  • While sludge settles down in a batch column, sludge concentration becomes high. Sludge concentration change is one of the most critical causes of the sludge settling velocity variation. Therefore, sludge concentration change causes sludge index to change. SVI is more sensitive than other sludge indexes to the change of sludge concentration. And if sludge-water interface has reached final height within 30minutes, SVI is not suitable for prediction of sludge settling characteristic, Therefore, SVIs of each sludge are, in some cases, different although each sludge has the same settling velocity. But SVI has been widely used to interpret sludge settling characteristic by a simple testing method. This work has two purposes. The first purpose is to predict sludge settling velocity by using sludge-water interface settling velocity. And the second purpose is to develop new sludge settling characteristic index to exactly interpret sludge settling characteristic by overcoming the limit of SVI.

  • We got the growth distance curve by spline smoothing method with observed marketing data and the growth velocity curve by the derivation of the growth distance curve. Using this growth velocity curve, we defined the several characteristic points which describe the variation of marketing data. In this paper, to specify several patterns of marketing data, we suggested characteristic function by using these characteristic points. In addition, we applied characteristic function to the seventeen brands of electric home products data.

  • While sludge is settling in batch column, sludge concentration becomes high. Because the characteristic of sludge settling changes in function of time due to the sludge concentration change, the sludge settling velocity changes too. Also, because the sludge settling characteristic is influenced by a physical characteristic of sludge and a column height etc, it is difficult to exactly measure the sludge settling characteristic. Although the sludge volume indexes, SVI, SSVI and $SSVI_{3.5}$, are used to predict sludge settling characteristic, these indexes are not reliable values. Because the previously established models for sludge settling velocity predict the sludge settling velocity only, it is difficult to predict sluge-water interface height by using those models. The purpose of this experiment is to establish the empirical model which predicts the sludge interface height change with respect to the sludge physical characteristic and the settling condition.

  • In this investigation work, liquid-liquid extraction (L.L.E) through three distinctive frameworks have been examined for assurance of slip velocity (S.V), and characteristic velocity (C.V) in a non-center rotating column (N.C.R.C) with a wide extend of factors. Three double frameworks with distinctive interfacial tension comprising of toluene-water (high interfacial tension), n-butyl acetate-water (medium interfacial tension), and n-butanol-water (low interfacial tension) were investigated for tests. Two common relationships for the expectation of S.V and C.V, including phase stream rates, rotor speed, column geometry additionally physical properties, are displayed. The recommended relationships were compared with test information gotten from the writing and the display examination. Findings of this study, the present proposed correlations are more accurate than those previously reported.

  • When low sliding velocities in the boundary lubrication range are operating, irregular movements frequently occur which are a result of the stick-slip phenomenon. Such slide motions are undesirable in precision machine tools, particularly with feed back systems used in numerical and adaptive control machine tools. Accordingly, this paper reports analytical and experimental studies in the stick-slip characteristic of machine tool feeding system. The main conclusions of this study are as follows; The tendency towards stick-slip effects may be reduced by; 1). Reducing the drop in friction coefficient in the Stribeck curve(on the rising part of the friction characteristic at higher sliding speeds, the system is stable all the time) 2). Reducing the transition velocity by the use of a higher viscosity lubricating oil. 3). Increasing the stiffness(Damping)and reducing normal load(Sliding mass) Therefore, the Critical velocity is decided from the above conclusions and in designing of machine tool, feed rates(sliding velocity)must be design the more than critical velocity.

  • The power output of the stirling engine is influenced by the regenerator effectiveness. The regenerator effectiveness is influenced by heat transfer and flow friction loss of the regenerator matrix. In this paper, in order to provide basic data for the design of the regenerator matrix, characteristics of working fluid velocities were investigated by a packed method of matrix in the oscillating flow as the same condition of operation in a Stirling engine. As matrices, two different wire screens were used. The results are summarized as follows; 1. When a regenerator is not filled with any wire screen, working fluid velocity of the oscillating flow shows 1.3 times faster than that of one directional flow. 2. When a regenerator is filled with the wire screen of No.50, working fluid velocity of the oscillating flow reveals 2.5 times faster than that of one directional flow. 3. When a regenerator is filled with the wire screen of No. 100, working fluid velocity of the oscillating flow shows 2 times faster than that of one directional flow, regardless of the number of packed wire screens. 4. Working fluid velocity is decreased wire the increase in number of meshes and packed wire screens.

  • The sensitivity of Nash model parameters is analyzed about characteristic velocities considering geomorphological dispersion in the present study. And changing shape of IUH compared and analyzed as variation of characteristic velocities through numerical experiment. Application watersheds are selected 4 subwatersheds which are located at main stream of Bocheong basin. The mean and variance of hillslope and stream path length are estimated in each watershed with GIS. And Nash model parameters are estimated with moments of path lengths and characteristic velocities. The changing trend about IUH which is derived Nash model parameters are compared as variation of characteristic velocities. The Major results of this study are summarized as follows. The Nash model parameters sensitively present changes about hillslope characteristic velocity. And the effect of the peak discharge and shape of recession in IUH dominate with hillslope's characteristic velocity, the effect of the peak time and shape of ascension in IUH dominate with channel's characteristic velocity.

  • Horizontally polarized shear waves (SH) have numerous applications in various scientific, engineering, and medical fields. The study deals with an investigation of SH-waves in a thin microstructural plate. The plate has been mathematically modelled by employing size dependent consistent couple stress theory, which involves a length parameter, known as characteristic length. Characteristic length is assumed to be of the order of internal microstructures of the material. Dispersion relations have been calculated for the propagation of SH-waves using different set of boundary conditions. Group velocity of the SH-waves has been calculated by using an analytical approach. The mathematical results obtained in the problem are discussed in detail and the impacts of characteristic length parameter and thickness of plate are presented on phase velocity of SH-waves through graphical illustrations.

  • This study analyzed several storm events observed in the Seolma-chun basin to derive the characteristic velocity of GIUH (Geomophological Instantaneous Unit Hydrograph) as well as its variability. Especially, this study focused on the variation of characteristic velocity due to the change of rainfall characteristics. The IUH of the Seolma-chun basin was derived using the HEC-1, whose peak discharge and time were then compared with those of the GIUH to derive the characteristic velocities. The characteristics velocities were analyzed by comparing with the GcIUH (Geomorphoclimatic IUH) as well as the characteristics of rainfall. Results are summarized as follows. (1) The characteristic velocity of GIUH was estimated higher with higher variability than the GcIUH, but their trends were found similar (2) Total amount of effective rainfall (or, mean effective rainfall) well explains the characteristic velocity of GIUH. This could be assured by the regression analysis, whose coefficient of determination was estimated about 0.6. (3) The duration and the maximum intensity of rainfall were found not to affect significantly on the characteristic velocity of GIUH. The coefficients of determination were estimated less than 0.3 for all cases considered. (4) For the rainfall events used in this study, the characteristic velocities of GIUH were found to follow the Gaussian distribution with its mean and the standard deviation 0.402 m/s and 0.173 m/s, respectively. Most of the values are within the range of 0.4∼0.5 m/s, and its coefficient of variation was estimated to be 0.43, much less than that of the runoff itself (about 1.0).

  • For the prediction of combustion performance of the Unlike Impinging Quadlet Injector (OOOF type), mixing efficiency, mixing characteristic velocity, and efficiency of mixing characteristic velocity were obtained from the cold test. Water/kerosene were used for simulants, The momentum ratio of oxidizer and fuel were mixing correlating parameter. Orifice discharge coefficient, spray pattern and mass distribution were measured. As a result, invasion-depth had strong effect on mixing efficiency, mixing characteristic velocity, and efficiency of mixing characteristic velocity. Mixing efficiency and efficiency of mixing characteristic velocity showed maximum value for momentum ratio 1.67(TMR = 2.5), and fuel rich state showed larger decreasing ratio than oxidizer rich state.
