  • Most cellulose resources come from the higher plants, but bacteria also synthesize same cellulose as in plants. Many scientists have been widely studied on the bacterial cellulose, the process development, manufacturing, even marketing of cellulose fibers. The bacterial celluloses are very different in its physical and morphological structures. These fibers have many unique properties that are potentially and commercially beneficial. The fine fibers can produce a smooth paper with enchanced its strength property. But there gave been few reports on the mechanical properties of the processing of bacterial cellulose into structural materials. This study were performed to elucidate the mechanical properties of sheets prepared from bacterial cellulose. Also reinforcing effect of bacterial cellulose on the conventional pulp paper as well as surface structures by scanning electron microscopy were discussed. Paper made from bacterial cellulose is 10 times much stronger than ordinary chemical pulp sheet, and the mixing of bacterial cellulose has a remarkable reinforcing effect on the papers. Mechanical strengthes were increased with the increase of bacterial cellulose content in the sheet. This strength increase corresponds to the increasing water retention value and sheet density with the increase of bacterial cellulose content. Scanning electron micrographs were shown that fine microfibrills of bacterial celluloses covered on the surfaces of hardwood pulp fibers, and enhanced sheet strength by its intimate fiber bonding.

  • Manufacturing fabrics from dissolving cellulosic pulp is increasing in these days. For making high quality of cellulose-based fabrics, control of cellulose DP (degree of polymerization), its alpha cellulose content, its brightness, and its crystallinity are important. To process the cellulosic raw material, refining of cellulosic fibers is essential, and it is important to know if refining affects those important cellulose properties. The effects of PFI mill and Valley beater refining on the alpha-cellulose content, cellulose DP, crystallinity, and paper mechanical properties of wood and two different cotton fibers were studied. The results showed that PFI mill refining rarely affected those properties. Fibers refined by a Valley beater displayed a small reduction in fiber length in comparison with those refined by a PFI mill. However, the Valley beater refining method produced almost no changes in cellulose properties, either. The refining process seemed to have very little effect on the cellulose DP, crystallinity index, or alpha-cellulose content until the freeness decreased to around 300 mL CSF for wood and 100 mL CSF for cotton fibers, respectively. There were also no differences in tensile strength development in two refining methods.

  • The use of cellulose papers has recently attracted much attention in various device applications owing to their natural advantageous properties of earth's abundance, bio-friendly, large-scale production, and flexibility. Conventional metal oxides with novel structures of nanorods, nanospindles, nanowires and nanobelts are being developed for emerging electronic and chemical sensing applications. In this work, both ZnO (n-type) nanorod arrays (NRAs) and CuO (p-type) nanospindles (NSs) were synthesized on cellulose papers and the p-n junction property was investigated using the electrode of indium tin oxide coated polyethylene terephthalate film. To synthesize ZnO and CuO nanostructures on cellulose paper, a simple and facile hydrothermal method was utilized. First, the CuO NSs were synthesized on cellulose paper by a simple soaking process, yielding the well adhered CuO NSs on cellulose paper. After that, the ZnO NRAs were grown on CuO NSs/cellulose paper via a facile hydrothermal route. The as-grown ZnO/CuO NSs on cellulose paper exhibited good crystalline and optical properties. The fabricated p-n junction device showed the I-V characteristics with a rectifying behaviour.

  • Simple methods of conductometric titration and infrared spectroscopy were used to quantify the surface carboxyl content of cellulose fibrils isolated by 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl radical (TEMPO)-mediated oxidation. The effects of different cellulose sources, post or assisted-sonication oxidation treatment, and the amount of sodium hypochlorite addition on the carboxyl content of cellulose were reported. This study showed that post sonication treatment had no influence on the improvement of surface carboxyl charge of cellulose macrofibrils (CMFs). However, the carboxyl content increased for the isolated cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs). Thus the carboxyl content of CNFs is different from those of their corresponding bulk oxidized cellulose and CMFs. Filter paper as a CNF source imparted a higher surface charge than did hardwood bleached kraft pulp (HWBKP) and microcrystalline cellulose (MCC). It was considered that the crystallinity and microstructure of the initial cellulose affected oxidation efficiency. In addition, the carboxyl content of cellulose was successfully controlled by applying sonication treatment during the oxidation reaction and adjusting the amount of sodium hypochlorite.

  • Different types of antioxidants compounds were prepared economically from natural sources. Application of these compounds towards photo stabilization of high yield bagasse pulp has been investigated. It was found that potato peel antioxidant followed by clove volatile oil provides lower brightness reversion and better photo stabilization effect for paper made from high yield bagasse pulp after exposure to UV lights in comparison with butyl hydroxy anisol or chamomile volatile oil.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effects of optical brightening agents (OBA) on the chemical degradation characteristics of paper cellulose during humid heating aging. Three different types of OBAs were applied to a filter paper by dipping it in OBA solutions whose concentrations were controlled to 1% and 2%. The filter papers with an OBA were artificially aged at $80^{\circ}C$ and 65% RH, and the changes in pH of paper and viscosity of cellulose were evaluated. Their functional groups were also analyzed by ATR-FTIR (at-tenuated total reflectance fourier transform infrared spectroscopy). It was found that OBAs influenced the chemical degradation of paper cellulose during humid heating aging. Higher concentration of OBA solutions accelerated the degradation of paper cellulose. Especially, after aging for 12 days, the paper cellulose treated with the tetra-type OBA were the most significantly aged among the three types of OBAs. It was assumed that pH of OBA solutions affected the aging characteristics.

  • This study focused on investigating the effect of aligned cellulose fibers to the performance of EAPap actuator. The performance of EAPap is dependant on the material direction of cellulose film. Electrospinning was used to improve material directionality of EAPap. DMAc cellulose solution which cotton pulp was resolved in DMAc solvent was used for electrospinning cellulose film. To increase directionality of nano fibers, the Electrospun film was stretched by 10 % strain during drying process. Induced in-plane strain of Electrospun EAPap was proportional to the applied voltage and larger than that of spincast EAPap. It is concluded that the performance of EAPap was improved by aligning cellulose fibers.

  • Cellulose based electro-active paper(EAPap) is considered as a new smart material which has a potential to be used for biomimetic actuators and sensors. Beside of the natural abundance, cellulose EAPap is fascinating with its biodegradability, lightweight, high mechanical strength and low actuation voltage. When the external stress is applied to EAPap, it can generate the electrical output due to its piezoelectric property. Using piezoelectric behavior of EAPap, we studied the feasibility of EAPap as mechanical strain sensor applications and compared to commercial strain sensor. By measuring the induced output voltage from the thin piezoelectric cellulose EAPap under static and dynamic force, we propose cellulose EAPap film as a potential strain sensor material.

  • The bacterial cellulose has many unique properties that are potentially and commercially beneficial. In order to make opaque product from this cellulose, filling properties by fillers should be known. This study was performed to investigate the effect of filler addition on physical properties of sheets from bacterial cellulose. The effect of filling on its optical properties was also discussed. The apparent density and internal bonding strength of bacterial cellulose sheet are decreasing with the increase of filler contents. Those adversely affect Young's modulus and physical property of the sheet, but these negative phenomena of the bacterial cellulose sheet by filler addition are not so sensitive compared to substantial decreasing of physical properties of ordinary hardwood KP. This strength decrease would be attributed to the decrease of relative bonding sites among pulp fibers. Concerned to optical properties, the bacterial cellulose sheet shows high increase of brightness and opacity according to filler loading, but no significant changes in porosity up to 17.3% loading because of fine and filamentous structure of bacterial cellulose fibers.
