Holomorph and phylogeny of Neoerysiphe galeopsidis found on Lamium album subsp. barbatum in Korea

  • Since the first record of an anamorph of Neoerysiphe galeopsidis (syn. Erysiphe galeopsidis) on Lamium album subsp. barbatum in Korea in 1992, no scientific information has been added. Seven additional anamorphic samples (2003-2022) and one teleomorphic collection (November 2022) of N. galeopsidis on L. album subsp. barbatum in Korea enabled us to provide holomorph morphology and phylogeny of this powdery mildew for the first time. The presence of aerial hyphae around the chasmothecia was proposed and documented for the first time.

Erysiphe convolvuli, a Powdery Mildew Occurring on Convolvulus arvensis in Korea

  • Anamorph of a powdery mildew was collected from Convolvulus arvensis (Convolvulaceae) in 2021 in Korea. Based on the morphological examination and molecular phylogenetic analyses of the internal transcribed spacer and large subunit rDNA gene, the powdery mildew was identified as Erysiphe convolvuli. This powdery mildew species is commonly found in Europe and North America, but rarely in East Asia. The holomorph of this powdery mildew was first recorded on Calystegia hederacea in Korea. Conclusively, this is the first report of E. convolvuli on C. arvensis and the second record of this powdery mildew species in Korea.

  • The presence of Pleochaeta shiraiana associated with powdery mildew of Celtis sinensis in Korea is dubious, mainly due to incomplete records of earlier workers. To confirm the occurrence of the powdery mildew and the identity of the causal fungus, morphological characteristics of the anamorph and teleomorph from nine samples deposited in KUS (Herbarium in Korea University) were examined by light microscopy. Identification of the fungus was supported by comparing four ITS sequences from Korean samples with two Japanese data. This is the first confirmed report of the powdery mildew associated with P. shiraiana in Korea.

Outbreak of Powdery Mildew on Zinnia elegans by Golovinomyces cichoracearum in Korea, 2008-2010

  • Podosphaera fusca (syn. Sphaerotheca fusca, S. fuliginea) is a causal agent of powdery mildew infections on Zinnia elegans, and has been documented in Korea since 1967. An outbreak involving about 1,000 plants in October 2008, in Yangpyeong, Korea, was caused by Golovinomyces cichoracearum. Further surveys of zinnia powdery mildew from 2008-2010 confirmed the widespread occurrence of Zinnia-Golovinomyces association in Korea. Chasmothecia of this fungus have not been found on Z. elegans in Korea. Analysis of internal transcribed spacer rDNA from five Korean collections confirmed the powdery mildew as G. cichoracearum. Comparison with the those from GenBank revealed 100% identity with sequences from zinnia powdery mildew, forming a monophyletic clade with 100% bootstrap support, and with those of G. cichoracearum parasitic on the hosts belonging to the tribe Heliantheae of the family Asteraceae.

Erysiphe lonicerigena sp. nov., a Powdery Mildew Species Found on Lonicera harae

  • A powdery mildew (Erysiphaceae) has been continuously collected on the leaves of Lonicera harae in the southern part of the Korean Peninsula, where this shrub is indigenous. Microscopic examination of the asexual morphs revealed that the current collections are differentiated from the all known Erysiphe species on Lonicera spp. by its longer conidiophores and longer conidia. Although the morphology of the chasmothecia is reminiscent of Erysiphe ehrenbergii and E. lonicerae, the specimens on L. harae differ from them in having smaller ascospores. A phylogenetic tree generated from a combined dataset of the internal transcribed spacer region and 28S rDNA gene sequences demonstrates that sequences obtained from three powdery mildew collections on L. harae clustered together as an independent species clade with high bootstrap values distant from other Erysiphe species on Lonicera, representing a species of its own. Based on morphological differences and molecular-phylogenetic results, the powdery mildew on L. harae is proposed as a new species, Erysiphe lonicerigena, and the holomorph of the fungus is described and illustrated in this study.

Occurence of Powdery Mildew Caused by Podosphaera xanthii on Vigna nakashimae in Korea (Podosphaera xanthii에 의한 좀돌팥 흰가루병 발생)

  • In October 2022, common Asian cowpea (Vigna nakashimae) powdery mildew disease was investigated at Yesan-gun, Chungcheongnam-do, Korea (36°40'12.7"N,126°51'36.4"E). The disease mainly occurred on the front of the leaves, and weak powdery mildew disease occurred on the back side of leaf. The chasmothecia was identified on the back side of the leaf. Analysis of the internal transcribed spacer rDNA sequence and 28S large subunit sequence, along with the morphological characteristics of the anamorph and teleomorph of the causal fungus identified as Podosphaera xanthii. This is the first time in Korea to report common Asian cowpea (Vigna nakashimae) powdery mildew disease caused by Podospaera xanthii.

Occurrence of Powdery Mildew Caused by Erysiphe abeliicola on Glossy Abelia in Korea (Erysiphe abeliicola에 의한 꽃댕강나무 흰가루병 발생)

  • In November 2009, a powdery mildew on glossy abelia (Abelia ${\times}$ grandiflora) was found in Seogwipo, Jeju Island, Korea. Further survey in the southern part of Korea, e.g., Jeju, Busan, and Tongyeong confirmed occurrence of the disease. White colonies were present on leaves, young stems, and flowers, detracting from their beauty in landscape plantings. Severely infected lesions were discolored to red-purplish. Based on the morphological characteristics and analysis of rDNA, the fungus associated with the symptoms was identified as Erysiphe abeliicola U. Braun & S. Takam. This work provides the morphological feature of its anamorph for the first time, which is characterized by having multi-lobed hyphal appressoria and short foot-cells of conidiophores. Morphological characteristics of mature chasmothecia were consistent with the previous Japanese record of this species. The sequence of internal transcribed spacer region of ribosomal DNA obtained from a Korean sample showed that this species places in the section Microsphaera of the genus Erysiphe in phylogenetic position, corresponding with the classical taxonomy. This is the first report of E. abeliicola and its host plant in Korea. The host plant A. ${\times}$ grandiflora is newly listed in the host range of E. abeliicola.
