A new approach in solving design centering problem is presented. Like most stochastic optimization problems, optimal design centering problems have intrinsic difficulties in multivariate intergration of probability density functions. In order to avoid to avoid those difficulties, genetic algorithm and very coarse Monte Carlo simulation are used in this research. The new algorithm performs robustly while producing improved yields. This result implies that the combination of robust optimization methods and approximated simulation schemes would give promising ways for many stochastic optimizations which are inappropriate for mathematical programming.

An automatic sample centering system is underway at the protein crystallography beam line of the Pohang Light Source to improve the efficiency of the crystal screening process. A sample pin which contains a protein crystal is mounted on a goniometer head. Then the crystal should be moved to the center of X-ray beam by controlling the motorized goniometer to obtain diffraction data. Since the X-ray beam is located at the center of the image obtained from the CCD camera when the image of the sample pin is in focus, an auto-focusing algorithm is a very important part in the auto-sample-centering system. However the results of applying several well-known auto focusing algorithms directly to the images are not satisfactory owing to the following factors: misalignment of CCD camera, non-uniform cryo-stream in the background of the image and the supporter of the loop. The performance of an auto-focusing algorithm can be increased if the algorithm is applied to only the loop region identified. Non-uniform cryo-stream and a various illumination condition and a stain, which is shown in the image, are main obstacles to loop region identification. In this paper, a simple loop region identification algorithm, which can solve these problems, is proposed and the effective ness of the proposed scheme is shown by applying the auto-focusing algorithm to the loop region identified.

The purpose of this research was developing an integrated way to solve two typical tolerance optimization problem i.e. optimal tolerance allotment and design centering. A new problem definition design centering-tolerance allotment problem (DCTA) was proposed here for the first time and solved. Genetic algorithm and coarse Monte Carlo simulation were used to solve the stochastic optimization problem. Optimal costs were compared with the costs from the previous optimization strategies Significant cost reductions were achieved by DCTA scheme.
A modified mechanical model of pre-pressed spring self-centering energy dissipation (PS-SCED) brace is proposed, and the hysteresis band is distinguished by the indication of relevant state variables. The MDOF frame system equipped with the braces is formulated in an incremental form of linear acceleration method. A multi-objective genetic algorithm (GA) based brace parameter optimization method is developed to obtain an optimal solution from the primary design scheme. Parameter sensitivities derived by the direct differentiation method are used to modify the change rate of parameters in the GA operator. A case study is conducted on a steel braced frame to illustrate the effect of brace parameters on node displacements, and validate the feasibility of the modified mechanical model. The optimization results and computational process information are compared among three cases of different strategies of parameter change as well. The accuracy is also verified by the calculation results of finite element model. This work can help the applications of PS-SCED brace optimization related to parameter sensitivity, and fulfill the systematic design procedure of PS-SCED brace-structure system with completed and prospective consequences.
In this study, a new recentering friction device (RFD) to retrofit steel moment frame structures is introduced. The device provides both self-centering and energy dissipation capabilities for the retrofitted structure. A hybrid performance-based seismic design procedure considering multiple limit states is proposed for designing the device and the retrofitted structure. The design of the RFD is achieved by modifying the conventional performance-based seismic design (PBSD) procedure using computational intelligence techniques, namely, genetic algorithm (GA) and artificial neural network (ANN). Numerous nonlinear time-history response analyses (NLTHAs) are conducted on multi-degree of freedom (MDOF) and single-degree of freedom (SDOF) systems to train and validate the ANN to achieve high prediction accuracy. The proposed procedure and the new RFD are assessed using 2D and 3D models globally and locally. Globally, the effectiveness of the proposed device is assessed by conducting NLTHAs to check the maximum inter-story drift ratio (MIDR). Seismic fragilities of the retrofitted models are investigated by constructing fragility curves of the models for different limit states. After that, seismic life cycle cost (LCC) is estimated for the models with and without the retrofit. Locally, the stress concentration at the contact point of the RFD and the existing steel frame is checked being within acceptable limits using finite element modeling (FEM). The RFD showed its effectiveness in minimizing MIDR and eliminating residual drift for low to mid-rise steel frames models tested. GA and ANN proved to be crucial integrated parts in the modified PBSD to achieve the required seismic performance at different limit states with reasonable computational cost. ANN showed a very high prediction accuracy for transformation between MDOF and SDOF systems. Also, the proposed retrofit showed its efficiency in enhancing the seismic fragility and reducing the LCC significantly compared to the un-retrofitted models.
The purpose of this study is to develop a program that computes the position of the instantaneous center of rotation while an object moves in a circular motion. For this study, a mathematical algorithm was developed and implemented on the experimental data. Data for pitching (40m carry) and putting (4m) strokes were obtained from a skilled female golfer. A computer program (Centering 1.0) calculated the experimental data and found the radius of the instantaneous center of rotation. When the data were taken broadly, the program produced an error distance of radius. When the data were divided gradually, the program produced a very close instantaneous center of rotation. On comparing pitching and putting strokes, putting was found to have a greater radius than pitching. The instantaneous centers of rotation of putting were not in the golfer's body rather, they were 3m away from the club head. The Centering 1.0 program can calculate the instantaneous center of rotation with at least three sets of experimental data.
The evaluation structure of complex problems is composed of multi-attributes and hierarchy. A many studies were existed on this problems, but that based on the assumption that the evaluation elements were independent. The actual evaluation problems have the complexity, ambiguity and interlinkage among the elements. In this situation, the fuzzy evaluation process is very effective in settling the complex problems. For evaluation of large scale hierarchical MADM problem, the fuzzy evaluation algorithm is developed in this paper, and that is centering on the identification of fuzzy measures. In this study, we newly identified the weight and interaction among the evaluation attributes. The results of this study are as follows: we can identified the hierarchical structure of the evaluation problem which is composed of the evaluation structure, function and hierarchy; we improved the existed weighting method which could be accomplished by normalizing process, considering the uncertainty and new weight integrating method which come from Dempster-Shafer theory. And we take into account the interaction properties among more than 3 evaluation attributes, which can be compared with the existed studies in which only 2 evaluation attributes taked into account.

This paper considers about the tilt measurement of lens module with multiple lenses. The tilt between lenses in lens module and barrel or between image sensor and barrel can be measured precisely with the proposed algorithm. The magnitude and direction of the tilt vector of lens and image sensor can be measured from the best focal surface. The selecting and setting of image sensor, test chart, image sensor centering to lens module, axis align, focus measure method are also explained to get highly precise tilt results. The proposed algorithm is verified with the lens module inspection system we developed, and the experimental results show that the tilt measure proposed in this paper is robust and precise. With the proposed tilt measurement algorithm, the tilt of an image sensor and any other lens which intermediates light can be measured.

The digital sun sensor calculates the incident sunlight angle using the sunlight image registered on a CMOS image sensor. In order to accomplish this, an exact center of the sunlight image has to be determined. Therefore, an accurate estimate of the centroid is the most important factor in digital sun sensor development. The most general method for determining the centroid is the thresholding method, and this method is also the simplest and easy to implement. Another centering algorithm often used is the image filtering method that utilizes image processing. The sun sensor accuracy using these methods, however, is quite susceptible to noise in the detected sunlight intensity. This is especially true in the thresholding method where the accuracy changes according to the threshold level. In this paper, a template method that uses the sunlight image model to determine the centroid of the sunlight image is suggested, and the performance has been compared and analyzed. The template method suggested, unlike the thresholding and image filtering method, has comparatively higher accuracy. In addition, it has the advantage of having consistent level of accuracy regardless of the noise level, which results in a higher reliability.

In this paper, we propose a destination optimal route algorithm for providing route finding service for the transportation handicapped by using the multi-criteria decision-making technique and the modified A-STAR optimal route search algorithm. This is a method to set the route to the destination centering on safety by replacing the distance cost of the existing A-STAR optimal route search algorithm with the safety cost calculated through AHP/TOPSIS analysis. To this end, 10 factors such as road damage, curb, and road hole were first classified as poor road factors that hinder road driving, and then pairwise comparison of AHP was analyzed and then defined as the weight of TOPSIS. Afterwards, the degree of driving safety was quantified for a certain road section in Busan through TOPSIS analysis, and the development of an optimal route search algorithm for the transportation handicapped that replaces the distance cost with safety in the finally modified A-STAR optimal route algorithm was completed.
