  • Purpose: A noncentral composite design method is to be developed to explore farther region for the first factorial design. A general guideline for sequential experimentation is provided. Methods: (1) A non-overlapping noncentral composite design (NNCD) is developed, in which the second factorial design shares one design point that indicates the best response value in the first factorial design. (2) Four composite designs are compared in terms of the four design evaluation criteria, which are D-, A, G, and I-optimality. (3) A follow-up design strategy is suggested based on the interaction effect, direction of improvement, number of factors. Results: (1) NNCD and model building method are presented, which is useful for exploring farther region from first factorial design block. (2) The performances of the four composite designs are compared. (3) A follow-up design strategy is suggested. Conclusion: (1) NNCD will be useful to explore farther region for the first factorial design. (2) A follow-up design strategy can be beneficial to the experimental practitioners for product and process design and improvement.

  • This study proposes the generation mechanism of various design matrix using generalized linear model for design of experiment. Design generation method of GLM analysis, factorial design(FD) with center points, ANOVA design with lack-of-fit test, and response surface design are introduced. In central composite(CC) design, orthogonal blocking and fractional factorial design(FFD) are presented. We compare the design of Box-Benhken(BB) and face-centred central compsite design.

  • The central composite design is widely used for estimating second order response surfaces. This type of design is composed of $2^k$ factorial points, axial points and center points. In this paper, we suggest a version of central composite design where the positions of the axial points are indicated by two numbers, and study properties of this design. We obtain the variances and covariances of the estimators of the regression coefficients. Conditions are obtained for this design to be orthogonal and rotatable. This design is compared with other designs on the basis of efficiency.

  • This work was carried out to investigate the welding behavior of thin A3003 Al alloy sheets by Nd : YAG laser beam. Considering bead shape and mechanical properties, the laser pulse shapes selected were two kinds of 2-division and 3-division by varying power level and pulse duration. In order to obtain optimum conditions, the factorial design method and central composite design method were applied. Tensile test, optical microscopy, micro hardness test and TEM analysis were performed. Due to the annealing caused by thermal effect during laser welding, precipitates were coarsended. The HAZ was softened and failed during tensile test. The hardness of HAZ was lower than that of base metal, since the heat input relieved the work hardening effect and caused grain growth.

  • Statistical experimental designs; involving (i) a fractional factorial design (FFD) and (ii) a central composite design (CCD) were applied to optimize the culture medium constituents for production of a unique antifreeze protein by the Antartic micro algae Chaetoceros neogracile. The results of the FFD suggested that NaCl, KCl, $MgCl_2$, and ${Na}_{2}{SiO}_{3}$ were significant variables that highly influenced the growth rate and biomass production. The optimum culture medium for the production of an antifreeze protein from C. neogracile was found to be Kalle's artificial seawater, pH of $7.0{\pm}0.5$, consisting of 28.566 g/l of NaCl, 3.887 g/l of $MgCl_2$, 1.787 g/l of $MgSO_4$, 1.308 g/l of $CaSO_4$, 0.832 g/l of ${K_2}{SO_4}$, 0.124 g/l of $CaCO_3$, 0.103 g/l of KBr, 0.0288 g/l of $SrSO_4$, and 0.0282 g/l of ${H_3}{BO_3}$. The antifreeze activity significantly increased after cells were treated with cold shock (at $-5^{\circ}C$) for 14 h. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report demonstrating an antifreeze-like protein of C. neogracile.

  • This work investigated the methodology to simultaneously optimize the ozone and relative humidity composition for the $NO_x$ degradation using soil biofilter. Experiments were made as a function of inlet ozone concentration ($0{\sim}1,770\;ppb$) and relative humidity ($38{\sim}81%$). Factorial design ($2^2+3$) and response surface methodology by central composite designs were used to examine the role of two factors and optimal response condition on $NO_x$ degradation. It was found that a second-order response surface model can properly interpret the experimental data with an $R^2$-value of 0.9730 and F-value of 71.83, based on which the maximum $NO_x$ degradation was predicted up to 92.8% within our experimental conditions.

  • Near Infrared transmittance Spectroscopy (NIRS) was used to evaluate and quantify the pharmaceutical active compounds. In the paper, taurine (2-Aminoethanesulfonic acid) was quantitatively analyzed in commercial pharmaceutical preparations. For calibration a central composite factorial design was used to determine concentrations of ingredients in reference samples. For the quantitative analysis of taurine, the most suitable data analysis method includes the calculation of second derivatives and a partial least squares regression (PLSR) model. By NIR spectrometry, combined with PLSR, the taurine concentration was successfully predicted with a relative standard error of prediction (SEP) lower than 1.04%.

  • A review about the application of response surface methodology in the optimization of food technology is presented. The theoretical principles of response surface methodology and steps for its application are described. The response surface methodologies : three-level full factorial, central composite, Box-Behnken, and Doehlert designs are compared in terms of characteristics and efficiency. Furthermore, recent references of their uses in food technology are presented. A comparison between the response surface designs (three-level full factorial, central composite, Box-Behnken and Doehlert design) has demonstrated that the Box-Behnken and Doehlert designs are slightly more efficient than the central composite design but much more efficient than the three-level full factorial designs.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to design a systematic method to estimate optimal operation conditions of design variables for an electronic device alignment system. Method: The 2-level factorial design and the central composite design are used in order to plan experiments. Based on the experiment results, a regression model is established to find optimal conditions for the design variables. Results: 3 of 5 design variables are selected as major factors that affect the alignment system significantly. The optimized condition for each variable is estimated by using a sequential experiment plan and a quadratic regression model. Conclusion: The method designed in this study provides an efficient and systematic plan to select the optimized operation condition for the design variables. The method is expected to improve inspection accuracy of the system and reduce the development cost and period.
