  • The zoantharians and ceriantiparians known from the Korea Strait are 21 species, 16 genera, 10 families in 3 orders, of which 6 species are newly recorded to the Korea Strait fauna. Three species of them are new to Korean waters: Flosmaria mustsuensis, Hormathia andersoni and Verrillactis paguri. The specimens were collected from 34 localities of Korea Strait from 1984 to 1991.

  • Systematic relationship of 13 species representing seven orders of anthozoans, and one hydrozoan as an outgroup, were investigated. Distance and parsimony methods were used to analyze nucleotide sequence data obtained from the 18S rDNA. The inferred phylogeny indicates that two orders, Ceriantharia and Antipatharia within subclass Ceriantipatharia, are not closely related to each other. Instead, the former appears to be the most ancestral group among anthozoans but the latter is more closely related to order Actiniaria within subclass Zoantharia. The result also indicates that the actiniarian may not be a monophyletic group, because Epiactis Japonica is related more to order Scleractinia. Subclass Octocorallia appears to be a monophyletic group, within which order Pennatulacea diversed at first, and then orders Alcyonacea and Gorgonacea diversed later.

  • The antipatharians in Korea were known with three species and two genera belonging to family Antipathidae. In the present study, three species, Antipathes densa, A. grandiflora, and A. dubia, have been newly recorded to Korean antipatharian fauna with the samples collected from Jeju-do during the period from 2003 to 2005. The description was mainly based on the habitat, the branching mode of corallums, the size and arrangement of polyps and spines on the axis, and also the types of cnidae. They had three kinds of cnidae: spirocyst, basitrich, and microbasic p-mastigophore. Spirocysts and basitrichs were distributed at tentacles and microbasic p-mastigophores were mainly at septal filaments.
