  • A milling process with 45 degree chamfered inserts produces a perfect flat surface only in theory. It is due to many unwanted factors including thermal effect, dynamic effect, the problem of the controller used and the problem of accuracy of the machine tool. In this study, introduced is a method to improve the surface roughness by redesigning of the chamfer angle of the insert, which traditionally has been 45 degree. First, the relationship between the fixed machine coordinate and the relative coordinate on the insert is derived. This transfer matrix is used to determine the new insert angle to maximize the flatness of the machined surface. A newly designed insert is manufactured, and used to carry out the experiment. It is proved that she insert designed by the proposed method produced a much flatter surface than a traditional one.

  • CuFe$_2$O$_4$ ferrite was machined with cermet tools to clarify the machinability. The tool wear became the smallest at the cutting speed of 90m/min with the depth of cut of 0.2mm. The surface roughness became larger with increasing the cutting speed and the chamfer angle of tool. The tool with the chamfer angle of 15° showed the smallest wear. The surface roughness increased almost proportionally with the increase of chip size. The tool wear reduced with increasing feed in the depth of cut not more than 0.2mm.

  • In this paper, w epropose a new mehtod to represent the shape and to recognize the object. The shape description and the matching is implemented by using the distance transform on the morphological skeleton. The employed distance transform is the chamfer (3,4) distance transform, because the chamfer distance transform (CDT) has an approximate value to the euclidean distance. The 2-D object can be represented by means of the distribution of the distance transform on the morphological skeleton, the number of skeletons, the sum of the CDT, and the other features are employed as the mtching parameters. The matching method has the invariant features (rotation, translation, and scaling), and then the method is used effectively for recognizing the differently-posed objects and/or marks of the different shape and size.

  • In the case of heavy duty diesel engines, the Urea-SCR system is currently considered to reduce the NOx emission as a proved technology, and it is widely studied to get the high performance and durability. However, the nozzles to inject the urea-water solution into the exhaust pipe occur some problems, including the nozzle clogging, deposition of urea-water solution on the inner wall of the exhaust pipe, resulting in the production of urea salt. In this study, a swirl-type twin-fluid nozzle to produce more fine droplets was used as a method to solve the problems. The effect of the nozzle cap geometry, including the length to diameter ratio ($l_o/d_o$) and chamfer, on the spray characteristics were investigated experimentally. The length to diameter ratio of nozzle cap were varied from 0.25 to 1.125. The chamfer angle of the nozzle cap was constant at 90o. The mean velocity and droplet size distributions of the spray were measured using a 2-D PDA (phase Doppler analyzer) system, and the spray half-width, AMD (arithmetic mean diameter) and SMD (Sauter mean diameter) were analyzed. At result, The larger length to diameter ratio of nozzle cap were more small SMD and AMD. The effect of the chamfer did increase the radial velocity, while it did not affect the atomization effect.

  • This paper presents a numerical and experimental study of sloshing loads on liquefied natural gas (LNG) vessels. Conventional LNG carriers with membrane-type cargo systems have filling restrictions from 10% to 70% of tank height. The main reason for such restrictions is high sloshing loads around these filling depths. However, intermediate filling depths cannot be avoided for most LNG vessels except the LNG carrier. This study attempted to design a membrane-type LNG tank with a modified lower-chamfer shape that allows all filling operations. First, numerical sloshing analysis was carried out to find an efficient height of the lower-chamfer that can reduce sloshing pressure at partially filled conditions. The numerical sloshing analysis program SHI-SLOSH was used for numerical simulation; this program is based on SOLA-VOF. The effectiveness of the newly designed tanks was validated by 1:50-scale three-dimensional tank tests. A total of three different tanks were tested: a conventional tank and two modified tanks. As test conditions, various filling depths and wave periods were considered, and the same test conditions were applied to the three tanks. During the test, slosh-induced dynamic pressures were measured around the corners of the tank wall. The measured pressure data were post-processed and the pressures of the three different tanks were statistically compared in several ways. Experimental results show that the modified tanks were quite effective in reducing sloshing loads at low filling conditions. This study demonstrated the possibility of all filling operations for LNG cargo containment systems.

  • This study was aimed to evaluate the effects of ultrasonic vibration on margin types and cements by comparing bond strength of cemented crown. In this study, margins of each metal die, which were chamfer, shoulder and shoulder with bevel, were prepared using computer milling machine. Specimens were cemented with zinc phosphate cement or resin cement. The specimens were divided by the finish line and cement used, ultrasonic vibration. I made total 84 specimens. All specimens were divided into two groups. One group was not vibrated, the other group was subjected to ultrasonic vibration for 12 minutes. Tensile bond strength was measured using Universial testing machine. The changes of bond strength in groups were statistically analyzed by t-test or One-way ANOVA. The results were as follows : 1. Ultrasonic instrumentation diminished the bond strength of crown cemented with zinc phosphate cement and resin cement after 12 minutes application. 2. In case of zinc phosphate cement, the bond strength of a vibrated group was showed significantly decreased(p<0.05). In vibrated groups with zinc phosphate cement, shoulder with bevel exhibit a significant difference to chamfer and shoulder(p<0.05) 3. Resin cement was more resistant to ultrasonic vibration than zinc phosphate cement and showed no significant differences according to ultrasonic vibration and margin type. In conclusion, These results revealed that zinc phosphate cement was most affected and resin cement was the least affected by ultrasonic vibration. Especially shoulder with bevel design was most affected in zinc phosphate cement groups. we should consider these results and be taken in the application of ultrasonic vibration to any teeth restored with crowns.

  • PURPOSE. To investigate the effect of reducing tooth preparation and ceramic thickness on fracture resistance of lithium disilicate crowns. MATERIALS AND METHODS. Specimen preparation included a standard complete crown preparation of a typodont mandibular left first molar with an occlusal reduction of 2 mm, proximal/axial wall reduction of 1.5 mm, and 1.0 mm deep chamfer (Group A). Another typodont mandibular first molar was prepared with less tooth reduction: 1 mm occlusal and proximal/axial wall reduction and 0.8 mm chamfer (Group B). Twenty crowns were milled from each preparation corresponding to control group (n=5) and conditioned group of simultaneous thermal and mechanical loading in aqueous environment (n=15). All crowns were then loaded until fracture to determine the fracture load. RESULTS. The mean (SD) fracture load values (in Newton) for Group A were 2340 (83) and 2149 (649), and for Group B, 1752 (134) and 1054 (249) without and with fatigue, respectively. Reducing tooth preparation thickness significantly decreased fracture load of the crowns at baseline and after fatigue application. After fatigue, the mean fracture load statistically significantly decreased (P<.001) in Group B; however, it was not affected (P>.05) in Group A. CONCLUSION. Reducing the amount of tooth preparation by 0.5 mm on the occlusal and proximal/axial wall with a 0.8 mm chamfer significantly reduced fracture load of the restoration. Tooth reduction required for lithium disilicate crowns is a crucial factor for a long-term successful application of this all-ceramic system.

  • Purpose : The purpose of this study was to compare the fracture resistance of the IPS Empress ceramic crown with 1.0mm width rounded shoulder, which is usually recommended in all ceramic crown. and 0.5mm width chamfer finish lines on the maxillary central incisor. Material and method : After 15 metal dies were made for each group, the IPS Empress all ceramic crowns were fabricated and cemented with resin cement(Bistite resin cement, Tokuyama Soda Co. LTD., Japan) on the metal die. The cemented crowns were mounted on the positioning jig and the universal testing machine(Zwick Z020, Zwick Co. Germany)was used to measure the fracture strength with loading on the incisal edge. And also, three-dimensional finite element stress analysis was used to measure the stress distribution with the various types of the finish lines(1.0mm width rounded shoulder, 0.5mm width chamfer), the loading site(incisal edge, incisal $\frac{1}{3}$) and the type of loading(concentration loading, distribution loading). Results and conclusion : 1. In the fracture resistance experiment according to the finish line, the mean fracture strength of rounded shoulder(876N) and the mean fracture strength of chamfer(882N) did not skew any significant difference between each other(p>0.05). 2. The stress distribution of all ceramic crown in three dimensional finite element analysis showed concentration aspect at loading point and cervical area or labial surface. 3. In metal die, there were no differences in stress distribution between finish lines, but in natural teeth model, chamfer finish line showed higher stress than rounded shoulder finish line. 4. When force was loaded on the incisal edge the stress was concentrated on the incisal edge and the cervical area of labial surface. When force was loaded on the incisal $\frac{1}{3}$, the stress concentrated on the cervical area of labial surface and the cingulum area. 5. Generally, natural teeth model showed higher and various stress than the metal die.
