The usual ceramic process of mixing and milling in state of oxide of $ZrO_2$ and $CeO_2$ was adopted in wet process to manufacture Ce-TZP in this study. The maximum dispersion point of every slurry manufactured with mixture of $ZrO_2$ and $CeO_2$ was neat at pH10. The stable slurry in average particle size of 90 nm can be manufactured when it is dispersed with use of ammonia water and polycarboxylic acid ammonium. The sintered Ce-TZP ceramics manufactured with addition of $CeO_2$ less than 10 mol% was progressed to the fracture of specimen due to the monoclinic phase existence more than 30% at the room temperature. More than 99% of tetragonal phase was created for the sintered body with addition of $CeO_2$ beyond 18 mol%, but the mechanical property degrade on the entire specimen was brought due to the $CeO_2$ existing above 3%. Consequently, the optimal Ce-TZP combined in oxide state was identified in 16 mol% of $CeO_2$ contents.
The possibility of cerium dioxide (CeO$_{7}$ ) thin films as insulators of metal erroelectric insulator semiconductor (MFIS) structures have been studied. The etching CeO$_2$ thin films have been performed in an inductively coupled C1$_2$/CF$_4$/Ar plasma. The high etch rate of the CeO$_2$ thin film was 250 ${\AA}$/m at a 10% addition of Cl$_2$ into the Ar(80)/CF$_4$(20). The surface reaction of the etched CeO$_2$ thin films was investigated using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis. There are Ce-Cl and Ce-F bonding by chemical reaction between Cl, F and Ce. These products can be removed by the physical bombardment of incident Ar ions.
Cerium oxide thin film has been proposed as a buffer layer between the ferroelectric film and the Si substrate in Metal-Ferroelectric-Insulator-Silicon (MFIS ) structures for ferroelectric random access memory (FRAM) applications. In this study, CeO$_2$ thin films were etched with Cl$_2$/Ar gas combination in an inductively coupled plasma (ICP). The highest etch rate of CeO$_2$ film is 230 $\AA$/min at Cl$_2$/(Cl$_2$+Ar) gas mixing ratio of 0.2. This result confirms that CeO$_2$ thin film is dominantly etched by Ar ions bombardment and is assisted by chemical reaction of Cl radicals. The selectivity of CeO$_2$ to YMnO$_3$ was 1.83. As a XPS analysis, the surface of etched CeO$_2$ thin films was existed in Ce-Cl bond by chemical reaction between Ce and Cl. The results of XPS analysis were confirmed by SIMS analysis. The existence of Ce-Cl bonding was proven at 176.15 (a.m.u.).
Silica-based ceramic-matrix composites have shown promise as advanced materials for many applications such as chemical catalysts, ceramics, pharmaceuticals, and electronics. $SiO_2$-CuO-$CeO_2$ multi-component powders and their thin film, using an oxalic acid template as a chelating agent, have larger surface areas and more uniform pore size distribution than those of inorganic acid catalysts. $SiO_2$-CuO-$CeO_2$ composite powders were synthesized using tetraethylorthosilicate, copper (II) nitrate hemi (pentahydrate), and cerium (III) nitrate hexahydrate with oxalic acid as template or pore-forming agent. The process of thermal evolution, the phase composition, and the surface morphology of these powders were monitored by thermogravimetry-differential thermal analysis (TG-DTA), X-ray diffractometry (XRD), field-emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), and energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDXS). The mesoporous property of the powders was observed by Brunner-Emmett-Teller surface (BET) analysis. The improved surface area of this powder template with oxalic acid was $371.4m^2/g$. This multi-component thin film on stainless-steel was prepared by sol-gel dip coating with no cracks.
$Eu^{3+}/Tb^{3+}$ co-doped nanocomposite containing $CeO_2$ nanocrystals was successfully prepared by an in situ sol-gel polymerization approach. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy demonstrated the homogeneous precipitation of $CeO_2$ nanocrystals among the polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) matrix. The thermal stability and UV-shielding capability of the obtained nanocomposite were improved with increase of $CeO_2$ content. The tuning of the emissive color from green and yellow to red can be easily achieved by varying the dopant species and concentration. These results suggested that the obtained nanocomposite could be potentially applicable in transparent solid-state luminescent devices.

The corrosion protection of AA2024 PPy coated samples doping with nanosized metal oxides, including $TiO_2$ and $CeO_2$ nanoparticles and $Nd_2O_3$ nanorods, during exposure to the solutions of 0.1 M $H_2SO_4$ and 3.5% NaCl was evaluated by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and linear polarization resistance (LPR) techniques. The nanorods of $Nd_2O_3$ were synthesized by cathodic pulse electrochemical deposition technique. The barrier properties of the different PPy coatings containing nanosized metal oxides immersed in $H_2SO_4$ solution were ranked as follows: $Nd_2O_3$ > $TiO_2$ > $CeO_2$. Therefore, the $Nd_2O_3$ coating sample provided the highest corrosion protection at any time of immersion up to 72 hours after immersing in $H_2SO_4$ solution. On the other hand, the $CeO_2$ coating sample displayed the best anticorrosive properties among the other coating samples after immersion in NaCl solution up to 28 days. This is due to the inhibition effect of cerium ions on aluminum alloys at near-neutral solutions.
The cerium ion intercalated aluminosilicate was prepared by ion exchange reaction between $Na^+$ in montmorillonite and $Ce^{+4}$ in aqueous solution. The X-ray absorption near edge structrure(XANES) analyses indicate that the $Ce^{+4}$ ions are partially reduced to the $Ce^{+3}$ ones during the intercalation into layered aluminosilicate due to a charge transfer between host and intercalant. From the EXAFS analysis, two different (Ce-O) bonding pairs could be characterized with the distances and coordination numbers of 2.31 $({\pm}0.02){\AA}$${\times}$ 8.2 $({\pm}1.5)$ and 2.66 $({\pm}0.02){\AA}$${\times}$ 2.7 $({\pm}1.0)$, respectively, with the oxygen atoms as the first nearest neighbor, and two (Ce-Ce) pairs at 3.78 ${\AA}$ as the second neighbor. It is therefore concluded that the most probable Ce-species stabilized in the interlayer space of aluminosilicate after the intercalation is the tetrameric Ce-polyoxy/hydorxy cations with the mixed valent state of 0.75 $Ce^{+4}$.0.25 $Ce^{+3}$.

Objective : To perform a comparative analysis of therapeutic effects associated with two different shapes of ceria nanoparticles, ceria nanorods (Ceria NRs) and ceria nanospheres (Ceria NSs), in an in vitro model of traumatic brain injury (TBI). Methods : In vitro TBI was induced using six-well confluent plates by manually scratching with a sterile pipette tip in a 6×6-square grid. The cells were then incubated and classified into cells with scratch injury without nanoparticles and cells with scratch injury, which were treated separately with 1.16 mM of Ceria NSs and Ceria NRs. Antioxidant activities and anti-inflammatory effects were analyzed. Results : Ceria NRs and Ceria NSs significantly reduced the level of reactive oxygen species compared with the control group of SH-SY5Y cells treated with Dulbecco's phosphate-buffered saline. The mRNA expression of superoxide dismutases was also reduced in nanoparticle-treated SH-SY5Y cells, but apparently the degree of mRNA expression decrease was not dependent on the nanoparticle shape. Exposure to ceria nanoparticles also decreased the cyclooxygenase-2 expression, especially prominent in Ceria NR-treated group than that in Ceria NS-treated group. Conclusion : Ceria nanoparticles exhibit antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects in TBI models in vitro. Ceria NRs had better anti-inflammatory effect than Ceria NSs, but showed similar antioxidant activity.
Ceramics of quaternary garnets (Gd,Y)3Al2Ga3O12 doped with Ce, Tb have been fabricated and evaluated as prospective materials for indirect energy converters of α-and β-voltaic. Samples were characterized at excitation with an X-ray source and an intense 150 keV electron beam and showed good temperature stability of their emission and tolerance to irradiation. The role of X-rays accompanied the α-particle emitting in the increase of the conversion efficiency is clarified. The garnet-type structure of the matrix in the developed materials allows the production of quality crystalline mass with a light yield exceeding that of the commonly used YAG: Ce scintillator by a factor of two times.
