In order to study 2-formylpyridine dithiocarbohydrazones (DTCH's) and their Cu(II) chelates as potential effective antimicrobial agents, twelve new compounds of six DTCH's and their Cu(II) chelates were synthesized. The compositions of Cu(II) chelates were determined on the basis of the data obtained from elemental analysis, electronic and IR spectrophotometry, and other method. They were tested for antimicrobial activity in vitro against a gram-positive, seven gram-negative bacterial species and three fungal species. DTCH's exhibited high antibacterial activity against the gram-positive Staphylococcus aureus, but low activity against the various gram negative bacterial species. In contrast to DTCH'S, their Cu(II) chelates exhibited higher antibacterial activity against St. aureus, but weaker, if any, activity against the gram-negative bacterial species. Both DTCH's and their Cu(II) chelates showed relatively potent antifungal activity against Cryptococcus neoformans, but weak activity against Candida albicans and Candida pseudotropicalis.
The retention mechanism of Ni(II)-${\alpha}$-isonitroso-${\beta}$-diketone imine chelates in reversed-phase HPLC has been studied by examining the effect of temperature, mobile phase composition in acetonitrile-water mixture, and molecular structure on retention. The empirical retention equation was investigated to evaluate the properties of S (hydrophilic index). The value of the S index of the Ni(II) chelates decrease with the increasing column temperature and a linear relationship between S and log $k{_w}^{\prime}$ has been found. The results showed that the S index is influenced by the interaction between Ni(II) chelates and mobile phase. Molecular properties, van der Waals molar volume, polarizability and dipole moment, of the Ni(II) chelates were calculated by Cerius 2 program and the calculations were performed at Universal Force Field (UFF) model. The S value and log $k{_w}^{\prime}$ increase with decreasing the dipole moment of Ni(II) chelates.
An experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of supplemental copper (Cu) chelates (methionine, chitosan and yeast) on the performance, nutrient digestibility, serum IgG level, gizzard erosion, Cu content in the liver and excreta and the level of total cholesterol in breast muscle and serum of broiler chickens. Two hundred and forty hatched broiler chickens (Ross$^{(R)}$ 208) were assigned to 4 treatments: control, 100 ppm Cu in methionine chelate (Met-Cu), 100 ppm Cu in chitosan chelate (Chitosan-Cu) and 100 ppm Cu in yeast chelate (Yeast-Cu). Each treatment had six replicates of 10 (5 males+5 females) birds each. Weight gain and feed intake tended to be higher in Cu chelate treatments than the control; weight gain was significantly higher in the Met-Cu chelate treatment and feed intake was significantly higher in the Yeast-Cu chelate treatment than the control (p<0.05). Feed/gain was significantly different between treatments in which Met-Cu was lowest followed by the control, Chitosan-Cu and Yeast-Cu. DM availability was increased by Cu chelates among which chitosan-Cu showed the highest DM availability. Cu chelates supplementation tended to increase gizzard erosion index, and Cu content in the liver was highest in the Met-Cu treatment. Supplementation of Cu chelates tended to decrease total cholesterol level in breast muscle and serum but tended to increase the level of HDL in serum. It was concluded that dietary supplementation of 100 ppm Cu in chelates increased weight gain, feed intake and DM availability. Met-Cu was more effective than Chitosan-Cu or Yeast-Cu in improving productivity of broiler chickens.
Liquid chromatographic behavior of Pd(II), Ni(II) and Co(III) in N-Alkylisonitrosoacetylacetone imine(HIAA-NR) chelates was investigated by reversed phase high perfomance liquid chromatography. The optimum conditions for the separation of IAA-NR-metal chelates were examined respect to the flow rate and mobile phase strength. The metal-N-Alkylisonitrosoacetylacetone imine chelates in solution were successfully separated on Novapak $C_{18}$ column using acetonitrile/water mixture as mobile phase. The elution order of chelates is methyl>ethyl>propyl>butyl as N-alkyl group for ligand is varied. It was found that all IAA-NR-metal chelates were eluted in an acceptable range of capacity factor value($0{\leq}log\;k^{\prime}{\leq}1$). The dependence of log k' on the volume fraction of water in the binary mobile phase was examined. Also, the dependence of k' on the liquid-liquid extraction distribution ratio(Dc) in acetonitrile-water-alkane extraction system was investigated for IAA-NR-metal chelate. Both kinds of dependence are linear, which suggests that the retention of the electroneutral metal chelates on Novapak $C_{18}$ column is largely due to the hydrophobic effect.
An experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of dietary supplementation of copper chelates in the form of methionine, chitosan and yeast on the performance of laying hens. Four hundred ISA Brown layers, 84 wks old, were assigned to 4 treatments: control, 100 ppm Cu in methionine chelate (Met-Cu), 100 ppm Cu as chitosan chelate (Chitosan-Cu) and 100 ppm Cu as yeast chelate (Yeast-Cu). Each treatment had five replicates of 20 hens. Hen-day and hen-housed egg production and egg weight were significantly (p<0.05) increased by Met-Cu supplementation. The increase by Chitosan-Cu and Yeast-Cu supplementation was not significant. Contrast of the control vs. Cu chelates showed egg weight was significantly (p<0.05) increased by Cu chelate supplementation. Soft-shell egg production was significantly (p<0.05) reduced by supplementation of Cu chelates. Met-Cu treatment showed the lowest incidence of soft egg production. Gizzard erosion index was increased by Cu chelate supplementation. Crude fat in liver, total cholesterol in yolk and Cu content in liver and yolk were not significantly influenced by Cu chelate supplementation. It was concluded that dietary supplementation of 100 ppm Cu as Met-Cu significantly increased egg production and egg weight. Cu-Met chelate was also effective in reducing soft-shell egg production but increased gizzard erosion index.

The elution behaviors of Ni(II), Cu(II), Co(II), and Cr(II) in 1-phenyl-3-methyl-4(2-hydroxy-5-X-phenylazo)-5-pyrazolone, [Pm(2-OH)(5-X)PaPz](X=H, $CH_3$, $NO_2$, Cl) chelates have been studied by reversed phase HPLC. Thirteen metal-[Pm(2-OH)(5-X)PaPz] chelates were prepared and characterized by UV, IR, MS, and ICP spectroscopic methods. These metal-2-hydroxyarylazopyrazolone chelates were successfully separated on Novapak-$C_{18}$ column using methanol/water mixtures as a mobile phases. It was found that the chelates were eluted properly in an acceptable range of the capacity factor value($0{\leq}log\;k^{\prime}{\leq}1$). The dependence of the capacity factor(log k') on the volume fraction of water in the binary mobile phase showed a good linearity. Also, there was a good linear dependence of the capacity factor on the liquid-liquid extraction distribution ratio($D_c$) in methanol-water/n-pentadecane extraction system by the batch method. It suggested that the retention of the chelates in the reverse phase liquid chromatographic system be largely due to the solvophobic effect.

Chelating resins containing hydrazide or triethylenetetramine side chain were prepared using a commercial cation exchage resin, Diaion WK 11, and their nitrogen contents were determined by elemental analysis. The synthesized resin, and commercial chelating resins, (Diaion-CR 10 and-CR 20) were treated with various metal chelates of which metal contents were subsequently determined by chelatometry. Sectioned beads of the resin-metal chelates were also observed using electron microprobs X-ray analyzer. To examine the catalytic activity of the resin-metal chelates, they were applied to the oxidation of various hydroxy compounds and l-ascorbic acid, and found to be effective catalysts.
The retention behavior of Cot(II)-dithiocarbamate(DTC) chelates in reversed phase high performance liquid chromatography was investigated. Enthalpy and entropy of chelates transfer from the mobile phase to the stationary phase were calculated from retention data using van't Hoff plots. The dependence of In k' on enthalpy was decreased with increasing organic solvent ratio on the mobile phase. The compensation temperatures(${\beta}$) calculated from the slope of $-{\Delta}H^0$ vs In k' were in the range of 756.3-888.5 K. From these results. it was found that the retention mechanism of DTC chelates was invariant under the various temperatures and was largely affected by the solvophobie effect. Liniear relationship between S index and log k' in emprical retention equation, $log\;k^{\prime}=log\;{k_w}^{\prime}-S_{\varphi}$ showed that S index was influenced mainly by the interaction between DTC chelates and the mobile phase.
Simultaneous separation and analysis of Ni(II), Pd(II), Co(II), Cu(II) and Hg(II) in peperidinedithiocarbamate (PDTC) chelates were investigated by reversed phase liquid chromatography. The optimum conditions for the separation of PDTC metal chelates were examined with respect to the pH, extraction solvent, and mobile phase strength on Novapak $C_{18}$ column using methanol/water mixture as mobile phase. All metal PDTC chelates were eluted in an acceptable range of capacity factor value ($0{\leq}log\;k^{\prime}{\leq}1$). The linear calibration curves were obtained in the concentration range of $0{\sim}1.2{\mu}g/mL$ for five metal ions, and also good precision in the range of 1.96~3.41% RSD was obseved. Under the optimum conditions, trace metat ions in the composite water sample were successfully separated and determined with relative error of ${\pm}2.0%$.

Cotton xanthate, which was obtained by treating cotton with carbon disulfide in alkaline solution, was treated with the solution of polyvalent metal ions to produce cotton xanthate-metal chelates. This chelation reaction was readily and simply achieved, and antimicrobial agents with suitable structures could subsequently be coupled to the chelate with ease at moderate pH values and in aqueous solution. Metal ions used in present work include Cu(II), Zn(II) and Fe(III). Tetracycline, streptomycin, neomycin and pyrithion were used as antimicrobial/antifungal agents. Antibacterial activities were measured employing ditch plate method against G(+) Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococus faecalis, and G(-) Escherichia coli, Enterobacter aerogenes, and the fungus, Aspergillus niger. All the cotton xanthate-metal-antimicrobial agent chelates exhibited activities whereas the cotton xanthate-metal chelates themselves were inactive. Considering the extensive washing procedures and results from control experiments, possibility of the involvement of physical adsorption for the binding of drugs could be excluded.
