was studied using the capillary flow method. The velocity constant of scission reaction (k) and the limited degree of polymerization (g) were compared at the same value of [${\eta}$], which is considered as the parameter of molecular dimension of polymers in solution. As result, (k) did not change much, even if the species and the volume fraction of poor (non-) solvents changed, while the value of (g) changed according to the species of poor solvents and the value of [${\eta}$]. From the facts described above, It follows that the limited degree of polymerization (g) were affected by the composition and distribution of mixed solvent molecules around the polymer chain, and the value of $\alpha$ (at [${\eta}$] = $KM^a$) in the polymer solution.
ACSR of the catenary wires is corrosion degradation progressed by the effect of atmospheric pollution. ACSR which consists of galvanized steel stranded aluminum. The inside of Steel Reinforced is hot-dipped zinc coating steel wire and it takes charge of tension. If ACSR is exposed in atmosphere, the galvanic corrosion is occurred because it is contacted with aluminum. It is occurred the chemical reaction rapidly so that the local a defect is also occurred. If the catenary wires are exposed in atmosphere of pollution conditions, it may cause to reduce the mechanical strength by corrosion degradation and may cause to damage the wires by micro cracks. Accordingly, this study presents the effects of mechanical properties through the corrosion of ACSR.
