Impact behavior of large SF590A (Fe-0.65C-1.5Mn-0.035P-0.035S-0.3Cr-0.15Mo-0.4Ni-0.3Cu) forged propeller shaft was studied in this study. Charpy impact specimens were prepared from the forged product with different heat number. The impact value of each specimen with different heat number tends to vary greatly depending on the prior austenite grain size and, less significantly, on the amount of sulfur. The dominant metallurgical factors affecting impact behavior of SF590A forged product are discussed based on fractographic and metallographic observations.
This study aims to investigate the suitability of requirement for post-weld heat treatment(PWHT) temperature when different P-No. materials are welded, which is defined by ASME Sec. III Code. For SA-516 Gr. 60 and SA-106 Gr. B carbon steels that are typical P-No. 1 material, simulated heat treatment were conducted for 8 h at $610^{\circ}C$, $650^{\circ}C$, $690^{\circ}C$, and $730^{\circ}C$, last two temperature falls in the temperature of PWHT for P-No. 5A low-alloy steels. Tensile and Charpy impact tests were performed for the heat-treated specimens, and then microstructure was analyzed by optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive spectrometry. The Charpy impact properties deteriorated significantly mainly due to a large amount of cementite precipitation when the temperature of simulated heat treatment was $730^{\circ}C$. Therefore, when dissimilar metal welding is carried out for P-No. 1 carbon steel and different P-No. low alloy steel, the PWHT temperature should be carefully selected to avoid significant deterioration of impact properties for P-No. 1 carbon steel.
Basalt and poly-ester fibers along with epoxy resin were used to produce inter-ply, intra-ply and functionally gradient hybrid composites. In all of the composites, the relative content of basalt fiber to poly-ester fiber was equal to 50 percent. The flexural and charpy impact properties of the hybrid composites are presented with particular regard to the effects of the hybrid types, stacking sequence of the plies, loading direction and loading speed. The results show that with properly choosing the composition and the stacking sequence of the plies; the inter-ply hybrid composites can achieve better flexural strength and impact absorption energy compared to the intra-ply and functionally gradient composites. The flexural strength and impact absorption energy of the functionally gradient hybrid composites is comparable to, or higher than the intra-ply sample. Also, by increasing the loading speed, the flexural strength increases while the flexural modulus does not have any special trend.
This paper describes the failure mechanism and Charpy impact test of Fiber glass Reinforced Plastic composites which it was actually used for side plate of vessel. There are two examinations. The examination I, the specimens which it given temperature range $-25^{\circ}C$-$50^{\circ}C$ and with different initial notch length did impact test and then it compared impact energy(Uc) and impact fracture toughness(GIC). The examination II, the specimens which it putted into fresh water and sea water for scheduled hours did impact test and it compared impact energy(Uc) and impact fracture toughness(GIC). From examination I, it showed that impact energy(Uc) and impact fracture toughness(GIC) were peak at ambient temperature and decrease as temperature reduced. Fracture toughness(GIC) showed increase as initial notch length reduced. From examination II, impact energy(Uc) and impact fracture toughness(GIC) tended to increase which specimens putted in fresh water compared with sea water and maximum tolerance rate tend to decrease as permeation hours will be long.
The main goal of this work is to study the effects of temperature and volume fraction of fiber on the Charpy impact test with GF/PP composites. The critical fracture energy and failure mechanisms of GF/PP composites are investigated in the temperature range of 60^{\circ}C$ to -50^{\circ}C$ by impact test. The critical fracture energy increased as the fiber volume fraction ratio increased. The critical fracture energy shows a maximum at ambient temperature and it tends to decreases as temperature goes up or goes down. Major failure mechanisms can be classified such as fiber matrix debonding, fiber pull-out and/or delamination and matrix deformation.
In this study, investigations were conducted in calculating parameters of elastic-plastic fracture mechanics using single specimen. The validity of these testing methods was judged by the confirmation of multiple specimen method of stop block test. The results were as follows: In order to measure a fracture toughness using the instrumented impact test, two general requirement must be considered; One, setting up proper impact velocity considered the effect of loading and the other, the necessity of low blow test for obtaining true energy by the compliance correction. It was possible to detect a crack initiation point by calculating the compliance changing rate from a load-defection curve. Criterion of a stable crack growth, $T_{mat}$ could be estimated by using key-curve method for a base metal. and combining Kaiser's rebound compliance with Paris-Hutchison's $T_{appl}$ equation for the brittled zone of welding heat affected.at affected.d.
The effects of ageing treatment on the mechanical properties of two Cu-bearing HSLA(High Strength Low Alloy) steels, HSLA-A and HSLA-B ,were studied by means of SEM, TEM, tensile, charpy impact and hardness tests. These steels showed excellent combination in strength and toughness at an ageing of $650^{\circ}C$ by the precipitation of $\varepsilon$-Cu and low carbon alloying. The peak strength was achieved at an ageing of 50$0^{\circ}C$ in both steels, while the impact energy was very low in this peak strength. With ageing temperature above this temperature, strength was decreased whereas impact energy increased. A marked increase in hardness above 675$^{\circ}C$ was associated with the formation of “M-A constituents” which forms during cooling from austenite-ferrite two phase region. The impact transition temperature of HSLA-A and HSLA-B steels were -l$25^{\circ}C$ and -145$^{\circ}C$, respectively.
The dynamic fracture toughness, $K_{Id}$,is measured in the heat-treated and ion-nitrided Cr-Mo, Ni-Cr-Mo steel using standard and Precracked Charpy specimens an imstrumented impact machine. The value of $K_{Id}$and both the energy of initiate fracture, and the total energy of fracture. Since the $K_{Id}$values of the precraked impact specimens are in accord with their theoretical ones, this testing method is sufficently practical. The effect of ion-nitriding are found to be larger than the heat-treaded specimen.

In this study mechanical strength of A53B carbon steel was analyzed using several types of test specimens directly machined from oil recycling pipe experienced a failure due to hydrogen attack in chemical plants. High temperature hydrogen attack (HTHA) is the damage process of grain boundary facets due to a chemical reaction of carbides with hydrogen, thus forming cavities with high pressure methane gas. Driven by the methane gas pressure, the cavities grow on grain boundaries forming intergranular micro cracks. Microscopic optical examination, tensile test, Charpy impact test, hardness measurement, and small punch (SP) test were performed. Carbon content of the hydrogen attacked specimens was dramatically reduced compared with that of standard specification of A53B. Traces of decarburization and micro-cracks were observed by optical and scanning electron microscopy. Charpy impact energy in hydrogen attacked part of the pipe exhibited very low values due to the decarburization and micro fissure formation by HTHA, on the other hand, data tested from the sound part of the pipe showed high and scattered impact energy. Maximum reaction forces and ductility in SP test were decreased at hydrogen attacked part of the pipe compared with sound part of the pipe. Finite element analyses for SP test were performed to estimate tensile properties for untested part of the pipe in tensile test. And fracture toughness was calculated using an equivalent strain concept with SP test and finite element analysis results.
