  • Developmental of photosynthetic pigments and changes in chlorophyll fluorescence of dark-grown rice seedlings were studied during greening. Light-illumination stimulated accumulations of total chlorophylls and carotenoids in leaves of etiolated seedlings, accompanied by a decrease in the ratio of chlorophyll a to chlorophyll b. When the composition of carotenoids was analyzed, violaxanthin level was shown to increase up to 24 h after the beginning of light illumination, followed by a subsequent decline. In contrast to this, zeaxanthin level increased consistently with progress of deetiolatin. The role of zeaxanthin is discussed in relation to chlorophyll fluorescence quenching. A study on chlorophyll fluorescence kinetics of the rice seedlings being deetiolated showed a time-dependent increase in Fv/Fm (yield of variable fluorescence/maximum yield of fluoresecnece) ratios, indicating that greening is responsible for the activation of photochemical reaction centers of the photosystem. When chlorophyll fluorescence quenching was examined, qNP (nonphotochemical quenching) and qE (energy-dependent quenching) exhibited a time-dependent decline with progress of greening. The presented results indicate that greening-induced development of the photosynthetic machinery is associated the conversion of the carotenoid violaxanthin to zeaxanthin, suggesting that zeaxanthin synthesized in the illuminated leaves may provide the protection from the damage when etiolated plants are exposed to light.

  • Carnegie-Ames-Stanford Approach (CASA) model is one of the most quick, convenient and accurate models to estimate the NPP (Net Primary Productivity) of vegetation. The purposes of this study are (1) to examine the spatial and temporal patterns of vegetation NPP of the paddy field area in Korea from 2002 to 2012, and (2) to investigate how the rice productivity responded to inter-annual NPP variability, and (3) to estimate rice yield in Korea using CASA model applied to MOderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) products and solar radiation. MODIS products; MYD09 for NIR and SWIR bands, MYD11 for LST, MYD15 for FPAR, respectively from a NASA web site were used. Finally, (4) its applicability is to be reviewed. For those purposes, correlation coefficients (linear regression for monthly NPP and accumulated NPP with rice yield) were examined to evaluate the spatial and temporal patterns of the relations. As a result, the total accumulated NPP and Sep. NPP tend to have high correlation with rice yield. The rice yield in 2012 was estimated to be 526.93kg/10a by accumulated NPP and 520.32 kg/10a by Sep. NPP. RMSE were 9.46kg/10a and 12.93kg/10a, respectively, compared with the yield forecast of the National Statistical Office. This leads to the conclusion that NPP changes in the paddy field were well reflected rice yield in this study.

  • Roles of nutrients in controlling plant diseases have been documented for a long time. Among the nutrients having impact on susceptibility/resistance to crop diseases, nitrogen is one of the most important nutrients for plant growth and development. In rice plants, excess nitrogen via fertilization in agricultural systems is known to increase susceptibility to the rice blast disease. Mechanisms underlying such phenomenon, despite its implication in yield and sustainable agriculture, have not been fully elucidated yet. A few research efforts attempted to link nitrogen-induced susceptibility to concomitant changes in rice plant and rice blast fungus in response to excess nitrogen. However, recent studies focusing on phytobiome are offering new insights into effects of nitrogen on interaction between plants and pathogens. In this review, I will first briefly describe importance of nitrogen as a key nutrient for plants and what changes excess nitrogen can bring about in rice and the fungal pathogen. Next, I will highlight some of the recent phytobiome studies relevant to nitrogen utilization and immunity of plants. Finally, I propose the hypothesis that changes in phytobiome upon excessive nitrogen fertilization contribute to nitrogen-induced susceptibility, and discuss empirical evidences that are needed to support the hypothesis.

  • The purpose of this study is identify chemical changes in yield components of soil using organic fertilizer for cultivating rice and establish reasonable methods of fertilization. In chemical change, comparing the control plot, the soil using organic fertilizer consistently for three years for cultivating rice showed an increase in pH and available phosphate in the experiment plots provided by the organic fertilizer, increase in spikelet number and 1000 grain weight in terms of yield components, and increase in yield in the three-year experiment plots. As for the quality of brown rice, the rate of head rice showed no difference when compared to that of the control plots. As for protein content, it was difficult to identify a statistical significance between the control plots and the experiment plots in 2009, but since 2010, the protein content of the experiment plots has been lower than that of the control plot, indicating that fertilization of organic fertilizer was effective in terms of rice quality. In conclusion, long-term use of organic fertilizer improved the chemical properties of soil and increased yield when compared to practical fertilization. Reasonable fertilization was identified to fertilize the nitrogen component of organic fertilizer to be a level of 12kg/10a.

  • The global rise in atmospheric $CO_2$ concentration and its associated climate change have significant effects on agricultural productivity and hydrological cycle. For food security and agricultural water resources planning, it is critical to investigate the impact of climate change on changes in agricultural productivity and water consumption. APEX-Paddy model, which is the modified version of APEX (Agricultural Policy/Environmental eXtender) model for paddy ecosystem, was used to evaluate rice productivity and evapotranspiration based on climate change scenario. Two study areas (Gimjae, Icheon) were selected and the input dataset was obtained from the literature. RCP (Representitive Concentration Pathways) based climate change scenarios were provided by KMA (Korean Meteorological Administration). Rice yield data from 1997 to 2015 were used to validate APEX-Paddy model. The effects of climate change were evaluated at a 30-year interval, such as the 1990s (historical, 1976~2005), the 2025s (2011~2040), the 2055s (2041~2070), and the 2085s (2071~2100). Climate change scenarios showed that the overall evapotranspiration in the 2085s reduced from 10.5 % to 16.3 %. The evaporations were reduced from 15.6 % to 21.7 % due to shortend growth period, the transpirations were reduced from 0.0% to 24.2 % due to increased $CO_2$ concentration and shortend growth period. In case of rice yield, in the 2085s were reduced from 6.0% to 25.0 % compared with the ones in the 1990s. The findings of this study would play a significant role as the basics for evaluating the vulnerability of paddy rice productivity and water management plan against climate change.

  • This studies was carried out to investigate the effects of long term application of organic matters for 21 years from 1979 to 1999. The organic matters were applicated 5 ton $ha^{-1}$ as rice straw and 10 ton $ha^{-1}$ as compost. The used soil was paddy soil of Junbuk series. The obtained results are as follows: For 21 years, the changes of organic matter content of sail was from 22g $kg^{-1}$ to 21g $kg^{-1}$ in the plot of no organic application, but from 25g $kg^{-1}$ to 29gkg^(-1) in the plot of organic matter application. The changes of cation excange capacity of soil were lower gradually in the plot of non-appilcation of organic matter, but were not changed in the plots of rice straw and compost appilcation. The changes of rice yield were highly decreased after 10 years in the plot of no organic matter application, but rice yield were not highly changed in the plot of organic matter application. As conclusion, sussesive application of organic matters is improving physico-chemical properties of soil and is increasing rice yield.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effect of long-term continuous application of fertilizers for rice cultivation. Changes of physical and chemical properties of paddy soil and the rice yield by continuous application of NPK fertilizers, ammonium sulphate, and urea over fifty years, from 1954 to 2003, were investigated. The rice yield index of each treatment were 100 of NPK plots, 84 of ammonium sulphate plots, 81 of urea plots, and 62 of no fertilizer plots. The variance of yield was large according to the quality of irrigation water. Nutrient uptakes by rice plants in ammonium sulphate and urea plots were significantly smaller than those in NPK plots; 86 and 75% in T-N, 79 and 82% in $P_2O_5$, 64 and 58% in $K_2O$, and 94 and 90% in $SiO_2$, respectively. Bulk density of soil in NPK plots significantly decreased compared to those in no fertilizer, ammonium sulphate, and urea plots, whereas CEC in NPK plots increased compared to other plots. Soil pHs of all plots were higher than that before experiment which was 5.2; 6.0 in no fertilizer, 5.9 in urea and NPK, and 5.4 in ammonium sulphate plots. The available phosphate in soil increased by $2.5mg\;kg^{-1}\;yr^{-1}$ when $70kg\;ha^{-1}$ of P fertilizer applied for rice cultivation, and decreased by $1.8mg\;kg^{-1}\;yr^{-1}$ when no P fertilizer applied.

  • The atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration is ever-increasing and expected to reach about 600 ppmv some time during next century. Such an increase of $CO_2$ may cause a warming of the earth's surface of 1.5 to 4.5$^{\circ}C$, resulting in great changes in natural and agricultural ecosystems. The climatic scenario under doubled $CO_2$ projected by general circulation model of Goddard Institute for Space Studies(GISS) was adopted to evaluate the potential impact of climate change on agroclimatic resources, net primary productivity and rice productivity in Korea. The annual mean temperature was expected to rise by 3.5 to 4.$0^{\circ}C$ and the annual precipitation to vary by -5 to 20% as compared to current normal climate (1951 to 1980), resulting in the increase of possible duration of crop growth(days above 15$^{\circ}C$ in daily mean temperature) by 30 to 50 days and of effective accumulated temperature(EAT=∑Ti, Ti$\geq$1$0^{\circ}C$) by 1200 to 150$0^{\circ}C$. day which roughly corresponds to the shift of its isopleth northward by 300 to 400 km and by 600 to 700 m in altitude. The hydrological condition evaluated by radiative dryness index (RDI =Rn/ $\ell$P) is presumed to change slightly. The net primary productivity under the 2$\times$$CO_2$ climate was estimated to decrease by 3 to 4% when calculated without considering the photosynthesis stimulation due to $CO_2$ enrichment. Empirical crop-weather model was constructed for national rice yield prediction. The rice yields predicted by this model under 2 $\times$ $CO_2$ climatic scenario at the technological level of 1987 were lower by 34-43% than those under current normal climate. The parameters of MACROS, a dynamic simulation model from IRRI, were modified to simulate the growth and development of Korean rice cultivars under current and doubled $CO_2$ climatic condition. When simulated starting seedling emergence of May 10, the rice yield of Hwaseongbyeo(medium maturity) under 2 $\times$ $CO_2$ climate in Suwon showed 37% reduction compared to that under current normal climate. The yield reduction was ascribable mainly to the shortening of vegetative and ripening period due to accelerated development by higher temperature. Any simulated yields when shifted emergence date from April 10 to July 10 with Hwaseongbyeo (medium maturity) and Palgeum (late maturity) under 2 $\times$ $CO_2$ climate did not exceed the yield of Hwaseongbyeo simulated at seedling emergence on May 10 under current climate. The imaginary variety, having the same characteristics as those of Hwaseongbyeo except growth duration of 100 days from seedling emergence to heading, showed 4% increase in yield when simulated at seedling emergence on May 25 producing the highest yield. The simulation revealed that grain yields of rice increase to a greater extent under 2$\times$ $CO_2$-doubled condition than under current atmospheric $CO_2$ concentration as the plant type becomes more erect.

  • Changes of rice yield and soil physicochemical properties of the dry-seeded rice-barley double cropping system were investigated for 10 years from 1990 to 1999. Generally, seedling stand was more unstable in the rice-barley cropping system regardless of barley straw addition or removal than in the rice single cultivation as indicated by higher standard deviation of seedling stand across year. Rice yield in rice-barley double cropping cultivation was increased due to barley straw application starting from the second year, recording 2 to 19% increase (average of 9% for 10 years) due to higher spikelet number. Protein content and Mg/K equivalent ratio were similiar among the barley straw applied field, rice single crop and barley straw removed plots. Also, amylose content was not significantly different among cropping patterns. Physicochemical properties of soil was improved by applying the barley straw; soil porosity was higher and content of organic matter and cation exchange capacity of Ca increased but those of Mg and K did not differ.

  • In an effort to evaluate the economic value and durability of the expanded rice hull as substrates, changes in the physical and chemical properties of material and plant growth in that substrate were studied. Using and electron microscope, the structure of used and new expanded rice hull substrate was examined. Considerable decomposition was found in the substrate which had been used one to three times. Compactness and lowered porosity in the used substrates were probably caused by decomposition. The results of cation analysis showed the possible destruction of cell wall of rice hulls. Abundant $Ca^{2+}$ in the substrates used for two to three times also indicated the possibility of decomposition. In tomato yield comparison, 15.2% more yield of tomato fruit in a new substrates indicated the negative effects of decomposition of one-time used substrates. Yield decreased in the substrates used for three times. if perlite substrates is used for three years before renewal and the cost of the perlite renewal is counted. 65.3% saving in the cost will be realized with the use of an expanded rice hull substrate. Another positive effect of the expanded rice hull substrate is the decrease of environmental contamination.n.
