  • This paper investigates effective methods for implementing motion matching, which is actively used in real-time motion generation applications. The success of motion matching heavily hinges on its simple definition of a feature vector, yet this very definition can introduce significant variance in the outcomes. Our research focuses on identifying the optimal combination of feature vectors that effectively generates desired trajectories in locomotion generation. To this end, we experimented with a range of feature vector combinations and performed an in-depth error analysis to evaluate the results.

  • There has been a revolutionary growth and advancement in the area of online game, though the history of online games is shorter than that of the other genre. Among the elements consisting of a game, the character customizing system has advanced poorly when compared with the other elements of a game system. The poor computer graphics technology hindered the emergence of a good quality of a character customizing system. However the need of users for the rich facial expressions together with the rapid advancement of the computer graphic technology have driven the customizing system to provide a high degree of freedom to the extent that items for the face assembly could generate new profits. This paper analyzed the Aion Customizing System based on the art of physiognomy where the facial features of people are studied and analyzed, in order to make various personalized characters to the extent of increased freedom. According to our design, the more sophisticated and complex and subtle character customization system can be devised following the proposed design.

  • In this paper, we present a simple and fast supervised learning framework based on model predictive control so as to learn motion controllers for a physic-based character to track given example motions. The proposed framework is composed of two components: training data generation and offline learning. Given an example motion, the former component stochastically controls the character motion with an optimal controller while repeatedly updating the controller for tracking the example motion through model predictive control over a time window from the current state of the character to a near future state. The repeated update of the optimal controller and the stochastic control make it possible to effectively explore various states that the character may have while mimicking the example motion and collect useful training data for supervised learning. Once all the training data is generated, the latter component normalizes the data to remove the disparity for magnitude and units inherent in the data and trains an artificial neural network with a simple architecture for a controller. The experimental results for walking and running motions demonstrate how effectively and fast the proposed framework produces physics-based motion controllers.

  • We introduce an instant and intuitive shadowing technique for CACAni System. In traditional 2D Anime, since all frames are drawn by hand it takes long time to create an entire animation sequence. CACAni System reduces such a production cost by automatic inbetweening and coloring. In this paper, we develop a shadowing technique that enables CACAni users to easily create shadow for character or object in the image. The only inputs required are sequences of character or object layers drawn in CACAni System with alpha value. Shadows are automatically rendered on a virtual plane based on these inputs. They can then be edited by CACAni users. Achieving this, CACAni System is able to handle instant shadowing and intuitive editing in a short time.

  • Recently, case presentations using AI functions such as ChatGPT are increasing in many industrial fields. As AI-based results emerge even in the areas of images and videos, traditional animation production tools are in need of significant changes. Unreal Engine is the tool that adapts most quickly to these changes, proposing a new animation production workflow by integrating tools such as Metahuman and Marvelous Designer. Working with realistic metahumans allows for the production of realistic and natural movements, such as those captured through motion capture data. Implementing this approach presents many challenges for production tools that adhere to traditional methods. In this study, we investigated the differences between the cell animation workflow and the computer graphics animation production workflow. We compared and analyzed whether these differences could be reduced by creating sample movements using character rigs in Maya and Cascadeur tools. Our results showed that a similar cell animation workflow could be constructed using the Cascadeur tool. To improve the accuracy of our conclusions, we created large, action-packed short animations to demonstrate and validate our findings.

  • Recently, the importance of the efficient production pipeline design has been increased for 3D animation, which becomes more delicate. In this paper, we propose 3D animation character development pipeline using 3D printing technology. We introduce 3D printing procedure into each step of the classical 3D animation and character development pipeline to incorporate the feed-back from the designer immediately. Specially, during the production step, we can find the design errors and minimize the period of production by using 3D printing of approximate shape of designed character. Using proposed method, eight DreaMegg characters were developed and their quality was very high with respect to 3D virtual graphics and real product. Using our method, high-quality 3D animation character can be developed with the minimized time and cost for development by reflecting the feed-back into production line from designers and researchers immediately.

  • As a software component for computer game, the physics engine simulates objects' movement according to the laws of physics. This paper introduces a design and implementation of mobile game on the Android platform, where we used JBox2D physics engine library and Android graphics APIs. We borrowed the key idea of this game from Crayon Physics which is known as a famous PC game. This game starts with no way from user character to destination character. The game user has to make a way to destination character from user character by creating polygon objects between them. The user wins when user character meets destination character. However, the game user has to decide the time to create objects and their shapes well because all objects in this game are governed by the laws of physics. As an important thing of this paper, we introduced into this game new input methods of LCD touch and sensors embedded in mobile devices but not in PCs. Game users can create objects by drawing polygons with LCD touch and move objects or characters according to sensor values from accelerator sensors by tilting the mobile device.

  • Uncanny Valley is a theory proposed by Japanese robot engineer Masahiro Mori in 1970, and refers to the point where the likability drops sharply when the appearance of a robot becomes very similar to a human being without a fully equipped robot. In this study, the theory of existing literature, related papers, and experimental data were analyzed to examine the Uncanny Valley effect that affects character design. The purpose of this study is to analyze whether the Uncanny Valley effect is applied to modeling virtual characters distributed in the Unreal Engine Marketplace. To this end, 15 characters were selected based on the similarity with humans in the Marketplace of the Unreal Engine, and similarity with humans and likability were investigated and analyzed. As a result of the experiment, it was confirmed that the Uncanny Valley effect was similarly applied to virtual character modeling, and through this, guidelines for the use of characters by indie game developers or individual developers using Unreal engines were presented. In addition, through result analysis, we tried to examine the direction to be pursued when designing characters.

  • The establishment of a production pipeline imported 30 computer graphics is suggested in this paper to improve the efficiency of existing production pipeline of clay animation. The point is that the process of building clay characters that remains labor intensive among the existing procedures is replaced by the process of creating computer generated characters. In order to create characters out of clay by means of 30 computer graphics, a diffuse map and displacement map are made of an oil-based clay according to the UVW coordination of polygon modeling, which is the same color and kind of clay used to make a clay character. In addition, a panoramic HDRI recording system is developed to record the lighting information of shooting environment for miniature sets, which is imported in 3D computer graphic tools as digital light source. On account of the new production pipeline, a hyper realistic rendering image can be produced, and at the same time it improves the traditional pipeline of stop motion animation that is know-how based procedure of a complete artist by the engineering approach to the automatic process.

  • Since the advent of digital games, game of the core platform has been changed from the arcade to the mobile device. I consider that I try to seek the direction of the use of game which works for PC and mobile in comparison to analyze the changes in the game graphics. Effects of three types of game platforms on the game graphics, change depends on the game of the genre and game graphics. By reduction of the screen size, a new interface was appeared. However, as directly applying the PC version of the interface, it has brought about a user's inconvenience. I have found that mobile hardware development have not been affecting the game graphics. The common point of PC and mobile, they both have the limit of the platform which they own. There is a need to take into account the differences of graphically elements to use the player language interface.
