  • Process input data including material and energy, process output data including product, co-product and its environmental emissions of the reference and target processes were collected and analyzed to evaluate the process performance. Environmentally problematic input/environmental emissions of the manufacturing processes were identified using these data. Significant process inputs contributing to each of the environmental emissions were identified using multiple regression analysis between the process inputs and environmental emissions. Optimum combination of the end-of-pipe technologies for treating the environmental emissions considering economic aspects was made using the linear programming technique. The cement manufacturing processes in Korea and the EU producing same type of cement were chosen for the case study. Environmentally problematic input/environmental emissions of the domestic cement manufacturing processes include coal, dust, and $SO_x$. Multiple regression analysis among the process inputs and environmental emissions revealed that $CO_2$ emission was influenced most by coal, followed by the input raw materials and gypsum. $SO_x$ emission was influenced by coal, and dust emission by gypsum followed by raw material. Optimization of the end-of-pipe technologies treating dust showed that a combination of 100% of the electro precipitator and 2.4% of the fiber filter gives the lowest cost. The $SO_x$ case showed that a combination of 100% of the dry addition process and 25.88% of the wet scrubber gives the lowest cost. Salient feature of this research is that it proposed a method for identifying environmentally problematic input/environmental emissions of the manufacturing processes, in particular, cement manufacturing process. Another feature is that it showed a method for selecting the optimum combination of the end-of-pipe treatment technologies.

  • The results of an experimental study on the manufacture and the mechanical properties of carbon fiber rekforced silica fume . cement composites and light weight fly ash . cement composites are presented in this paper. 11s the test results show, the flexural strength, fracture toughness and ductility of CF reinforced silica fume . cement composites were remarkably increased by the increase of carbon fiber contents. And the workability of the fly ash . cement composites were improved, but the compressive and flexural strength and bulk specific gravity of them are decreased by increasing the ratio of fly ash to cement. And the compressive and flexural strength of the fly ash cement composites by cured under the hot water were improved than those by mositure cured. Also, the manufacturing process technology of lightweight fly ash . cement composites in replacement of general autoclaved lightweight concrete was developed and its optimum mix proportions were proposed.

  • PURPOSE. The aim of this study was to compare the passivity of implant superstructures by assessing the strain development around the internal tapered connection implants with strain gauges. MATERIALS AND METHODS. A polyurethane resin block in which two implants were embedded served as a measurement model. Two groups of implant restorations utilized cement-retained design and internal surface of the first group was adjusted until premature contact between the restoration and the abutment completely disappeared. In the second group, only nodules detectable to the naked eye were removed. The third group employed screw-retained design and specimens were generated by computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing system (n=10). Four strain gauges were fixed on the measurement model mesially and distally to the implants. The strains developed in each strain gauge were recorded during fixation of specimens. To compare the difference among groups, repeated measures 2-factor analysis was performed at a level of significance of ${\alpha}$=.05. RESULTS. The absolute strain values were measured to analyze the magnitude of strain. The mean absolute strain value ranged from 29.53 to 412.94 ${\mu}m/m$ at the different strain gauge locations. According to the result of overall comparison, the cement-retained prosthesis groups exhibited significant difference. No significant difference was detected between milled screw-retained prostheses group and cement-retained prosthesis groups. CONCLUSION. Within the limitations of the study, it was concluded that the cement-retained designs do not always exhibit lower levels of stress than screw-retained designs. The internal adjustment of a cement-retained implant restoration is essential to achieve passive fit.

  • In this study, cement clinkers were sintered at each temperature by replacing some of the clay components of cement clinkers with coal materials. The mineral phase change of sintered cement clinker was quantitatively analyzed by XRD-Rietveld method. As the sintering temperature of cement clinker increased, the amount of belite decreased, the amount of alite increased, and the amount of free-CaO decreased. The form of alite and belite could be distinguished at sintering temperature of 1450℃ or higher. The crystal size was greatly increased at 1500℃ sintering. It was confirmed that the excessive sintering was progressed. Free-CaO decreased with the increase of sintering temperature. At 1450 ℃ or higher, it was less than 0.5%. In 1450℃ or greater, it is determined that enough sintering is included. Therefore, the application of fly ash as a raw material of cement clinker was judged to be usable as a source of chemical components of alumina and iron raw materials.

  • Coal ash is being considered as a source of silica and alumina for cement clinker. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect on cement clinker sintering by confirming the high-temperature microstructural change according to the firing temperature in the cement clinker sintering process of coal ash. In the coal ash used as a raw material for cement clinker, the shape change of the particle surface was confirmed from the sintering tem perature of 950 ℃. The shape of the coal ash disappeared from the sintering temperature higher than 1250 ℃. It was confirmed that the Al and Fe components of the coal ash were converted to the cement interstitial phase at a temperature higher than 1350 ℃. In addition, the clinker using a large amount of coal ash as a raw material showed a low content of Lime and a high content of Belite in the sintering tem perature range of 1150~1200 ℃. From this, it was confirmed that the formation of calcium silicate mineral proceeds more easily at the initial sintering temperature by the application of coal ash.

  • The objective of this study is to find the strength properties of concrete using blast furnace slag. Its mechanical strength properties investigated include compressive strength, flexural strength, and tensile strength. The main expeirmental variables were cement type, coarse aggregate size(19, 25mm), and water/cement ratio(28, 32, 36%). The principal results obtained from this study are as follows ; it was possible to obtain the compressive strength of $500{\sim}700kg/cm^2$ concrete by using the blast furnace slag. Therefore, blast furnace slag was proved to be superior to ordinary portland cement in manufacturing the high strength concrete with the same mix conditions. In the near furture, concrete using blast furnace slag is expected to be practically used in the field.

  • The properties of mortar and concrete including metakaolin as a partial cement replacement were investigated in terms of fluidity and compressive strength. The results show that mortar and concrete in which 10 % of cement is replaced with metakaolin exhibit much higher compressive strength after 3 days of hydration than ordinary Portland cement, indicating that metakaolin can be used in the production of high strength concrete replacing silica fume. The type of superplasticizer largely affected on the fluidity and compressive strength of mortar and concrete including metakaolin. It was concluded that when metakaolin is used for the purpose of manufacturing high strength concrete, it is desirable to use PNS based blends rather than PNS, PMS and polycarboxylate based superplasticizer.
