반지를 지키고자 하는 미들 사이즈의 난쟁이족인 호빗족과 반지를 손에 쥐어 제왕이 되고자 하는 여타의 부족간의 전쟁을 그린 비벤디유니버셜게임(Vivendi Universal Games)의 ' 반지의 제왕' 타이틀(Middle-Earth Online 포함) 제작에서 고심한 부분은‘원작자인 톨킨의 컨셉을 어떻게 기술로 표현할 수 있느냐’였다. 특히 그의 책에서 증거로 제시된 무자비한 야망 추구를 어떻게 나타내고 여러 개발자와 작자, 플랫폼과 게임의 전체 시리즈를 묶을 수 있는 음악을 만드는 것은 타이틀 제작에 있어 가장 큰 문제였다. 이번호에는 이 반지의 제왕 타이틀에서 출판사와 개발자 모두가 원하는 수준의 혁신적인 음악 구현을 어떻게 했는지 살펴본 후 혁신적인 음악 구현 시스템을 유지할 수 있는 프랜차이즈를 위한 진정한 음악 스타일 가이드를 제시한다.

Since 1997, when a new educational system that encourages faculties instead of departments in universities is first introduced, students have much more chance to choose and leave their majors than before. As a result, colleges of basic arts and sciences confront with a serious problem since lots of students have left their majors at the colleges. In this paper, we analyze and provide a predictive model for those students in a university using decision trees.

Although data mining promises a new paradigm to discover medical knowledge form a database, there are many problems to be solved before real application is feasible. We had the chance to provide a data set to be analyzed as a discovery challenge by using various data mining techniques at the PKDD conference. As data providers, we evaluated and discussed results and clarified problems.

This paper is concerned with developing a Multi-period Behavioral Model for the portfolio selection problem. The unique feature of the model is that it treats a number of factors and decision variables considered germane in decision making on an interrelated basis. The formulated problem has the structure of a Chance Constrained programming Model. Then empoloying arguments of Central Limit Theorem and normality assumption the stochastic model is reduced to that of a Non-Linear Programming Model. Finally, a number of interesting properties for the reduced model are established.

The problem of trend change in the mean residual life is great Interest in the reliability and survival analysis. In this paper, a new test statistic for testing whether or not the mean residual life changes its trend Is developed. It is assumed that neither the change point nor the proportion at which the trend change occurs is known. The asymptotic null distribution of test statistic is established and asymptotic critical values of the asymptotic null distribution is obtained. Monte Carlo simulation is used to compare the proposed test with previously known tests.

Recently Korean statistician have more chance to work with other researcher in other countries at international level. Especially the 53rd Scientist meeting of he International Statistical Institute(ISI) will be held in Seoul, Rep. of Korea at Aug 22-29, 2001. The fields of Statistics in Korea have been affected a lot from American Statistical Society. In this research communication, I would like to introduce a short history of he Italian statistical society and their major research topic and outputs. The contents will help us to understand the Italian statistician, and it can be a conner-stone to the future relationship between Korean statistician and Italian statistician.

Acute liver failure (ALF) is a very rare but devastating illness in children. Specific treatment to recovery is often not available, and the underlying cause of the liver failure is often unknown and diverse especially in children. Liver transplantation has increased the chance of survival; however it needs an optimal timing to reach the best result which is not familiar to pediatrician. This article discusses the current knowledge of the epidemiology, backgrounds and factors to be considered before establishing the treatment of ALF in children.

The Simpson's paradox is a paradoxical phenomenon which might occur when analyzing $2 \times 2$ contingency table. This paper considers the role of probability assignment of the experimental units in reducing the chances of Simpson's paradox. Numerical results are given to illustrate how the chance of Simpson's paradox behaves.

When the perforation of intrathoracic esophagus occurs in the presence of preexisting esophageal stricture, aggressive and definitive therapy often provides the only chance for patient salvage. Two adults suffering from intrathoracic esophageal perforation with underlying stricture underwent transhiatal esophagectomy. The perforations were due to esophageal instrumentation. Restoration of alimentary continuity with a primary cervical pharyngogastric anastomosis was carried out in one patient. Another patient underwent a cervical esophagostomy and had a subsequent colonic interposition 3 months later.
