Viscosity Study to Optimize a Slurry of Alumina Mixed with Hollow Microspheres

  • Porous alumina ceramics are involved in many industrial applications due to the exceptional properties of these products. This study addresses the preparation of porous alumina ceramics using hollow microspheres as a pore-forming agent and slip casting as a green-body-forming technique. A uniform distribution of pores is a basic requirement of a porous material. This study investigates three different slurry systems, i.e., as-prepared alumina slurry, alumina slurry electrostatically dispersed by hydrochloric acid (HCl), and slurry dispersed by the commercial dispersant 'Darvan C-N'. At a low viscosity, the hollow microspheres in the slurry tend to float, which causes a non-uniform pore distribution. To avoid this phenomenon, the viscosity of the slurry was increased to the extent that the movement of hollow microspheres ceased in the slurry. As a result, a uniform pore distribution was achieved.

  • In order to develope hydroxyapatite ceramics which has mechanical strength as bio-implant materials and get the basic data for the study and application of biocompatibility, hydroxyapatite was synthesized at Ca/P=1.67~1.75, pH 7~11 by precipitation method. Using prepared powders, the sintered body, fluorine substituted body and the porous body was formed and their properties were investigated. The sample obtained in condition of Ca/P=1.67, pH 7 and sintering at 1,15$0^{\circ}C$ was decomposed to $\beta$-tricalcium phosphate, and co-existed with hydroxyapatite. Hydroxyapatite synthesized at pH 11 was not easily decomposed to $\beta$-tricalcium phosphate at sintering process. The substitution of a small amount of fluorine for hydroxyapatite prevented hydroxyapatite from being decompsed to $\beta$-tricalcium phosphate. Hydroxyapatite ceramics which substited of 10% fluorine was prepared at 1,15$0^{\circ}C$, and the valueof bending strength for this body were found to be 112MPa.

  • Hydroxyapatite powders were synthesized with Ca/P=1.67, 1.70 and pH=7, 11 by precipitation method and fluorine substituted hydroxyapatite ceramics were prepared using these powders. After characterization of these hydorxyapatite bioceramics, chemical bonding between these sepcimens in simulated body fluid was investigated. Bysubstitution of 7.5% of fluorine, hydroxyapatite was prevented to decompose into β-tricalcium phosphate and its sintered density and mechanical strength were increased. The bending strength of these hydroxyapatite ceramics was 137MPa. The hydroxyapatite ceramics chemically bonded each other in Ringer's solution and the component of bonded layer was also hydroxyapatite.

L$_1$-B$_4$모드 선형 초음파 전동기의 제작과 운전 특성 (Fabrication and Operation Characteristics of Linear Ultrasonic Motor)

  • In this paper, a linear ultrasonic motor using piezoelectric ceramics was fabricated, and its operation characteristics were investigated. A linear ultrasonic motor using L$_1$-B$_4$model was composed of a stator and a rotor, and a stator was composed of piezoelectric ceramics and a elastic body. When applied frequency and voltage were 58.4kHz and 56V respectively, the feeding speed of the motor was 19.8 cm/s. A linear ultrasonic motor could be moved in left and right directions by the phase difference. Feeding speed and feeding force of a linear ultrasonic motor could be controlled by applied voltage. A linear ultrasonic motor had a droping torque-speed characteristic. The maximum efficiency of linear ultrasonic motor was 2.14%. Therefore, this linear ultrasonic motor can be expected to be used for a card-forwarding device, such as a card reader device and so on.

Improvement of Glaze Hardness in Commercial Bone China

  • In order to improve the hardness of commercial bone china, we attempted to control the glost firing temperature and apply a chemical strengthening process. When the glost firing time was longer or its temperature was higher than normal conditions, the hardness was improved by approximately 5%. The chemical strengthening process also enhanced the hardness of the glaze by more than 13% compared with bone china. It is believed that the enhancement of the hardness of the glaze was related to the development of residual compressive stress in the glaze due to 1) the increase in the calcium phosphate phase in the interface layer between the body and the glaze after firing, and 2) the increase of the $K^+$ concentration on the glaze surface during the chemical strengthening process.

정사각틀 초음파 모터의 변위 특성 (Displacement Characteristics of the Square-frame Ultrasonic Motor)

  • A novel design of a simple square-frame USM (ultrasonic motor) was proposed. The stator of the motor consists of a square-frame shape elastic body and four rectangular plate ceramics. The four ceramics were attached to inner surfaces of the square frame elastic body. The same phase voltages were applied to the ceramics on horizontal surfaces, and 90 degree phase difference voltage were applied to the ceramics on vertical surfaces. To find a model that generates elliptical motion at outside of the stator, the finite element analysis program ATILA was used. The analyzed results were compared to the experimental results. As result, the model EL10EH3ET0.5CL4 which generates the maximum elliptical displacement was chosen by analyzing the resonance mode according to changes in frequency.

Formaldehyde Deodorization Effect and Far-Infrared Emission Characteristics of Ceramics Prepared with Sawdust, Risk Husk, and Charcoal: Effect of Material Mixing Ratio

  • Indoor air quality is a very important environmental factor in modern society. However, air pollutants generated from various interior construction materials significantly affect the human body, including formaldehyde (HCHO) and volatile organic compounds that threaten public health by deteriorating indoor air quality. Effective in removing these harmful substances are porous materials, such as woodceramics. In this study, charcoal, a porous material, was added to rice husk, an agricultural by-product, and sawdust generated during the sawing process to prepare boards and ceramics at different mixing ratios, and the HCHO deodorization performance and far-infrared emission characteristics were measured. As the mixing ratio of charcoal increased, the deodorization rate of the boards and ceramics tended to increase. Overall, the deodorization rate was measured to be 80% to 90%, indicating that the boards and ceramics prepared with charcoal are suitable to be used for the purpose of deodorization. The effect of the material mixing ratio on far-infrared emissivity and emission power was insignificant.

결정화 소결에 의한 생체활성재료의 제조 (Preparation of bioactive materials by crystallization sintering)

  • CaO-$SiO_2-P_2O_5$ 3성분계 유리화 영역(glass forning region)내의 여러조성(A:$SiO_2$- rich조성, B:CaO-rich조성, C:$P_2O_5$-rich조성, D, E:A, B, C의 중간조성)을 가지는 유리분말을 결정화시켰을 때 유리중에 석출되는 결정상(crystal phase)을 분말 XRD로 확인하였다. 여러조성중 apatite(($Ca_{10}(PO_4)_6O$)와 $\beta$-wollastonite($CaSiO_3$)결정이 석출되고, 굽힘강도가 우수한 E조성(CaO 49.4, $SiO_2\;36.8,\;P_2O_5$8.8wt%)을 선택하여 이 조성의 유리분말을 일방향으로 결정화 소결하였다. 제조된 결정화 소결체에 대하여 charaterization을 하고 굽힘강도를 측정하였다. 또한 결정화 소결체와 생체뼈와의 결합성을 조사하기 위하여 유사체액(simulated body fluid)내에서 침적실험을 하였으며, 결정화 소결체의 표면을 thin-film XRD, FT-IR로 분석하였다. 실험결과, apatite와 wollastonite 결정이 석출된 치밀한 결정화 소결체가 얻어졌으며, 이들 결정은 wollastonite 결정의 (202)면이 인상방향에 수직으로 성장하는 경향을 보였다. 또한 제조된 결정화 소결체는 평균 186.9MPa의 굽힘강도를 나타내어 일반적 방법으로 제조되는 결정화 소결체보다 높은 역학적 성질을 보였다. 유사체액내의 침적실험결과, 시료표면위에 apatite 결정층이 3일후부터 형성되어 생체뼈와 화학결합을 이룰 가능성이 있음을 알았다.
