The purpose of the study is to evaluate fracture toughness on the Laser and the electron beam welded joints of high tensile steels (HT500, HT550, HT650) by using 3-point bend CTOD and Charpy impact test. WM (weld metal) CTOD tests have been carried out using two kinds of CTOD specimen, the Laser beam welding (108mm length, and 24mm width, and 12mm thickness) and the electron beam welding (l71mm length, and 38mm width, and 19mm thickness). WM Charpy impact specimen is a standard V-notch type, and the temperature of the experiment is changed from -45 to 20 degree of centigrade. FE-analysis is also performed in order to investigate the effect of stress-strain fields on fracture characteristics. Results of the standard V-notch Charpy test are influenced by strength mis-match effect and the absorbed energy vE depends on crack path, and The transition temperature of Laser beam welded joints is more higher than that of electron beam welded joints. Results of the 3-point bend test give low critical CTOD and the crack path is in the weld metal of al specimens. These results indicate fracture toughness characteristics of the welded joints and transition temperature of HT500 are similar both a Laser beam welded joint and an electron beam welded joint. But the fracture toughness and the transition temperature of the electron beam welded joints of HT550 and HT650 are higher than those o the Laser beam welded joints.
Butt-joints of A6061-T6 and AZ31 plates were successfully manufactured by using a friction stir welding method. Off-set free joints and off-set joints were fabricated to investigate the effect of the tool plunge position on the mechanical properties of the joints. Hardness test, tensile test and charpy impact test was performed to evaluate the mechanical properties of the joints. Off-set condition resulted in increase of mechanical properties of the joints. The variation of the hardness distribution in the SZ was also stabilized in the off-set condition. Tensile strength of the off-set joint was about 85% against to that of the AZ31 base metal. Impact absorption energy by Charpy-Impact-Test of the off-set joint also increased by almost 2 times against to that of the AZ31 base metal.

Cast austenitic stainless steel have been widely used for primary coolant piping in light water reactors. This material is subject to thermal embrittlement at reactor operating temperature. CF-8M and CF-8A cast austenitic stainless steel is used for several components, such as primary coolant piping, elbow, pump casing, and valve bodies in light water reactors. Thermal embrittlement results in spinodal decomposition of delta-ferrite leading to decreased fracture toughness. In this study, the specimens were prepared using an accelerated aging method. The measurement of ferrite content, Charpy impact test and J-R test were performed to verify the predicting equation for aged material properties. In case of above 25% ferrite content, predicted result of J-R curve might be non-conservative.

The fracture toughness of 2.25Cr-1Mo cast steel (SA217-WC9) samples which were taken from the check valves of feed water piping of Korean Standard Nuclear Power Plant(KSNPP) was measured by Master Curve method. The measured $T_0$ reference temperature of SA217-WC9 steel was $-30^{\circ}C$. The obtained $T_0$ was compared to the derived value from Charpy impact test data following to SINTEP procedure. The heat-to-heat variation in fracture toughness of SA217-WC9 steel was observed. It was found that the low toughness of a heat of SA217-WC9 steel was attributed to the coarse MnS inclusion originated by high sulfur content as the results of microanalyses.
HAZ(Heat Affected Zone of weldm ents) properties were investigated for a high nitrogen austenitic stainless steel with a chemical composition of Fe-0.02C-0.15Si-6.00Mn-10.0Ni-23.0Cr-2.00Mo-0.48N-0.14V. Thermal cycle of HAZ was simulated by the thermal cycle simulator (Gleeble 1500). The heat treatment was applied to the Charpy test size sample without notch under various peak temperatures and/or the holding times condition. V-notch Charpy test was performed at the temperature range of 273~77 K. Metallographic examination also was carried out by using optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. The simulated specimens revealed a slight embrittlement compared with the base materials. The impact toughness of the specimens deteriorated with the decreasing test temperature. The results from Charpy V-notch test, however, showed that significant degradation of absorbed energy caused by brittle fracture was not observed for the specimen tested in the test temperature range.
In this study, six kinds of low-carbon steel specimens with different ferrite-pearlite microstructures were fabricated by varying the Nb content and the transformation temperature. The microstructural factors of ferrite grain size, pearlite fraction, interlamellar spacing, and cementite thickness were quantitatively measured based on optical and scanning electron micrographs; then, Charpy impact tests were conducted in order to investigate the correlation of the microstructural factors with the impact toughness and the ductile-brittle transition temperature (DBTT). The microstructural analysis results showed that the Nb4 specimens had ferrite grain size smaller than that of the Nb0 specimens due to the pinning effect resulting from the formation of carbonitrides. The pearlite interlamellar spacing and the cementite thickness also decreased as the transformation temperature decreased. The Charpy impact test results indicated that the impact-absorbed energy increased and the ductile-brittle transition temperature decreased with addition of Nb content and decreasing transformation temperature, although all specimens showed ductile-brittle transition behaviour.

It is important to ensure the reliability of the first localized reactor vessel steel. To satisfy with this purpose, a study on the impact/hardness, low cycle fatigue(LCF), crack growth rate(da/dN) and fracture toughness( ) of base material(BM) and weld metal(WM) were performed under room temperature air and corrosion conditions. A summary of the results is as folows : (1) Charpy impact absorbed energy of BM was the highest value, heat affected zoon(HAZ) and the lowest, WM. The hardness of BM was similar to HAZ. (2) Coefficients of Manson equation using the monotonic tensile test data were obtained for the present material. (3) The effects of stress ratio and ambient (120.deg. C and NaCl) condition on da/dN were investigated, da/dN with NaCl condition expressed the highest value. (4) The results of Charpy V-notch impact test had good correlation with $K_{IC}$ characteristics and the lowest curve of $K_{IC}$ for BM was derived, more researches about WM and HAZ are required hereafter.
Fracture energy values KV have been measured on cast steel, used in the container manufacture, by instrumented Charpy impact testing. This material has a large ductility on the upper transition region at $+20^{\circ}C$ and a ductile tearing with an expended plasticity before a brittle fracture on the lower transition region at $-20^{\circ}C$. To assess the fracture toughness of this material we use, the $K_{IC}$-KV correlations to measure the critical stress intensity factor $K_{IC}$ on the lower transition region and the dynamic force - displacement curves to measure the critical fracture toughness $J{\rho}_C$, the essential work of fracture ${\Gamma}_e$ on the upper transition region. It is found, using the $K_{IC}$-KV correlations, that the critical stress intensity factor $K_{IC}$ remains significant, on the lower transition region, which indicating that our testing material preserves his ductility at low temperature and it is apt to be used as a container's material. It is, also, found that the $J_{\rho}-{\rho}$ energetic criterion, used on the upper transition region, gives a good evaluation of the fracture toughness closest to those found in the literature. Finally, we show, by using the ${\Gamma}_e-K_{IC}$ relation, on the lower transition region, that the essential work of fracture is not suitable for the toughness measurement because the strong scatter of the experimental data. To complete this study by a numerical approach we used the ANSYS code to determine the critical fracture toughness $J_{ANSYS}$ on the upper transition region.
Materials used for a reactor pressure vessel(RPV) are required high strength and toughness, which determine the safety margin and life of a reactor. Ni-Mo-Cr low alloy steel shows better mechanical properties than existing RPV steels due to higher Ni and Cr contents compared to the existing RPV steels. The present study focuses on effects of Ni, Cr contents on the cleavage fracture toughness of Ni-Mo-Cr low alloy steels in the transition temperature region. The fracture toughness was characterized by a 3-point bend test of precracked Charpy V-notch(PCVN) specimens based on ASTM E1921-08. The test results indicated that the fracture toughness was considerably improved with an increase of Ni and Cr contents. Especially, control of Cr content was more effective in improving fracture toughness than manipulating Ni content, though Charpy impact toughness was changed more extensively by adjusting Ni content. These differences between changes in the fracture toughness and that in the impact toughness were derived from microstructural features, such as martensite lath size and carbide precipitation behavior.
A copper-tungsten sintered alloy(Cu-W) has been friction welded to a tough pitch copper in order to investigate the effect of upset pressure on friction weldability. Under the condition of friction time 0.8sec, upset pressure 150MPa, the tensile strength and Charpy impact value of the friction welded joint were 336MPa, $400KJ/m^2$ respectively. And highest temperature of the weld measured was below $800^{circ}K$ which is very lower than melting point of Cu($1356^{circ}K$). Under the same conditions, W grains picked up in Cu matrix from Cu-W profitably affected on these mechanical fracture, and were dispersed in Cu by plastic flow during brake time.
