  • Climate change is strongly threatening the performance of agricultural reservoirs, which are instrumental in ensuring uninterrupted water supplies for rice cultivation in Korea. In this study, various performance indices were derived and overall sustainability of the 400 agricultural reservoirs was evaluated in the context of climate change trends during 1973-2017. Rice crop evapotranspiration, irrigation water requirements, runoff generation in the upstream watershed, and volumetric evaporation losses were plugged into a water balance model to simulate the reservoir operation during the study period. Resilience, reliability, and vulnerability are the three main indicators of reservoir performance, and these were combined into a single sustainability metric to define the overall system credibility. Historical climate data analysis confirmed that the country is facing a gradual warming shift, particularly in the central and southern agricultural regions. Although annual cumulative rainfall increased over the last 45 years, uneven monthly rainfall distribution during the dry and wet seasons also exacerbated the severity and frequency of droughts/floods. For approximately 85% of the selected reservoirs, the sustainability ranged between 0.35 to 0.77, and this range narrowed sharply with time, particularly for the reservoirs located in the western and southern coast regions. The study outcomes could help in developing the acceptable ranges of the performance indices and implementing appropriate policy and technical interventions for improving the sustainability of reservoirs with unacceptable ranges of the performance indices.

  • The present study was conducted to investigate the single and 2-week repeated dose toxicity of red ginseng acidic polysaccharide (RGAP) in Sprague-Dawley rats. The test article was administered orally to rats at dose levels of 0, and 2000 mg/kg/day for single dose toxicity study and at dose levels of 0, 250, 500, and 1000 mg/kg/day for repeated dose toxicity study. In both studies, there were no treatment-related effects on mortality, clinical signs, food and water consumption, ophthalmoscopy, urinalysis, hematology, serum biochemistry, necropsy findings and organ weights of all animals treated RGAP. Based on these results, it was concluded that the 2-week repeated oral dose of RGAP may have no toxic effect in rats at a dose level of 1000 mg/kg/day. In the condition of this study, the no-observed-adverse-effect level (NOAEL) was considered to be 1000 mg/kg/day for both sexes.

  • In this study, the behavior of water droplet impacting on a thin horizontal wire was visualized by time-delay photography. The impact behavior modes, critical capture speed and trapped mass were analyzed by changing the droplet size, velocity, wire diameter and eccentricity ratio. As the Weber number increased, the hanging, merging, and splitting modes appeared sequentially for the case of central impact, and the hanging and non-splitting modes appeared for the case of off-center impact. The boundary We number of each mode was affected by the diameter ratio. The critical capture speed was affected much by the degree of eccentricity. For all diameter ratios, it was higher for the case of central impact than for off-center impact. The trapped mass was larger for the case of central impact than for off-center impact and it increased with the smaller We number and the larger diameter ratio.

  • The positioning accuracy of the Global Positioning System (GPS) has been improved considerably during the past two decades. The main error sources such as ionospheric refraction, orbital uncertainty, antenna phase center variation, signal multipath, and tropospheric delay have been reduced substantially, if not eliminated. In this study, the GPS data collected by the GPS receivers that were established as continuously operating reference stations by International GNSS Service (IGS), Ministry of the Interior (MOl), Central Weather Bureau (CWB), and Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) Of Taiwan are utilized to investigate the impact of atmospheric water vapor on GPS positioning determination. The surface meteorological measurements that were concurrently acquired by instruments co-located with the GPS receivers include temperature, pressure and humidity data. To obtain the influence of the GPS height on the proposed impact study. A hydrodynamic ocean tide model (GOTOO.2 model) and solid earth tide were used to improve the GPS height. The surface meteorological data (pressure, temperature and humidity) were introduced to the data processing with 24 troposphere parameters. The results from the studies associated with different GPS height were compared for the cases with and without a priori knowledge of surface meteorological measurements. The finding based on the measurements in 2003 is that the surface meteorological measurements have an impact on the GPS height. The associated daily maximum of the differences is 1.07 cm for the KDNM station. The impact is reduced due to smoothing when the average of the GPS height for the whole year is considered.

  • Background: The carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is the most common cause of severe hand pain. In this study we treated acute pain in CTS patients by means of local intradermal injections of anti-inflammatory drugs (mesotherapy). Methods: In twenty-five patients (forty-five hands), CTS diagnosis was confirmed by clinical and neurophysiological examination prior to mesotherapy. A mixture containing lidocaine 10 mg, ketoprophen lysine-acetylsalycilate 80 mg, xantinol nicotinate 100 mg, cyanocobalamine 1,000 mcg plus injectable water was used. Sites of injection were three parallel lines above the transverse carpal ligament and two v-shaped lines, one at the base of the thenar eminence, and the other at the base of the hypothenar eminence. Results: The day after the treatment, all but four patients reported a significant reduction in pain and paresthesias. After 12 months, 17 patients had a complete pain relief, eight patients reported recurrence of pain and sensory symptoms and four out of them underwent surgical treatment. Conclusions: With the obvious limits of a small-size open-label study, our results suggest that mesotherapy can temporary relieve pain and paresthesias in most CTS patients and in some cases its effect seems to be long-lasting. Further controlled studies are needed to confirm our preliminary findings and to compare mesotherapy to conventional approaches for the treatment of CTS.

  • Fresh (raw roots), white (dried), and red (steamed-drid) ginseng samples were gamma-irradiated at 0 to 7 kGy. Electron spin resonance (ESR) technique was used to characterize the irradiation status of the samples, targeting the radiation-induced cellulose radicals after different sample pretreatments. All non-irradiated samples exhibited a single central signal (g=2.006), whose intensity showed significant increase upon irradiation. The ESR spectra from the radiation-induced cellulose radicals, with two side peaks (g=2.0201 and g=1.9851) equally spaced (${\pm}3mT$) from the central signal, were also observed in the irradiated samples. The core sample analyzed after alcoholic-extraction produced the best results for irradiated fresh ginseng samples. In the case of irradiated white and red ginseng samples, the central (natural) and radiation-induced (two-side peaks corresponding to cellulose radical) signal intensities showed little improvement on alcoholic-extraction. The water-washing step minimized the effect of $Mn^{2+}$, but reduced the intensity of side peaks making them difficult to indentify. The effect of different origins was negligible, however harvesting year showed a clear effect on radiation-induced ESR signals.

  • Our goal is to obtain a better scientific understanding how to define the nature and role of remotely sensed land surface parameters and energy fluxes in the heat island phenomena, and local and regional weather and climate. By using the MODIS visible and thermal imagery data and analyzing the surface energy flux images associated with the change of the landcover and landuse in study area, we will estimate and present how significant is the magnitude of the heat island heat effect and its relation with the surface parameters and the energy fluxes in Taiwan. To achieve our objective, we used the energy budget components such as net radiation, soil heat flux, sensible heat flux, and latent heat flux in the study area of interest derived form remotely sensed data to understand the island heat effect. The result shows that the water is the most important component to decrease the temperature, and the more the consumed net radiation to latent heat, the lower urban surface temperature.

  • Two hundred and forty post-larvae (PL) of fresh water prawn, Macrobrachium rosenbergii were distributed in eight treatment groups with three replicates each. Eight experimental diets were prepared by using squilla (Orato squilla nepa), squid (Sepia pharonis) and clam (katelysia opima) alone or in different combination as source of animal protein and compared to a control diet containing fish meal. Total crude protein content for all dietary treatments was around 32%. Total protein content of fish meal was replaced by an equal amount of protein from different animal protein sources on isonitrogenous basis. Diets were fed at 5% of the body weight of post-larvae twice daily. The experiment was conducted for a period of 60 days. It was found that all the above three protein sources could be used by completely replacing fishmeal except clam meal at higher level of inclusion (26%). A combination of squid and squilla meal at 14% each in the diet increased the growth performance of PL significantly (p<0.05) in terms of Specific growth rate (SGR) % (5.17), FCR (2.12) and PER (1.51). Squilla meal can be used to the maximum level of 38% without any growth depression.

  • Central diabetes insipidus(CDI) results from deficient vasopressin(antidiuretic hormone) secretion and causes polydipsia and polyuria. Its etiologic diagnosis is confirmed with an increase of urine osmolality by administering desmopressin(DDAVP) after water restriction. Because cm is caused by deficiency of vasopressin, up to now, desmopressin, a synthetic analog of vasopressin, has been the drug of choice in the treatment of CDI. However, under such treatment, CDI patients suffer from the continual administration of DDAVP throughout one's life and high cost of the treatment We administrated oriental herb medicine on a cm patient in a state of discontinuance of DDAVP. Prior to the study, brain sella MRI was scanned to exclude germinoma. In addition, urine analysis, serum and urinary osmolality, daily urinary volume, serum electrolyte levels were measured. Chungsimyunjatang was administered for 15 days, and urine analysis, urine osmolality, daily urinary volume, serum Na were measured several times again during the therapy, As a result, urinary frequency increased, serum Na slightly elevated, but specific gravity of urine, urinary osmolality severely decreased and daily urinary volume substantially increased. However, the frequency of DDAVP treatment was reduced from four times per day to once or twice a day with the continual administration of the Chungsimyunja-tang for two months after the discharge.
