We investigated the photoluminescence (PL) characteristics of a highly soluble, fullerene-containing copolymer in both solution and film states. In solution state, the copolymer showed different PL characteristics depending on the aromaticity of the solvent. The PL from polystyrene segments of the copolymer was strongly quenched in an aromatic solvent, while the PL from fullerene remained unchanged. However, the films cast from an aromatic and a nonaromatic solvent demonstrated very similar PL characteristics, implying that the chain alignment or orientation and packing in the films occur in a similar way irrespective of the solvent.
To evaluate the pharmaceutical aspects of solvent deposition method where drug is solvent deposited on the surface of excipients, a study has been made on dissolution characteristics of indomethacin solvent deposited on lactose and potato starch. In a solvent deposition system, the drug-to-excipient ratio and kind of excipient effect much on dissolution rates of indomethacin. The experimental results are as follows: 1) Lactose was shown to be superior to potato starch as excipients in indomethacin solvent deposited. 2) Total amount of indomethacin dissolved from solvent deposition systems at 30 minutes were enhanced about 5 to 23 times compared with that of pure indomethacin. 3) Increased dissotion amount of indomethacin from the solvent deposition systems were observed to be alike in the systems where the drug-to-excipient weight ratios were 1 : 5, 1 : 7 and 1 : 10.
Preparation and characteristics of a matrix retaining electrolyte using SiC whisker, PES binder, and NMP(n-methyl-2-pyrrolidone) as a non-volatile solvent for a phosphoric acid fuel cell were investigated. The conditions of binder and plasticizer, and the effects of substituting a volatile solvent by a non-volatile solvent were also studied. The minimum amount of the binder was about 17 wt% for the proper bubble pressure and surrounding SiC whiskers. And the maximum amount of the plasticizer was about 10wt% to be fitted into the polymer chain of the binder. The matrix prepared by using a non-volatile solvent needed longer time to dry, and its pore size was smaller compared with that of the matrix prepared by using volatile solvent. The small pore size resulted in decrease of the overall pore volume. The ionic conductivity in the condition of the same thickness was decreased due to decrease of phosphoric acid absorbancy. As the internal resistance of the electrolyte increased, the fuel cell performance slightly decreased.
Purpose: The objective of the present study was to evaluate the effects of occupational exposure to low dose organic solvents on the prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors. Methods: Study design was retrospective cohort study subjected on 191 exposures and 118 controls working in a petrochemical manufacture company. The eight indicators related to CVD risk were followed up for five years from 2008 to 2012. The risk level was compared during the follow up years and subject's characteristics, and the change of risk level were analyzed with repeated measures ANOVA and multiple logistic regression analysis. Results: At the start year 2008, the rate over cutoff value (ROCV) of BS (p<.001) and mean systolic BP (p=.017) were higher in organic solvent exposure group and the others showed no difference. And by the subject's characteristics, odds ratio of the ROCV of BS were higher in organic solvent exposure group and work shift group as 2.51 and 3.07. Comparing the results in 2012 to those of 2008, cardiovascular disease risk in organic solvent exposure group was about 1.5 times higher than that of in the control group. Conclusion: Gradual increase in the CVD risk was identified in organic solvent exposure group. However, the risk might be influenced by shift work and bad behaviors rather than organic solvent exposure.
Photothermal properties depend on the characteristics of energy transfer processes in solution. In this study, a time-resolved single beam thermal lens experiment in various solvents is employed to investigate the energy coupling effects which govern the energy transfer processes. Interestingly, it is observed that the behaviour of the photothermal propagation in solution depends on the property of solution and the concentration of solute in a single beam thermal lens configuration. These characteristics lead us to consider the solute-solvent coupling effects as well as the solvent-solvent interactions.
Dissolution characteristics of flurbiprofen solvent deposited on ${\alpha}-cyclodextrin$, ${\beta}-cyclodextrin$, lactose and corn starch were studied to evaluate the pharmaceutical aspects of solvent deposition method where drug was solvent deposited on the surface of excipients. In a solvent deposition system, the drug to excipient ratio and kind of excipient affect much on dissolution rates of flurbiprofen. The solvent deposition system formation was confirmed by scanning electron microscope. By increasing the amounts of matrix, it was possible to enhance the dissolution rate of flurbiprofen solvent deposition system. The amount of flurbiprofen dissolved from ${\beta}-cyclodextrin$ deposition system (1:10) at 60 minutes was enhanced 6.5 times in water and 28 times in simulated gastric juice compared with flurbiprofen alone. Flurbiprofen solvent deposited system (1:10) enhanced dissolution rate greater than inclusion complex and dispersion system.
Electrochemical charateristics of activated carbon fiber cloth(ACFC) electrode were studied with propylene carbonate(PC), ${\gamma}$-butyrolactone(GBL) and N,N-dimethyl-formamide(DMF) as a solvent and tetraethylammoniumtetrafluoroborate(TEABF$_4$), tetraethylammoniumhexafluorophosphate(TEABF$_{6}$), tetrabutylammoniumtetrafluoroborate(TBABF$_4$) and tetrabutylammonium hexafluorophosphate(TBAPF$_6$) as an electrolytes(active material). The concentrations of electrolytes were in the range of 0.2~1.2 N, the volume ratios of PC and DMF as a mixed solvent system, were 90:10, 80:20, 70:30, 60:40, 50:50, and 40:60 vol%. Electrochemical characteristics such as electric conductivity, internal resistance, and electric capacitance of fabricated unit cells were measured after the moisture of activated material was removed with molecular sieve. Electrochemical characteristics were better in mixed solvents system than in mono solvent system. The mono solvent system of 1.0 N electrolyte of GBL/TEABF$_4$ with activated carbon cloth electrodes showed better result but the mixed solvent system with PC and DMF/TEABF$_4$(50:50 vol%) and the concentration of 1.0 N electrolyte showed the best characteristics. Internal resistance was 3.47 $\Omega$ and specific capacitance was 19.1 F/g respectively.y.
The solvent flushing apparatus for soil remediation was manufactured. After the soil around nuclear facilities was sampled and was compulsorily contaminated by Co, the remediation characteristics by solvent flushing were analyzed. Meanwhile, one-dimensional solute transport within nonequilibrium sorption code was developed for modelling of the soil remediation, input parameters for modelling were measured by laboratory experiment. Experimental results are as follows : When water was used as a solvent, the higher was the hydraulic conductivity, the higher the efficiency of soil remediation was. When EDTA solution was used as a solvent, the soil remediation efficiency of EDTA solution showed higher than that of water.
Thin films spin-coated from solvent solutions are characterized by solution parameters and spin-coating process. In this study, performance characteristics of polymer solar cells were investigated with changing solution parameters such as solvent and additives. The phase-separation between polymer and fullerene is needed to make the percolation pathway for better transportation of hole and electron in polymer solar cells. For this reason, cooperative effects of solvent mixtures adding additives with distinct solubility have been studied recently. In this study, chlorobezene, 1, 2-dichlorbenzene, and chloroform were used as solvent. 1, 8-diiodoctaned and 1, 8-octanedithiol were used as additives and were added into poly(3-hexylthiophene-2, 5-diyl)/[6, 6]-phenyl C61 butyric acid methyl ester (P3HT/PCBM) blends. Pre-patterned ITO glass was cleaned using ultrasonication in mixed solvent with ethyl alcohol, isopropyl alcohol and acetone. PEDOT:PSS was spin-coated on to the ITO substrate at 3000rpm and was baked at $120^{\circ}C$ for 10min on the hotplate. The prepared solution was spin-coated at 1000rpm and the spin-coated thin film was dried in the Petri dishes. Al electrode was deposited on the thin film by thermal evaporation. The devices were annealed at $120^{\circ}C$ for 30min. By adding 2.5 volume percent of additives into the chlorobenzene from that bulk heterojunction films consisting of P3HT/PCBM, the power efficiency (AM 1.5G conditions) was increased from 2.16% to 2.69% and 3.12% respectively. We have investigated the effect of additives in P3HT/PCBM blends and the film characteristics and the film characteristics including J-V characteristics, absorption, photoluminescence, X-ray diffraction, and atomic force microscopy to mainly depict the morphology control by doping additives.
