  • The fracture strength and fracture modes were studied in 3Y-TZP/NiNi bonding which change their interfacial structure with bonding condition. Average 4-point bending strength of 200 MPa to 400 MPa were achieved. The formation of Ti-oxide phase at the interface critically influenced the bonding strength and fracture mode. The fracture surface of Ti-oxide free interface contained multiphase in some case including ZrO2. From the result it was confirmed that in order to maximize the bonding strength crack deflection from interface to ceramic was required.

  • Fracture surfaces of materials contain useful information ranging from crack path to the mechanism of fracture. Since limitation of electron transparency requires a sample in the form of thin foil for TEM observations, it is impossible to extract such information directly from the fracture surfaces. In this study, the method of surface replication from the ceramic fracture surface is employed to characterize the process of crack propagation in ceramic matrix composites using TEM analysis. The surface replica from the fracture surface in ceramic materials provides detailed surface morphology and more importantly, loosened particles on the fracture surface are collected. Electron diffraction and chemical composition analyses of these particles reveal crack path in the specimen. Furthermore, one can determine the mode of fracture by observing the fracture surface morphology from the image of replica. Two examples are given to illustrate the potential of the surface replication technique. In the first example, apparent toughness increase in $B_{4}C-Al$ composites at high strain rate is investigated by surface replication to elucidate the mechanism of fracture at different strain rates. The polytypes of SiC formed during the sintering of SiC-AlN composite and their effect on the fracture behavior of SiC-AlN composite are analyzed in the second example.

  • This paper presents the influence of the loading rate on the room temperature fracture toughness of a brittle Al2O3 and a SiC whisker reinforced Al2O3 composite. Dynamic fracture toughness tests were conduced using compressive fatigue pre-cracked notched round bars loaded in tension to produce a stress intensity rate K1=106 MPa√m/sec. The experimental results show that for each loading rate the fracture toughness values obtained for the ceramic matrix composite are higher than the corresponding values for the single phase alumina. In addition, both the reinforced and unreinforced ceramic are singnificantly tougher under dynamic loading than static loading. This dynamic and quasi-static fracture initiation behaviro can be interpreted by identifying quantitatively the mode of fractuer initiation as a function of loading rate.

  • Early fracture and cutting force of ceramic tool for hardened STC3 steel was investigated in this study. It was found that early fracture of ceramic tool was mostly occurred before normal wear was progressed beyond a critical cutting speed and normal wear was performed under the critical cutting speed. The relationships among critical cutting speed, which was a cause of early fracture, suggested cutting cross section, that is, maximum thickness of cut and width of cut, and cutting force were examined. The following conclusions were obtained: (1)Critical cutting speed showed a high value in the case of small maximum thickness of cut and large nose radius, but was not influenced by width of cut, (2)Principal, feed and radial force, respectively, showed the proportional value to constant cutting area, width of cut and maximum thickness of cut orderly, (3)Occurrence of early fracture was dependent upon radial force.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect on the fracture strength and color of ceramic by the design of the metal coping in ceramo metal crown. In this study, four types of ceramic crowns were made for fracture strength : standard ceramo metal crown, collariess ceramo metal crown, modified ceramo metal crown, and ceramic jacket crown. And three types of disk formed-specimens were made to compare the dentin shade owing to aluminous opaque powder and palladium alloy. Fracture strength was measured by universal testing machine(Instron Co. Ltd., U.S.A) and color was measured by color and color difference meter(Yasuda Seiki Seisakusho, Ltd., Japan). The results were as follows : 1. The fracture strength of ceramic was affected significantly by the design of metal coping in ceramo metal crown. The mean fracture strength(192.0 Kg) of standard ceramo metal crown was about 1.7 times higher than that(111.5 Kg) of collarless ceramo metal crown, and about 2.8 times higher than that(67.8 Kg) of ceramic jacket crown. 2. Modified ceramo metal crown that has metal band in the labio cervical had the lowest fracture strength. 3. Lightness, yellowness and redness of the dentin fired were decreased by the metal coping.

  • Dense $Al_2$O$_3$-30%TiC and Si$_3$N$_4$ ceramic tool materials with various grain size were produced by sintering-HIP treatment and by gas-pressure sintering. The fracture toughness was measured by indentation fracture and indentation strength method for both ceramics with various grain size. The effect of the grain size on the fracture toughness was evaluated, and the correlation between fracture toughness and mechanical properties such as hardness, Young\`s modulus and flexural strength of these ceramic were also investigated. The highest fracture toughness of around 6.7 MPa.m(sup)1/2 was obtained in Si$_3$N$_4$ ceramics with grain size of 1.58${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. With a larger grain size of $Al_2$O$_3$-30%TiC and Si$_3$N$_4$ ceramics, the fracture toughness was generally increased. The increased fracture toughness of these ceramic also improved the flexural strength although the hardness decreased considerably. Similar results were obtained in grain size and mechanical properties on both $Al_2$O$_3$-30%TiC and Si$_3$N$_4$ ceramic tool materials.

  • Fracture toughness of hot pressed cordierite-SiC whisker ceramic composites contained up to 40vol.% SiC whiskers were determined by using the indentation crack length(IC), indentation strengthin-bending(IS), and single-edge notched-beam(SENB) methods. The results were compared to stress intensity factor, KB, at the crack branching boundary measured by using the mirror zone radius (MZ) method. IS method seems to provide a more reasonable estimation of fracture toughness than other methods for these composites.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to compare the fracture strength of the zirconia ceramic crowns according to tooth position. Material and methods: After 10 metal dies were made for each group, the zirconia ceramic crowns were fabricated using CAD/CAM system ($Lava^{TM}$ All-Ceramic System) and each crown was cemented on each metal die with resin cement (Rely $X^{TM}$ Unicem). The cemented zirconia ceramic crowns mounted on the testing jig were inclined with 30 degrees to the long axis of the tooth and the universal testing machine was used to measure the fracture strength. Results: 1. The fracture strength of the zirconia ceramic crown in the lower 1st molar (2963 N) had the highest and that in the lower central incisor (1035 N) had the lowest. 2. The fracture strength of zirconia ceramic crown was higher than that of the IPS Empress crowns in all tooth position. 3. The fracture mode of the crowns was similar. Most of fracture lines began at the loading area and extended through proximal surface perpendicular to the long axis of the crowns. 4. There were no significant differences on the fracture strength of the zirconia ceramic crowns according to tooth position except in premolar group. Conclusion: Within the limitations of this study, the results suggested that strength of zirconia ceramic crown is satisfactory for clinical use.
