Interfacial shear strength plays an important role in determining the mechanical properties of a fiber-reinforced ceramic composites. In this study, the effect ofinterlayer thickness on mechanical properties of Nicalon-fiber-reinforced SiC composites fabricated via polymer solution infiltration/chemical vapor infiltration (PSI/CVI) was studied. It was found that the flexural strength and fracture toughness of the composites were increased with the interlayer thickness and showed maximum value at the interlayer thickness of 0.66${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$. Typical flexural strength and fracture toughness of Nicalon-fiber-reinforced SiC composites with interlayer thickness of 0.66${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ were 391.7$\pm$34.6MPa and 15.1$\pm$1.8MPa.m1/2, respectively.
The tribological properties of ceramics are very important in the application to engineering ceramic parts such as mechanical seal slurry valve disc and so on. In this study the effect of graphite addition on the mechanical and tribological properties of RBSC/graphite composites were investigated. The composites were prepared by adding graphite powder to the mixture of SiC powder metallic siliconcarbon black and alumina. Bending strength water absorption friction coefficient the amount of worn out material at a certain time and maximum surface roughness(Rmax) of the prepared composites were measured and crystalline phases were examined with XRD. The composite containing 5 vol% graphite powder showed improved bending strength due to high green density and decreased friction coefficient and wear resistance. The friction coefficient and the wear resistance of the composite were increased by adding graphite powder up to 10 vol% They decreased however as increasing the amount of graphite powder more that 10vol% There was no linear relationship between the tribological properties and bending strength of the composites.
Ceramic/metal composites have many attractive properties and great potential fur applications. Interfacial fracture properties of different layered composites are important in material integrity. Therefore, evaluation of fracture toughness at interface is required in essence. In this study, the mechanical characteristics for interface of ceramic/metal composites were investigated by indentation test of micro-hardness method. Apparent interfacial toughness of TBC system could be determined with a relation between the applied load and the length of the crack formed at the interface by indentation test.

We investigated the dielectric and mechanical properties of ceramic polymer composite xBNT - (1-x)LCP (x= 0, 10, 20, 30, 40 vol.%). The disk shaped BNT ($BaNd_2Ti_4O_{12}$) - LCP (liquid crystal polymer) composite samples were prepared by compression molding method. With increasing the BNT content in composites from 10 to 40 vol.%, the dielectric constant increased but the dielectric loss as well as bending strength of composites reduced. These composites were well described with modified Lichtenecker's model having k = 0.392 and 0.303 for the first and second ball milled BNT filled composites, which means that the BNT filler in composites are well dispersed. The dielectric constant of the composite comprised of the second milled BNT ($D_{50}$ = 1.39 um) was higher that of the composite of the first milled BNT ($D_{50}$= 2.45 um), which seems to be related with the different particle size and dispersion of BNT fillers in LCP matrix. The bending strength of the composite containing the second milled BNT was superior to that of the composite of the first milled BNT.
Silicon carbide (SiC) fiber mats generate large amounts of heat through microwave interactions and are used as heating elements in rapid heat treatment furnaces. However, SiC fibers cool immediately when the microwave power is turned off. Therefore, ceramic layers are inserted between the SiC fiber layers to improve the heat conservation performance of SiC fiber mats. In this study, we fabricated SiC fiber mat composites (SMCs) with ceramic layers under various pressures. The SMC fabricated under 0.007 kPa showed the lowest heat-generating temperature and deviation because less necking was observed between the materials. On the other hand, the SMC fabricated under 0.375 kPa showed the highest heat-generating temperature of 1532.33℃. The SMCs prepared in this study using ceramic powder not only showed heat-generating temperatures comparable to those of conventional SiC fiber mats but also exhibited excellent heat-preserving ability.
As a low K material for high frequency high integration modules, glass/ceramic composites were investigated. Glass composition were selected from $SiO_2-B_2O_3-Al_2O_3-R_2O$-RO system which having very low dielectric constant and cordierite was used as a ceramic filler. These composites were sintered at temperature range from $850^{\circ}$ to $950^{\circ}$ and XRD, SEM microstructure analysis of sintered bodies were performed for understanding sintering behavior. Any crystallization was not occurred and dense sintered bodies were attained. Dielectric and mechanical properties of these sintered glass/cordierite composites were analysed by network analyzer and UTM. Glass/ceramic composite with 50 wt% cordierite showing a dielectric constant (${\varepsilon}_r$) of 5.4, Q${\times}f_0$ (Q) of 1600 at 1 GHz and maximum bending strength of 163 MPa was attained.
In the present study, $Si_3N_4-SiC$ ceramic composites that contained up to 20 wt% of dispersed SiC particles were fabricated via hot-pressing with an oxynitride glass. The microstructure, the mechanical properties, and the cutting performance of resulting ceramic composites were investigated. By fixing the composition as $Si_3N_4-20$ wt% SiC, the effect of sintering time on the microstructure, the mechanical properties, and the cutting performance were also investigated. For machining of gray cast i개n, the tool life increases with increasing the amount of SiC content in the composites; The tool life also increased with increasing the sintering time. The tool life of the home-made cutting tools was very close to that of commercial $Si_3N_4$ cutting tool. The superior cutting performance of $Si_3N_4-SiC$ ceramic cutting tools suggests the possibility to be a new ceramic tool material.
BCB $Resin-BaNd_2Ti_4O_{12}$(BNT) composites with BNT contents were prepared by tape casting method and epoxy resin-BNT composites were prepared by using heating press. Their dielectric properties and microstructures were investigated. The dielectric properties such as dielectric constant and dielectric loss at 1 MHz for epoxy resin-BNT composites and BCB resin-BNT composites are improved with an increase of BNT volume fraction. The dielectric constant of the Epoxy-BNT composite increased from 5.9 to 7.8 as the volume fraction of BNT increased from 15 to 25. The dielectric constant of the BCB-BNT composite increased from 9.1 to 15.5 as the volume fraction of BNT increased from 30 to 50. The dielectric behavior of BCB-BNT system can be explained by Lichtenecker's equation. The dielectric constant of epoxy resin-BNT composite is smaller than that of BCB resin-BNT composite. These results are considered to be related with the dispersion of BNT filler in polymer matrix from the result of SEM photograph.
Inorganic-organic composites find extensive application in various fields, including electronic devices and light-emitting diodes. Notably, encapsulation technologies are employed to shield electronic devices (such as printed circuit boards and batteries) from stress and moisture exposure while maintaining electrical insulation. Polymer composites can be used as encapsulation materials because of their controllable mechanical and electrical properties. In this study, we propose a polymer composite that provides good electrical insulation and enhanced mechanical properties. This is achieved by using aluminum borate nanowhiskers (ABOw), which are fabricated using a facile synthesis method. The ABOw fillers are created via a hydrothermal method using aluminum chloride and boric acid. We confirm that the synthesis occurs in various morphologies based on the molar ratio. Specifically, nanowhiskers are synthesized at a molar ratio of 1:3 and used as fillers in the composite. The fabricated ABOw/epoxy composites exhibit a 48.5% enhancement in mechanical properties, similar to those of pure epoxy, while maintaining good electrical insulation.
