  • Analysis of the GRSW-A model coupled into the FALCON code is extended by simulation of central void formation in fuel pellets due to high-temperature fuel restructuring. The extended calculation is verified against published, well-known experimental data. Good agreement with the data for a central void diameter in pellets of the rod irradiated in an Experimental Breeder Reactor is shown. The new calculation methodology is employed in comparative analysis of modern BWR fuel behavior under assumed high-power operation. The initial fuel porosity is shown to have a major effect on the predicted central void diameter during the operation in question. Discernible effects of a central void on peak fuel temperature and Pellet-Cladding Mechanical Interaction (PCMI) during a simulated power ramp are shown. A mitigating effect on PCMI is largely attributed to the additional free volume in the pellets into which the fuel can creep due to internal compressive stresses during a power ramp.

  • We carry out the first survey for globular clusters (GCs) of three galaxies in cosmic voids using Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Advanced Camera for Survey archival F606W and F814W images. While all sample galaxies are classified as early-type galaxies based on ground-based imaging, the high resolution HST images reveal that they are actually spiral galaxies. We identify the point sources with red colors typical for GCs as GC candidates in the color-magnitude diagrams. As a result, we find a significant number of GC candidates. The spatial and radial distribution of GCs show central concentration on each galaxy region. Their mean colors are similar to that of the Milky Way and M31 GCs. The void GCs are somewhat bluer by, and than cluster and field GCs in early-type galaxies with similar luminosity to our samples, but the discrepancy is not significant. We also estimate the specific frequencies of GCs in these galaxies and the values are consistent with those in field and cluster galaxies with similar luminosity. From these results, we suggest that the formation process of void GCs is similar to that of GCs in other environments. The further implications will be discussed.

  • Since Plath killed herself in 1963, the theme of death has become one of the central motifs and allusions in her work. The biographical emphasis continues to blur the boundary between the artistic world and the material world. While approaching Plath's work from the perspective of personal experience, the objective of this paper is not to suggest that we encounter Plath's personal voice and emotions directly in her work. Rather, I emphasize how Plath's work of mourning is substantiated in the act of writing. Plath protects herself from the unnamable or the existential void by writing poems. She shows the way in which art or writing enables the subject to confront traumatic memory. While the death drive propels Plath towards destruction, artistic formation serves to alleviate her psychic crisis. What I shall suggest in the paper is how works of art lead the melancholic subject to challenge traumatic events. Plath herself suggests the therapeutic power of language. Plath's hostility toward women as well as men situates her work nearer to the Kristevan psychoanalytic theory which examines depressive anxieties intrinsically linked to the loss of maternal objects. Kristeva's particular focus on the concept of "death-bearing mother" or the unnamable offers a fruitful reading of the representation of infantile fantasies, sexuality, anger, and ambivalence toward lost loved object which clearly dominates most of Plath's poems. Kristeva elaborates mourning and melancholia through the framework of signification and it is of especial relevance in deciphering the recurring death drive and melancholic rage in Plath's work. Melancholic subjects in Plath's work are characterized by an amorphous state, occupying a borderline state regulated by the death drive.
