  • In this study, spatial characteristics of rainfall in Imha basin were investigated by cross-correlation analysis among rainfall gaging stations and rainfall-runoff analysis used in HEC-HMS model for analysis of influence on observed rainfall. The Kriging technique was applied to rain(all analysis in Imha basin to reflect spatial characteristics of regional rainfall. Their results are compared to rainfall-runoff data with spatially distributed rainfall data as well as the classical thiessen method. The results by kriging technique approached by geostatistical method could reflect spatial characteristics of regional rainfall properly in Imha basin.

  • In this study, the runoff characteristics of the non-rainfall period were examined using daily rainfall data from 1977 to 2017 and the data of runoff into the dam. Results showed that, the mean runoff decreases with longer non-rainfall periods in the Andong dam basin. The correlation coefficient between non-rainfall days and average runoff reaches 0.85. The results of the analysis of the runoff characteristics during the non-rainfall period, based on the preceding rainfall of Andong dam are as follows. The runoff characteristics of the entire non-rainfall period, shows that, for a rainfall of 1.0 mm or less, the runoff height was larger than the rainfall size and the base runoff larger. The correlation between the antecedent rainfall and runoff height was reached as high as 0.9864 in the 30 ~ 50 mm interval of the antecedent rainfall period, and this is the interval where the linearity of rainfall and runoff was at its maximum in the Andong dam basin. The correlation between the antecedent rainfall and the runoff height reached 0.92 for rainfalls of 100.0 mm. However, for rainfalls of 100.0 mm greater, the correlation between the antecedent rainfall and runoff height during the rainfall period was 0.64, which is relatively small. In this study, we investigated the runoff characteristics of the rainfall period in the Andong dam watershed. As a result, it was confirmed that the mean runoff decreased with rainfall duration. The linearity was found to be weak for rainfall events greater than 100.0 mm. The results of this study can be used as data for water balance analysis and for formulating a water supply plan to establish water resource management of Andong dam.

  • In order to establish the risk criteria of inundation due to typhoons or heavy rainfall, research is underway to predict the limit rainfall using basin characteristics, limit rainfall and artificial intelligence algorithms. In order to improve the model performance in estimating the limit rainfall, the learning data are used after the pre-processing. When 50.0% of the entire data was removed as an outlier in the pre-processing process, it was confirmed that the accuracy is over 90%. However, the use rate of learning data is very low, so there is a limitation that various characteristics cannot be considered. Accordingly, in order to predict the limit rainfall reflecting various watershed characteristics by increasing the use rate of learning data, the watersheds with similar characteristics were clustered. The algorithms used for clustering are K-Means, Agglomerative, DBSCAN and Spectral Clustering. The k-Means, DBSCAN and Agglomerative clustering algorithms are clustered at the impervious area ratio, and the Spectral clustering algorithm is clustered in various forms depending on the parameters. If the results of the clustering algorithm are applied to the limit rainfall prediction algorithm, various watershed characteristics will be considered, and at the same time, the performance of predicting the limit rainfall will be improved.

  • Climate change has significantly affected the rainfall characteristics which can influence the pollutant build-up and wash-off patterns from the catchment. Therefore, this study explored the influence of varying rainfall characteristics on urban and agricultural runoff pollutant export using statistical approaches. For this purpose, Mann-Kendall and Pettitt's test were applied to detect the trend and breakpoint in rainfall characteristics time series. In addition, double mass curve and correlation analysis were used to drive the relationship between rainfall-runoff and pollutant exports from both catchments. The results indicate a significant decreased in total rainfall and average rainfall intensity, while a significant increased trend for antecedents dry days and total storm duration over the study periods. The breakpoint was determined to be 2013 which shows remarkable trend shifts for total rainfall, average rainfall intensity and antecedents dry days except total duration. Double mass curve exhibited a straight line with significant rainfall-runoff relationship indicates a climate change effect on both sites. Overall, higher pollutant exports were observed at both sites during the baseline period as compared to change periods. In agricultural site, most of the pollutants exhibited significant (p< 0.05) association with total rainfall, average rainfall intensity and total storm duration. In contrast, pollutants from urban site significantly correlated with antecedent dry days and average rainfall intensity. Thus, total rainfall, average rainfall intensity and total duration were the significant factors for the agricultural catchment while, antecedents dry days and average rainfall intensity were key factors in build-up and wash-off from the urban catchment.

  • Various analyses were made to investigate the stochastic structure of the daily rainfall in Korea. Records of daily rainfall amounts from 1951 to 1984 at Chinju Metesrological Station were used for this study. Obtained results are as follows : 1. Time series of the daily rainfall at Chinju were positively, serially correlated for the lag as large as one day. 2. Rainfall events, defined as a sequence of consecutive wet days separated by one or more dry days, showed a seasonal variation in the occurrence frequency. 3. The marginal distribution of event characteristics of each month showed significant dif- ferences each other. Events occurred in summer had longer duration and higher magnitude with higher intensity than those of events occurred in winter. 4. There were significant positive correlations among four event characteristics ; dura- tion, magnitude, average intensity, and maximum intensity. 5. Correlations among the daily rainfall amounts within an event were not significant in general. 6. There were no consistant significancy in identity or difference between the distribu- tions of daily rainfall amounts for different days within events. 7. Above mentioned characteristics of daily rainfall time series must be considered in building a stochastic model of daily rainfall.

  • Most of the natural calamities occurred in South Korea are due to rainfall, which are occurred during rainy season, June to September. The life-calamity reported in those seasons were over 75%, and the dead rate by the rainfall was about 98%. Especially, the disasters occurred in Pusan and Kyongsang-Namdo were highest of the whole country. The capability of landslide in this area was very high, which is included to Class 3 or Class 4 of disastrous risk grade suggested by the GIS system(Lee Su-Gon,1999). Those are based on the characteristics of topographical and meteorological data. In this study, the rainfall characteristics in Pusan were analyzed through the relationship between the cumulative rainfall and the maximum hourly rainfall. The landslide in this area depends on the elapsed time after maximum hourly rainfall intensity, and the most of landslide in Pusan recorded during within 3 hours after pick-time of rainfall intensity.

  • This paper is results of analyzing the characteristics of rainfall triggering landslides and geometry of slopes, caused by the heavy rainfall and antecedent precipitation by Typhoons Ewiniar and Bilis at Chuncheon area in Gangwondo around July in 2006. As results of analyzing the characteristics of rainfall, landslides in 131 sites were found to happen due to the heavy rainfall having the maximum intensity of rainfall in an hour during July 15 and antecedent precipitation during July 12 to 14 causing the ground to be weak by increasing the degree of saturation previously. From results of analyzing the geometrical characteristics of 131 slopes where landslides occurred, the slope width were in the range of 6~10m. The average slope length and angle were 46m and $51.8^{\circ}$, which was relatively steep slope, respectively. Landlises occurred in the elevation of 400 - 500 m with the most probable frequency.

  • Recently, the incidence of heavy rainfall is increasing. Therefore, a rainfall analysis should be performed considering increasing frequency. The current rainfall analysis for hydrologic design use the hourly rainfall data of ASOS with a density of 36 km on the Korean Peninsula. Therefore, medium and small scale watershed included Thiessen network at the same rainfall point are analyzed with the same design rainfall and time distribution. This causes problem that the watershed characteristics can not be considered. In addition, there is a problem that the temporal-spatial change of the heavy rainfall occurring in the range of 10~20 km can not be considered. In this study, Author estimated design rainfall considering heavy rainfall using minutely rainfall data of AWS, which are relatively dense than ASOS. Also, author analyzed the time distribution and runoff of each case to estimate the huff's method suitable for the watershed. The research result will contribute to the estimation of the design hydrologic data considering the heavy rainfall and watershed characteristics.

  • Every year, particularly during the monsoon rainy season, landslides at the Chuncheon province of South Korea cause tremendous damage to lives, properties, and infrastructures. More so, the high rainfall intensity and long rainfall days that occurred in 2020 have increased the water content in the soil, thereby increasing the chances of landslide occurrences. Besides this, the rainfall thresholds and characteristics responsible for the initiation of landslides in this region have not been properly identified. Therefore, this paper addresses the rainfall thresholds responsible for the initiation of landslides at Chuncheon from a regional perspective. Using data obtained from rainfall measurements taken from 2002 to 2011, we identify a threshold relationship between rainfall intensity and rainfall duration for the initiation of landslides. In addition, we identify the relationship between the rainfall intensity using a 3-day, 7-day, and 10-day antecedent rainfall observation. Specifically, we estimate the rainfall data at 8 sites where debris flow occurred in 2011 by kriging. Following this, the estimated data are used to construct the relationship between the intensity (I), duration (D), and frequency (F) of rainfall. The results of the intensity-duration-frequency (IDF) analysis show that landslides will occur under a rainfall frequency below a 2-year return period at two areas in Chuncheon. These results will be effectively used to design structures that can prevent the occurrence of landslides in the future.
