  • A numerical optimization procedure for the shape of three-dimensional channel with angled ribs mounted on one of the walls to enhance turbulent heat transfer is presented. The response surface method is used as an optimization technique with Reynolds-averaged Wavier-Stokes analyses of flow and heat transfer. SST turbulence model is used as a turbulence closure. Computational results for local heat transfer rate show reasonable agreements with experimental data. The pitch-to-height ratio of the rib and rib height-to-channel height ratio are set to be 9.0 and 0.1, respectively, and width-to-rib height ratio and attack angle of the rib are chosen as design variables. The objective function is defined as a linear combination of heat-transfer and friction-loss related terms with weighting factor. Full-factorial experimental design method is used to determine the data points. Optimum shapes of the channel have been obtained in the range from 0.0 to 0.1 of weighting factor.

  • This work presents numerical optimization for design of staggered arrays of dimples printed on opposite surfaces of a cooling channel with a fast and elitist Non-Dominated Sorting of Genetic Algorithm (NSGA-II) of multi-objective optimization. As Pareto optimal front produces a set of optimal solutions, the trends of objective functions with design variables are predicted by hybrid multi-objective evolutionary algorithm. The problem is defined by three non-dimensional geometric design variables composed of dimpled channel height, dimple print diameter, dimple spacing and dimple depth to maximize heat transfer rate compromising with pressure drop. Twenty designs generated by Latin hypercube sampling were evaluated by Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes solver and the evaluated objectives were used to construct Pareto optimal front through hybrid multi-objective evolutionary algorithm. The optimum designs were grouped by k-mean clustering technique and some of the clustered points were evaluated by flow analysis. With increase in dimple depth, heat transfer rate increases and at the same time pressure drop also increases, while opposite behavior is obtained for the dimple spacing. The heat transfer performance is related to the vertical motion of the flow and the reattachment length in the dimple.

  • Brain-computer interface based on motor imagery is a system that transforms a subject's intention into a control signal by classifying EEG signals obtained from the imagination of movement of a subject's limbs. For the new paradigm, we do not know which positions are activated or not. A simple approach is to use as many channels as possible. The problem is that using many channels causes other problems. When applying a common spatial pattern (CSP), which is an EEG extraction method, many channels cause an overfit problem, in addition there is difficulty using this technique for medical analysis. To overcome these problems, we suggest a binary particle swarm optimization with channel impact factor in order to select channels close to the most important channels as channel selection method. This paper examines whether or not channel impact factor can improve accuracy by Support Vector Machine(SVM).

  • In this paper, two optimization algorithms based on artificial neural networks and genetic algorithms are proposed for cellular radio channel assignment problems. The channel assignment process is characterized as minimization of the energy function which represents constraints of the channel assignment problems. All three constraints such as the co-channel constraint, the adjacent channel constraint and the co-site channel constraint are considered. In the neural networks approach, certain techniques such as the forced assignment and the changing cell order are developed, and in the genetic algorithms approach, data structure and proper genetic operators are developed to find optimal solutions, As simulation results, the convergence rates of the two approaches are presented and compared.

  • A general procedure for the optimal design of a micro-channel heat exchanger for heat pump systems is presented. For this design, a performance analysis program that can reflect the various geometric variables of the micro-channel heat exchanger was developed. The deviation between simulated and experiment results of previous research was within 4% for the heat transfer rate. To prove the feasibility of the optimal design process, the performance of the reference heat exchanger was compared to that of the optimized heat exchanger. The $JF_{air}$ and PECv of the optimized heat exchanger were enhanced by 14% and 26%, respectively.

  • In this paper, a recursive digital filter realization for an ionospheric channel model is proposed. This realization is in the form of a cascade of identical second-order all-pass filters, and is determined by only three parameters; two coefficients of an all-pass section, and the number of sections. The values of these parameters are optimized by a nonlinear optimization algorithm called the "downhill simplex method", so that the resulting time delay function closely approximates that of the ionospheric channel model. Comparing with the nonrecursive digital filter realization, it can be shown that the proposed recursive-digital-filter-realization is advantageous in points of view for the numbers of filter coefficients and the realization.

  • This study presents a numerical procedure to optimize the shape of dimple surface to enhance turbulent heat transfer in a rectangular channel. The response surface based optimization method is used as an optimization technique with Reynolds-averaged Wavier-Stokes analysis of fluid flow and heat transfer with shear stress transport (SST) turbulence model. The dimple depth-to-dimple print diameter ratio, channel height-to-dimple print diameter ratio, and dimple print diameter-to-pitch ratio are chosen as design variables. The objective function is defined as a linear combination of heat transfer related term and friction loss related term with a weighting factor. full factorial method is used to determine the training points as a mean of design of experiment. The optimum shape shows remarkable performance in comparison with a reference shape.

  • Shape optimization of a Printed circuit heat exchanger (PCHE) has been performed by using three-dimensional Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes (3-D RANS) analysis and surrogate modeling techniques. The objective function is defined as a linear combination of effectiveness of the PCHE term and pressure drop in the cold channels of the PCHE. The cold channel angle and the ellipse aspect ratio of the cold channel are used as design variables for the optimization. Design points are selected through Latin-hypercube sampling. The optimal point is determined through surrogate-based optimization method which uses 3-D RANS analyses at design points. The results of three types of surrogate model are compared each other. The results of the optimizations indicate improved performance in friction loss but low performance in effectiveness than the reference shape.
